Hard-Copy Trade-In Program

I don't know about anyone else, but as a poor college and seminary student, I couldn't afford Logos. Now that I am out in itinerant ministry full-time, the Lord blessed and enabled me to purchase a Gold base package. However, here is my problem: all of the books I purchased for undergrad and seminary—textbooks, lexicons, commentaries, etc — are incompatible with my new study software.

The thought has crossed my mind on several occasions, I wonder if there is any kind of hard-for-soft-copy trade-in program. I would LOVE to trade in my hefty BDAG (which is sitting unused in storage in Indiana, in mint condition!) for an copy of the logos resource that I can take with me anywhere across the country in my travels. Think of it!

Now, I understand that the good folks at Logos have put a lot of hard work and long hours into these resources, but with pre-pub, I would imagine once they have been published, much of their cost has been taken care of already. This would enable them to resell the original hard-copy resource and for late-coming logos aficionados like myself, it would enable them to get up to speed with their current library collection at a fraction of the cost!

I am sure they would never go for it.

Ps. Try e-bay, Amazon or Craigslist. I sold my mint condition, hardback copy of Lenski for $150 bucks. There are people out there who are still willing to buy the print version. By the way, I had bought Lenski for $200 brand new back in 2004 and sold it in 2008 for $150. So try offering your print resources a little bit cheaper to other students or do like I did with the rest of my print library that I used to have -- I donated it to my church after I had sold part of it and didn't have time to be checking emails and replying to people who were interested in some of the books. It was a hassle after a while getting in touch with people, but hey, trust me, I felt really good after I donated my books. Plus, when I move I'll never have to carry any boxes any more -- phew!!! What a relief!!!

I think you are right.

I decided not to sell my paper copies of books but rather to give them away. I estimate that I have given away close to 2,000 paper copies of my library to various other libraries locally and around the world.

For clarification: When Logos takes books from the public domain and offer them in "community pricing," then their costs have been roughly been matched. This isn't true with books still in copyright. You seem to be confusing "community pricing" with "pre-pub." They aren't the same thing.

Your best bet is to sell your books online. I typically use Amazon.

When I bought BDAG in Logo I already had BAGD. About 2 years ago I ran across a forum user who only wanted to look up a word occasionally. I mailed her my BAGD and I got more shelf space and she got a resource she didn't have.

I know there are many theological school around the world who would LOVE to receive your dead tree volumes as a donation.

I am still selling off my print library where Logos replaced my volumes. To a very large extent, those sales have made for an easier transition. I found a 3rd edition BAGD at the library for $1. I sold my old 2nd edition on eBay and then the 3rd on Amazon. Made it quite easy to dive in to getting it in Logos.

However you choose to leverage your library, God is remarkably gracious to those who love His Word.

I either give them away or sell them on Amazon. I have had great success selling through Amazon.

I gave some of my books away before putting them on Amazon (my daughters idea to help with her college costs). I also used the money to purchase more books from logos as well as paying for my sons braces. I did not sell books that I did not have or could not get in logos.

FWIW, I too have ebay'd and craigslist nearly all of my dead tree books. It funded much of my transition to digital.
