Macbook Pro 4 Logos .. Question?

I am thinking which is better, if money is a issue.

I am thinking i5 with 16gb ram, 512gb SSD w/Retina, or i7 with 8gb, and 512gb ssd w/retina both 13".

Is it better to have more ram or the faster cpu?

Is the 16GB realy needed because of the coming 64bit logos?

The next computer may need to last for 5 plus years.. this about a macbook pro retina 13"

Mine is an i7 ivy bridge with 8GB currently. I would normally advise you to go with the i7 and 8gb, but I am on a non retina model and can upgrade to 16GB... As I understand it retina machines have NO memory slots you get what you get. 8GB should be more than enough... but 5 years from now it might be tight... Also I just confirmed the i7 is one of the 2 core models. So may not give as big a boost as a traditional 4 core i7.

For example benchmarks for my computer place the speed at 7339. The current MBP 13" you are looking at has a benchmark of i5 2.6 (4600). The benchmarking sight did not have stats for the 4308U or 4578U processors so I cannot comment on the sped offered by them. I know my old 2010 i7 dual core was rated around 2900, but i would suspect these new processors would be well above the 5k mark.

So I would say Ram is likely most important. If memory serves the SSD is what really makes the big difference with Logos.

I have used logos on a number of machines. My main machine is i7 16gb but logos performs very well on a standard macbook air. I don't think you will get much speed boost for logos from machines faster than that because it is already so performant.

if you are using it mostly for Logos, 8GB of Ram (even with Logos 64bit) would be sufficient now. However, Logos has a history of heavy hardware demands, and it is anybody's guess what the demands be in 3-5 years.

i7 is generally better than i5 and quad-core is better (if run at the same clock speed) than dual-core in multitasking environments.

500GB of storage is on the low side, and upgrading is impossible after you buy. If budget is limited I would consider a cheap external drive for non-essential documents/music/pictures/etc.

My Mac Mini is an i7. Most of the time you don't need 16GB RAM, but I notice that I find the RAM is nearly all gobbled for indexing. I'd never normally suggest spending $2K+ but you'll likely never regret doing so if you use Logos a lot and prefer a Mac. I was very happy upgrading my Mini to 16GB. It was like tripling the power of the computer.

A bit of an understatement since I believe you would need to take and solder new memory in place. I do believe it is possible just not a good idea. [;)]

The 2.8 GHz i7-4588U has a benchmark of 2979, which is 5.8 % faster. Typically humans notice 10 % or more speed difference. Personally would choose 16 GB Ram so have option to run more programs at the same time.

My major was in computer systems and electronics, but would not think about replacing soldered on memory chips. But upgrading the HDD to a SSD, or just putting a larger SSD in a system is not a problem for me.

I want to try for a refurbished macbook pro 15.4 w/ retina which would give me a quad core cpu, also 8GB to 16GB ram, i could take a 256GB SSD but I really want at least a 512GB SSD, and if I get lucky and it comes with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 512MB of GDDR5 memory or higher that all the better.

I do have two external 1TB back-up drives for non-essentials and emergency back-up in general.

I am overseas now so after i return to the U.S.A. I can pick one, so i am just checking into options now and researching.

If a refurbished 2014 macbook pro retina was an option yes it would be Great!
