How to Use Logos 5 to Create Bible Studies for Small Groups

Hello,

I'm fairly new to Logos 5, so I was wondering how to use Logos 5 to create simple, practical, insightful Bible Studies for Small Groups.

I know there is a HANDOUT option, but am unsure about the practicality of it, having tried it once.

Ideally, I'm looking to create Handouts or a Guide for a 12-week lesson plan around a theological subject, or a Book of the Bible etc. I want to be able to go through together with a group and be able to discuss the topics in a easy, accessible way.

Any idea, or help in this direction would be highly appreciated.

Logos 5 will gather all of the needed information for you BUT YOU will have to do the work to create and edit the lessons.

However there are some prepared studies available.

If all of the members of the small group have Logos then the group picks a topic and each member brings their findings to the next meeting.

Handouts proved to be a disappointment and Logos will not develop them further.

I use Clippings for small groups and they are very effective when printed. Basically, you clip selected excerpts from resources via the right-click menu and then add your own comments under Notes.

I strongly prefer to do inductive, discussion-based Bible studies based on specific Bible passages. In one group we're going through Genesis, in another Hebrews.

What I do is 1) limit the study to a specific verse length; 2) begin to ask questions about what I'm reading (what, how, who, why, when, where); 3) if there are quotes (OT in NT, e.g.), I'll read the quote in the original context and probably create a question that connects the two on a contextual level; 4) I don't shy away from totally subjective questions (how would you feel, if that happened to you), nor questions that don't have clear, definitive answers, but acknowledge them as such, 5) prepare by having a well-researched answer to all my questions (this is the Logos part), and let that research shape the questions, and often create more questions. (Everyone gets a copy of the questions, with room to write answers/notes, if they want.)

I try to lead Bible studies in the way I want the participants to study the Bible privately. In other words the teaching method (be curious, wonder, ponder, look it up, compare, provide/test tentative answers, etc.) is part of the teaching goal. For places, I'll often have them look up where they are in the maps in the back of their Bibles (if they have Bibles with maps-which I encourage). The first question I always ask, after reading through the text is "What catches your attention in this passage?" (or some variation of that question).

This works well for groups of up to about 20, though about 5-10 is best. For larger groups, a presentation-type approach seems better. When I do it that way, I still try to make it as interactive as possible, and try to model an approach to Scripture that I would like to see practiced individually as well.

Note: for this post I am wearing a Verbum hat because that is who we are dealing with. For the rest of you, please consider "Verbum" to be a very odd spelling of "Logos"[;)]

This is what we are doing to prototype such studies for Verbum. I am specifically concerned with reaching people in small rural parishes, the homebound, people isolated because of language needs ... Another member of the team is concerned with supplementing actual small groups and facilitating "make-up" sessions.

1. We have chosen a six session study guide from within the Logos catalogue.

2. We have gotten a commitment from Verbum that a Reading Plan dividing at the session boundaries will be available.

3. We are making a Reading List that breaks it down to task level including some supplemental materials for those who are interested

4. We are making a Note File for the facilitator that provides quick access to (a) answers to likely questions (b) original document links for quotations not linked in Verbum

5. We are making a Supplemental PB for participants that includes the essential information a facilitator would have given - not relevant in the case of an actual small group not using Faithlife.

6. We are creating a very simple introduction to Faithlife, Biblia and Verbum first concentrating on what is required to participate and slowly adding optional skills. The intent is to make it possible to participate using only Faithlife and Biblia but to introduce Verbum slowly so that new users are not overwhelmed and frightened off.

7. We have set up a Faithlife group specifically for this study.

8. Verbum is providing a demonstration session with appropriate bulletin inserts and posters as well as a customized bundle.

9. Because we have specifically chosen a program for Lent, we will also be encouraging the use of a Calendar Devotional as well as the Lectionary and Saints features.

I believe we are setting up a pattern that will translate well across any small group that has a study guide or discussion questions to attach Notes to. In effect you are providing this

EXCEPT that Logos does not yet allow the sharing of compiled PB's so our own materials can't serve as the base for notes. I know this is being worked on, I know it has been promised for some time, but it is currently the primary obstacle. You can create the material in Verbum, export to Word for formatting and treat the small group as if it is not Verbum based. You can use Reading Lists and Instructor PB's to make sure information is at your fingertips. But you can't quite have the participants using Verbum as well.

David, I do this frequently. I use MS Word and MS Publisher to create the final product. I make use of copy and paste and the built-in copy verse function that MS Word can make use of. I do not know of any way to produce what I think you want in Logos itself.

I hope this is not a violation of Forum rules, but since Logos abandoned the Handouts feature I don't think this product competes with Logos.

I often use http://www.lessonmaker8.com/ for compiling the handout/studyguide. But I use Logos 5 extensively in preparing myself to present the lesson by studying original languages, multiple commentaries, and cultural background information --NONE of which are available in the LessonMaker program.

It's the WordSearch bible software program. They handed us free copies of the software in seminary. I laughed because I had Logos.

LessonMaker is now sold by WordSearch. When I purchased it, it was a standalone product. It appears it has now been integrated into WS10 as a resource.

I would only need the Lesson Maker software for my purposes. If I just get the WS engine only, will I be able to access the Lesson Maker resource, or would I have to get that separately?

If you find an old (2006 or older) version of the LessonMaker software, it is distinct from the WordSearch program. (Which is why I posted link). If you get newer version of the WS engine you would also have to purchase the LessonMaker resource--This is a competitor to Logos and should not be linked on the Forum.
