My question is for the never having used a Mac before will the i5 2.8GHz or the 2.2 GHz i7 Quad-core be better?

And it be worth giving up half the storage space to have the i7 Quad-core for Logos, not that really have to have 512GB but more is always nice in my experience.

From what I understand Logos only uses multiple cores for indexing. My old i7 laptop with a first generation Core processor indexes just as fast as my fourth generation Haswell i5 which is impressive considering the speed difference. May quad core AMD indexes faster than both! So for indexing more physical cores is better.

For everything else I really can't tell much difference except the desktop seems a little slower, but the laptops turbo speed is only 2.2. So if it is running off only one core this makes sense.

All three have SDD and this in my experience has the most dramatic effect on speed. I upgraded both the laptop and the i5 desktop. The AMD I built from the ground up with an SDD. Just to give you an idea of how much difference a SDD make the i5 was only recently upgraded with an SDD. With just a old fashion spinning HD it was the slowest at running Logos. Even the old laptop ran circles around it!

These are all Windows computers, but I think this will give you info that will help you decide what is really important.

Last year i also replaced my HDD with a SSD and even with this only using an i3 2.2 GHz it does good.

The biggest difference to me between the two is display size. I had a similar decision about a year ago and went with the 15" (a refurbished model). For me, and the fact that my MBP is my primary computer, the screen real estate was the deciding issue. Were I to travel more, I may have gone with the 13".

If you are perfectly happy with the 13" display, and plenty of Logos users are, that's a good choice.

By the way, check out Apple's certified refurbished computers, if you have not already. You get the same warranty, get a great computer, and save some cash (or get better specs for about the same as off-the-shelf new).

I believe either one will be a blessing that you will enjoy. Personally, I would go with the larger screen. But I think you will be perfectly happy with either. And I hope you enjoy it.

My choice would depend on which versions of the processors they use. I see that the 13" MBP no longer have the i7 option.

I'd like to hear from the programming team at Logos on how the use the cores.

Hi Lee:

The 15' MBP is the faster machine and has better benchmark scores (according to MacWorld Mag). It also has a larger display which I think you will probably like better than the 13". The big difference between them is really the capacity of the SSD Flash storage. Retina MacBook Pro computers are not really user upgradeable so it's important to purchase what you think your needs will be for the future. You can order the 15" with a larger SSD if you so choose but at a higher cost. Also keep in mind that you might want to add Apple Care to your purchase which extends the warranty to 3 years from the normal 1 year.

Personally, I would go with the larger screen.

All things being equal, I might agree. However... MacBooks aren't as "upgradable" as they used to be. You can always hook up a larger monitor (or two!) to your MacBook. Since the smaller one has a better processor... and more importantly, twice the storage!... I recommended the 13. If the choice were between the 11 and 13, I would strongly recommend the 13. The 11 inch is too small for me.

That is my understanding too. A tradeoff for lighter weight and more compact = Not upgradable.

Which is why I buy refurbished and typically not the latest and greatest. In real world usage, I doubt I would ever know the difference.

I see so many Lightly used ones on Amazon. And i know the Apple store also has many refurbished ones. It will be maybe 8 months before I'm back in the USA so I should have a few good choices at the local Apple Store by then.

I've had very good experience with refurbished Apple products. The only thing not there is the fancy packaging ... not needed, really. I can't tell the difference in the product itself.

I've bought an Apple-refurbished iPad 3, iPad Air, and retina MBP, but the packaging was different than off-the-shelf new. It was similar, but you knew the products were refurbished.

Yes. Ordered and shipped direct from Apple. Items I have ordered came in a plain white box ... no Apple logo or product imprint on the outside. However, impeccable in packaging inside and the product was new in every respect visually and in function. Printed documentation and everything. Beautiful. Saved a bunch and have never been disappointed. Apple really has a wonderful process and product in the "refurbished" space.

I have a MacMini with i7 2.3. Plenty fast. I notice that indexing hordes and hogs RAM. My drive is conventional.

I have a hybrid SSD/HD with an i7 for a windows laptop. It's blazingly fast. I can't imagine you'd be unhappy regardless of your choice. My preference is for a bigger screen if that becomes your only computer and you don't have a display to plug it in to at home or work.

There are a lot of questions that go along with a laptop purchase...

A) Are you going to use it while mobile or traveling a lot? (Smaller is lighter and generally better for this, a bigger one to carry around adds weight and bulk and for someone on the move, especially if you have a bad neck or back, that gets old fast)

Is it going to be a desktop replacement/your main PC with not a lot of mobile use? (the performance of the hardware in your choices do not matter... either one of them will rock the logos software far beyond nicely... what you should be more concerned with in this question is the larger more friendly sized screen, speakers and keyboard)

C) Unless you are going to be using the Laptop for photography or some other storage critical use... the amount of space for your Logos needs is pretty much a non-issue, there is plenty with either. Even if it is also a photography laptop... don't forget to be backing up and these days as cheap as storage is, just have two backup drives so there is always two copies of everything and that way you can keep the laptop storage cleaner.

D) Already mentioned it but... the hardware choices you have will be running it at top performance, either one. I am on a 2008 MBP, Dual core, 4GB also with a few different versions of OS's (VM Windows and Linux and lot of snapshots = lots of storage use) and storage is not a factor at 200GB... if I got rid of my snapshots or VM's my HD would be empty even with a ridiculous amount of Logos books (Been with them since 99 I think)

Bottom line... either is awesome, what do you want to carry around or what do you want to be sitting in front of you? (Don't worry about the rest)

Hello I do a lot of traveling every day i carry a backpack about 8 - 10 pounds.

I also walk maybe 6 miles per day.

My current laptop is my only computer and if i get a macbook pro it wold replace it.

The reason i talked about SSD size is i keep almost 220GB on my system and i don't like a small free size left so the 512GB would make me happy.
Seminary and Bible study is my main use, both I also like to keep my podcast with me which is 60 + GB space but it is hard to get rid of them...

Sounds like the 13" is the right one for you then and you can always set up a nice spot at home with a Display Port adaptor and full size monitor + KB/mouse for when you are really digging in.

Another nice part of the 13" can be battery life, for a guy on the go like you that is really nice. I don't remember at this point if you are looking at Refurbs at all but they do save you a few bucks and are top notch in my experience. (2012, i7 quad core, 8Gb Ram 13" it has been spot on and I saved $300 I think.)

It should be really good for Logos and I am looking at this as a last computer replacement. Note My Wife has been very good during our marriage I have had maybe 20 different computers during our 26 years...
