Please explain how Text Comparison syncs with Bible location

My Text Comparison (TC) tab is linked to my Bible resources. The Bibles are set to navigate by "Verse". I am using L5.

I'm a bit perplexed over the logic of how the location of the TC does or doesn't update when the Bible location changes. Here is what I have observed:

- If I click on a verse in a Bible (without any selection highlight), the TC tab does not update to that verse.

- If I select (highlight) any part of one or more Bible verses, the TC tab does update.

- If I then click on a single Bible verse while that span is still highlighted, the TC tab does update -- EXCEPT when the click is within the span of the highlight (for example, highlight verses 17-18, then click in verse 18: the TC still shows verses 17-18).

- But if I first click in the highlighted verse(s) so that the highlight is removed, then click on a verse, the TC does not update.

Conclusions:

- Click on a Bible verse but without a selection highlight = TC does not update.

- Highlight any part of one or more verses = TC does update.

- Click within a selected span = TC does not update.

- Scroll with the scroll bar or Alt + Up/Down = TC does update.

Wow. That doesn't seem very intuitive, and it is hard to remember. Can anybody explain the logic and benefit of that system? Why doesn't the TC always always reflect the Bible location?

Maybe it is difficult for me because I was expecting the TC to sync to whatever is in the Location box -- whether or not any text is highlighted.

This is a feature of Logos. You must scroll to the verse in order to update linked resources.

Guides are also affected the same way as TC! Logos have explained that location is not affected by clicking elsewhere in case that was accidental. But if you only want to perform a function for that verse it will not affect the physical location in the other linked resources. So if you right click a word or highlight words the linked Tools/Guides will update to save you clicking that function in the context menu!! Whether you wanted that function is another matter, but if you did select it from the menu you will be routed to the linked tool/guide!

That's as good as I can explain it.

Neither Guides nor TC will update in response to the following action in a Bible:
- Click anywhere when no text is highlighted.

Guides will update their location in response to the following actions in a Bible:
- Scroll.
- Alt + Up/Down.
- Add a reference to the Reference box, then Enter or click the Go arrow at right end of that box.
- Highlight (select) text.
- Click outside highlighted text.

A Text Comparison (TC) tab is different in the following way:
- If a range of verses is shown in TC, the above actions will update the TC only if they go outside that range.

The means the TC can get "stuck" displaying a range of verses even while navigating individual verses in the Bible. This is especially bothersome when the range in TC unintentionally bumped to an entire chapter.

I don't understand why the TC should be so difficult to update if it is displaying a range of verses, while the Guides can be updated more easily.

I can't replicate your behavior for the TC - for me it follows the Bible in the same manner as the PB ... although with considerable more delay. How much time are you giving it to propagate the change in verse?

Good question, MJ. The TC will never update under the conditions described (e.g. in more than an hour).

Here is what is happening (highlighted text it simply to help visualize the location).

1. Psa 1:2-3 is focused in the NIV; both the TC and the Passage Guide (PG) reflect that range.

2. Psa 1:2 is focused; the PG reflects this change immediately, but the TC still shows 1:2-3 because the new location is within the original range. It will stay like this forever.

3. Psa 1:1 is focused, and the TC updates accordingly because the new location is outside the original range.

Has anyone here ever had to wait a long time because he or she clicked in a commentary which had a very large range of verses? It happens all the time to me.

I know there are workarounds such as to not have the text comparison window not be linked to any link set A-F. The suggestion I have would be to force the text comparison window to only display one verse at a time - esword does that even if you type in a whole book, e.g. "Acts.

The information window can make for the same waiting as well. There however we need it to look for people, places, things, topics over a range of verses.

That really would not work for me as my most common use of text comparison is to compare verse mappings across translations. What is helpful to you would, in this case, render the tool useless to me.

A selectable setting in the window would work for everyone. I've often wanted a verse limit in that window too.
