Bug: BibleFacts (Places) Lachish Not in Dropdown List
Hi,
To reproduce the bug:
- Open BibleFacts
- Enter 2 Kings 18
- Look through the list ... Lachish not found
However Lachish can be found on Logos 4 Biblical Places with the same passage
I can find Lachish in Logos 5 if I go to another passage 2 Kings 14

Dave,
Thanks for confirmation.
I fear this is something systemic. I was wondering why I cannot find places as illustrated above, so I went to dig an old screenshot for Logos 4, noticed it has 13 places in the list (a few more hidden below), where as the screenshot on Logos 5 only has 2 places + 1 region. Something is not right [:(]

I will create a case for development to look into this issue. It's worth mentioning that your Logos 4 results are still there - if you type "2 Kings 1-37" into Tools > Explorer, the Biblical Places section has all of those locations, including Lachish. This seems to be an issue integrating the Places data into the Bible Facts tool (in Logos 4 the tool was "Places" only).

Hi,
I am running Logos for Mac 5.2a Release Candidate 1 (5.2.1.0063) just to keep this item alive here.
As pointed out by Dylan, Logos 4 style Biblical Places is still working in Explorer, Passage Guide.
Can Logos consider to provide User an option in the BibleFacts Report to select a narrower report that only shows one of the Biblical People, Places, Things or Events. Hope that is a reasonable request.
Thank you for listening [:)]

LimJK could you add a screen shot that shows what you mean? When I went to Logos 5 I could not identify what you are suggesting ... probably my problem but ...

Hi MJ,
See the screen short(s) (i) Logos 4 Biblical Places and (ii) Logos 5 BibleFacts of the very first post.
In Logos 4, Biblical Places, Biblical People & Biblical things are 3 separate report / apps. In Biblical Places if I enter 1 Kings 18 in the Reference Box ... I get all the places listed in the drop down list.
Whereas In Logos 5 BibleFacts (Integrated Biblical People, Places, Things and Events into a single Report / Apps). When I enter the same Bible Reference 1 Kings 18 ... I do not get all the places listed like in Logos 4. The example I used here is Lachish. That is the issue I am trying to raise in this thread.
I found out that the same "Biblical Places" function still exists in Logos 5 as part of Explorer and Passage Guide. Just that it is not available / accessible to Logos 5 user directly as independent report / apps. So I am suggesting Biblical Places, People, Things and Events be made available within the larger Bible Facts Report / Apps.
If I am not clear, I will try to explain again [:)]

I understand - I hadn't looked at the drop down menu. I agree with your suggestion now that I understand.

Developers have looked at this and it is the intended behavior since we intentionally combined these tools into one tool for Logos 5.0.

Angela,
Thanks for your reply[:)] I Appreciate the value of combining the Biblical "Places", "People", "Things" together into bible facts - that is Good [Y]
... but[:(] , I do not understand the developers point about "intended behavior"(?)
Specifically if I enter a passage 2 Kings 18 into BibleFacts, you should be combining the results for what I get for entering 2 Kings 18 into Biblical Places, People, Things. I have no clue how you combine the results. So I thought it is a bug and still think it is a bug [:(]
I would greatly appreciate if someone can explain the concept / logic / rationale of how you combine the results shown in the drop down list and why remove useful information (from a user's point of view - see the original post). Thank you.

LimJK, sorry for the confusion [:(] I should have phrased my reply better.
The intended behavior is for the request that you made for Logos to create an option for User to be able to select a narrower report in Bible Facts in Logos 5. :
Can Logos consider to provide User an option in the BibleFacts Report to select a narrower report that only shows one of the Biblical People, Places, Things or Events. Hope that is a reasonable request.
But there is still an active case in Development for the issue where Bible Facts is not giving the complete drop down list for "2 Kings 18" (does not show the entry "Lachish"). This issue is still a bug and Development is investigating it [:)]

Logos,
Just reviewing this thread to see if the problem I reported here has been fixed for 5.2b Service Release 1 (5.2.2.1496)
As above I was expecting "Lachish" to appear in the drop down list when I enter the Bible Reference 2 Kings 18. I can confirm that it is still not working.
However, thankfully there is some improvement [:)], "Lachish" will appear in the Drop down list if I Enter a narrower Bible Reference (I am using ESV)
- the specific verse 2 Kings 18:14, or
- the specific Paragraph Reference 2 Kings 18:13-18 or
- 2 Paragraphs Reference (including either 1 para before or after) 2 Kings 18:9-18 or 18:13-25
I thought it is a reasonable solution.

It appears to me that there may be a maximum number of entries that will be returned. I'm not positive but there is significant consistency in the number of entries returned for any long passage.

Angela, thanks for jumping in and responding to this thread.
My experience with "Bible Facts" is that it doesn't work reliably for places.
We right-click a place name, choose Place in the context menu, and click Bible Facts. At this point I expect Logos to open a map that relates to the period, and show me where the place is. Sometimes it works, but many times it doesn't work as I expect.
Let’s take a few examples from Kings, since that’s the topic of this post. I’ll use ESV for these examples.
- 2 Kings 1:1. Right-click Moab. I am not offered Moab as a place at all.
- 2 Kings 1:2. Right-click Ekron. I’m taken to a map titled Judgeship of Samson, which is several centuries out. If I click on other maps along the bottom, after 8 or 9 attempts (working left-to-right) I find that there are maps of the Divided Kingdoms or Regional attacks on Judah and Jerusalem.
- 2 Kings 1:3. Right-click Tishbite. I’m not offered a place for Tishbe.
- 2 Kings 3:9. Right-click Edom. Place is not an option.
- 2 Kings 4:42. Right-click Baal-shalishah. “No illustrations available.”
- 2 Kings 5:1. Right-click Syria. Place is not an option.
- 2 Kings 6:13. Right-click Dothan. Brings up Joshua’s Campaign. The map titled Ministries of Elijah and Elisha would be more relevant.
- 2 Kings 10:29. Right-click Dan. Brings up Judgeship of Samson where Dan is a tribal region west of Benjamin. That’s just plain wrong. Wasn't the second golden installed in the city of Dan, just south of Mt Hermon?
Does anyone else find this problematic?
Thanks for listening.

Hi Allen
A fascinating set of examples. A lot of this seems to relate to tagging. Some specific comments below:
2 Kings 1:1. Right-click Moab. I am not offered Moab as a place at all.
Moab is tagged as a people group as opposed to a place. It could be argued that this is appropriate in this context
2 Kings 1:2.
Agreed this is not helpful but it raises the question as to whether the Bible Facts tool is intended to take into account the period relating to the "launch passage" or whether it is just keyed to the place. I guess the latter is the case.
2 Kings 1:3. Right-click Tishbite. I’m not offered a place for Tishbe.
It is tagging on the person - not the place and, to be fair, the place isn't mentioned!
2 Kings 3:9. Right-click Edom. Place is not an option.
The entity being tagged is "king of Edom" as opposed to Edom the place
2 Kings 4:42. Right-click Baal-shalishah. “No illustrations available.”
This isn't helpful - but from the linked dictionaries there seems to be some dispute over where this place actually is
2 Kings 5:1. Right-click Syria. Place is not an option.
Again, tagging is for the Syrian people not the place
2 Kings 6:13. Right-click Dothan. Brings up Joshua’s Campaign. The map titled Ministries of Elijah and Elisha would be more relevant.
Agreed - but see earlier comment about how this tool is keyed
2 Kings 10:29. Right-click Dan. Brings up Judgeship of Samson where Dan is a tribal region west of Benjamin. That’s just plain wrong. Wasn't the second golden installed in the city of Dan, just south of Mt Hermon?
I believe so - and the same mistagging is present in 1 Kings 12:29.
They should be linked to "Dan (city)"
Does anyone else find this embarrassing for a supposedly context-sensitive menu?
Yes - but it would be good to get clarification from Logos as to how "context-sensitive" they intend it to be and comments on some of the tagging referenced above.
Graham

Thank you, Graham for your well-considered reply.
Tishbite was probably not a fair expectation, so I've crossed that one off the list.
Baal-shalishah is also very rare, so hardly surprising they didn't have a map for that one.I do think that countries (Moab, Edom, Syria, etc) should qualify as places though.
Regards.
