Please change the way bookmarks function

I would like the bookmarks to open in the bible pane that I have active rather than in the one where links are sent.

I have two Bible panes, one for my active study and one for hyperlinks. That way a verse link in a resource will not change my primary Bible window and make me loose my place.

I want to use bookmarks to shift the focus of my study since there isn't any other mechanism in Logos other than changing layouts to simply shift the focus of Bible study.

I understand the rationale for your request but can't help wonder how many people would be adversely affected since they have developed workflows based on the current behavior.

The only way I have found requires extra steps. You must open the bookmarks pane, Then drag the desired bookmark to the pane you choose. Archaic, but it works.

Your right of course. However I find it quite a serious oversight that Logos doesn't allow the user to shift the focus of Bible study. They seem to assume two things: 1) that you only have one focus of Bible study and/or 2) that if you use multiple layouts to change focus (like from studying John to studying Genesis) that the layout has only minor differences. For example I have an "exegetical layout" that has multiple panes with multiple tabs set up the way I want to do that kind of study. I can clone it for different studies, John, Luke, Revelation etc. and add a few special resources to that layout, like adding Four Views of Revelation to that layout. However if I decide to change my fundamental "exegetical" setup, I would have to go to all these layouts and change them too.

I'm studying several parts of John and would like to shift between say chapter 5 and chapter 20. Seems like Bookmarks are the ideal, but using them requires several steps. First opening the bookmark in the alternate Bible pane (set up for link targets) then copying the reference into the main pain, to all the resources linked to that pane will be synchronized to it.

I spent the time to explain because with all the "conveniences" of Logos I sort of expected such a basic feature and perhaps they can apply their tremendous creativity to the problem, or explain a good solution.

I tried your suggestion, but doesn't really help much. Dragging the Bookmark opens a new tab/pane. That new pane isn't part of any existing synchronized group. I still have to make it part of the right group or copy the reference into the Bible pane that is already set up to synchronize. Either way it just seems like it detracts from the efficiency of using the Bookmarks.

I must be missing something: why don't you just type the new reference in the reference box in the main Bible? Or open the TOC and click on the right passage if you don't remember the exact reference?

What you are describing is a feature of the default lectionary format although not through the use of bookmarks.I think you are trying to use the wrong tool here. What I don't understand is why typing a passage into the primary panel and letting it propagate is not sufficient. True it is more than one click but it is hardly onerous.

2 more options to consider. Set the linkset in the send hyperlinks here pane to the same value as your main Bible pane. That will give you the same "synchronization" ... Or, When the bookmark opens in the send here pane by default, Copy and paste the reference into the main Bible pane. Either will give you the same functionality.

One more thing; Remember the forward/back navigation arrows. For your example of different chapters in John, you can just go back and forth by clicking the appropriate arrow.You can scroll through the panes you have recently opened.

Well I would then ask, what's the point of Bookmarks?

I am studying a number of different sections of Scripture, preparing sermons on several passages in John, studying Revelation, Ephesians, Daniel and Genesis for various purposes. I will work on one study for some time then switch, or I'll want to switch back and forth between several passages relating to one study. So if I follow your suggestion, I'll need a notebook or some note software outside Logos to jot down where I left off in any one study or more often what group of relevant passages I'm looking at as part of one study. If I had physical books I stick those little colored tape tabs at different locations in my books or use large bookmarks if I'm just reading through.

To me Logos is all about convenience. And I find that this is one area where it isn't and wanted to either prompt Logos to think about it or find out how I could accomplish what I need with the existing software.

One reason I have the "Send hyperlinks here" pane set to a different sync group is this: suppose I'm studying Acts and have commentary and language panes sync'd to it (group A), but a commentary or language help refers to the OT and I click on that link to study the context of the reference in my second Bible pane (group F). I don't want my main pane and all my other linked panes to switch to that reference, because then it isn't so easy to get back to where I started. The way I have it, if I want to have the commentary look at the OT reference, I can just switch the commentary pane to group F and when I'm done set it back to A and I haven't lost my place in Acts.

You could say well, use the arrow keys or "back" icon in the Acts pane, but I may have jumped around to many references and frankly I find that in Logos 5 that "back" function gets lost. It's just my impression, but it doesn't seem as reliable as Logos 3 was for this use.

I agree with you that Logos has a single scripture source per study/sermon model i.e. a sermon is on passage x with supporting passages y, z ... That model doesn't work well in the liturgical church environment.

What I see has the first hint of a better approach is seen by the following steps.

clear workspace
on homepage click on lectionary day title
in the default layout, you can now click on the readings and the page will repopulate for that reading.

Not perfect but a step in the right direction.
