Easy - Logos Group Bible Study Mode (with instant access)

I would like to suggest a way (using my Windows Tablet and Logos 5.x) to quickly open to a particular Bible book,chapter, and verse.

Sounds simple right? To date its not with my Surface Pro Windows Tablet.

I am in a Bible study and my turn comes up and I have to switch to another app to get to the next reading I have to do for the group or ask someone to bypass me and the next person take over.

Yes I can revert to a printed copy or even something like my ESV app in Windows (which has a fairly quick search, pull down and go to ability) or an Android App named Bible (which is not always so simple to use either).

In short, isn't there an EASY LOGOS BIBLE RETRIEVAL APP for those just looking - gasp - to get to a particular part of one of the Bibles they own within Logos quickly please.

I'd like to click on 2 -3 icons/pulldowns and voila...I am where I need to be in The Bible and useful and productive immediately within my group.

Yes, your suggestion is pretty much a no-brainer. The problem is real pain. After a few times struggling with 'my verse' (my turn) in Bible class, I put Logos away. Too embarrassing.

But I've always argued that developers that used their own product would figure things out pretty quickly.

I don't have a Windows Tablet so may be missing the point.

In Logos 5 on my desktop I can type in the passage reference in an open Bible (or enter the "open" command in a command box) and get to the required place.

Is the issue on the Tablet that typing isn't easy or are you looking explicitly for some thing like the Android / iPad app verse picker?

Graham, I can't speak for Josh. But your last line pretty much nailed it.

Not trying to be funny, but I really can't remember any tablet Bible software that didn't include a picker. I think I've had some of the earliest. Granted Logos5 is text oriented (DOS'y commands no less). I've really gotten too used to iOS spin the dials!

But to give Logos credit, in my annual Bible verse picker competition (I did it just once), the Olive Tree picker was superior, allowing the user to pick without having to re-trace all the steps (book/chapter/verse). However, Logos may well have since pulled ahead with its integrated history list (VERY useful in a Church of Christ, where preachers serve up a heady list of relating verses, bouncing back and forth as needed).

I haven't tried it recently but wonder if the (basic) Windows 8 app (available in the Microsoft store) would provide the functionality being requested on the Tablet?

This does seem like an obvious enhancement and missing basic functionality.

Just for clarification... you're looking for a big, easy touch-enabled verse picker for the Logos Bible Software 5 desktop app, when run on a Widnows 8 tablet, right?

Some of the follow ups mention needing a picker for Android / iOS. We have one -- when you tap the reference at the top of a Bible on an iPad you get a color-coded picker for book of the Bible, then chapter, then verse. Are you looking for a different format or style?

My experience is similar to those of the OP. I do use the iPad coloured verse picker ... I like it but it is slow.

Let us say that we are looking at Romans. I am in Romans 2:1 and need to move to Romans 8:1. Why do I have to select (read peer and select) Romans again? Why does the grid collapse so far each time? When I open the verse picker from a particular chapter/verse I would expect the book/chapter/verse panels to all be available so that I can move quickly to a different verse in the same chapter, or a different chapter in the same book.

Personally, I am not a fan of the scrolling pickers as used in things lie the calendar app ... I find find that they are cumbersome and only useful on a phone sized screen ... but I know (at least with iOS) that you do have different UI ... thank you [:D]

In an ideal world, I would like to see a list of the last 5 to 10 last 'picked' (not visited/scrolled) verses on the same 'verse picker' screen, sorted by most recent.

I agree with you entirely - addressing this would be a really useful enhancement to the current verse picker.

Call it a GROUP BIBLE STUDY MODE if you like. Martin has a sense for what I am hoping to do. The android picker is ok....something similar or better in Windows 8.1 for my Tablet would be great too.

When I first saw this thread, I briefly considered writing a little Windows Tray Verse Picker. It should be possible with the Logos COM API and wouldn't be too difficult, maybe a little fiddly with the sizing for various screen resolutions. But, honestly, using the TOC works pretty well on touch screen. It's not ideal; I would much prefer a really nice Verse Picker, but it is very usable. There is also the History panel that is very useful for moving back and forth between verses. Again this is not ideal, as I would prefer an option to have a popup history that opened on a gesture and closed after a selection, or an autohide panel (ie a history panel that stayed out of the way, not taking up valuable screen space).

I suspect, or at least hope, we won't have to wait much longer for some nice touch screen support. If I thought it wasn't coming, I might reconsider writing that addon. Or better, maybe Logos could have an internal addon contest to celebrate 2^8th and post the best addons here! They could likely throw it together in hundredth of the time it would take me.

Some of us asked for a "verse picker" for the Windows App 16 months ago http://community.logos.com/forums/p/57269/409009.aspx#409009. Since that App is not being developed, it is even more important to get a quick Touch-enabled way to navigate in L5.

The expandable/collapsible directory helps some, but it is still tedious when you have a preacher/teacher who did most of his study in the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge or Thompson Chain-Reference Bible and thinks a multitude of cross-references is a sign of deep study.

It seems that if you are going to still support Windows, Logos is going to have to support touch better. Between my tablet and desktop computers I rarely use my laptop any longer. When it comes time to replace it something like the MS Surface looks very attractive. Set it in a dock at the office, use it in tablet mode will away, and use the keyboard when I have to occasionally type will traveling. However, hearing how touch unfriendly Logos 5 is currently it makes me think sticking with the iPad is a better option for my mobile needs. However, if Logos made Logos more touch friendly the Surface become a very compelling product indeed.

Spouting out verse references (complete with memorized phrases) has a long history. Certainly pre-American Civil War. That was back in the lively days of 'the Good Book', people 'knowing their Bible', and dualing ministers in the backwoods where a good argument (multi-verse) or fried chicken for lunch was the big question.

I accidentally visited a church in Las Cruces New Mexico where the congregation equally knew the verses being referenced, so that a lookup would be for the exact wording. I'd suspect this was also true in the 1st century from the OT.
