I have no words to say rather than to beg you to pray for the Eritrean Christians who are facing brutal persecution from the government. Of course we have to pray for all Christians especially to those who are being persecuted because of their faith.

We are always praying for our brothers and sister in Eritrea and for those who are dispersed through out the near by region. I believe that some kind of Advocacy work must be done on behalf of those who are incarcerated. May God look into this matters and initiate and raise people who have the moral authority to address this issues.

Indeed we must continue to remember many Christians who are being persecuted: Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan (any Moslem dominated country). Christians are under attack throughout the world (even in the United States though not to the same extent).

Thanks for bringing this before us Tes. This is not always reported on mainstream news and since most of us have never experienced such a situation it is easy to overlook. Have you thought of starting a faithlife group for those that are interested can join and keep one another informed and pray through these situations ?

Christians are being persecuted in many countries (mostly Moslem). Even in the United States where we are supposed to have freedom of religion, the Regime in power has been very discriminatory against Christians.

Yes,it is clear this persecution is not to compare with other persecutions , if you have seen the picture of the Somalian brother on the first page who became beheaded ,you could definitely understand what it means. My intension is when I mean we have to pray I don't mean that the persecution should stop,this is not Christ's mission,but what I mean is that may be courageous to stand firm against the Persecution,so that they need God's Grace to endure ,nor do I mean that their persecutors should vanish, they deserve to be prayed for equally as well, that the Lord may open their eyes and got saved.

Quite frankly, the claim of religious persecuted in Eritrea is simply untrue and politicaly motivated as proven time again,

Surly, Eritrea is by far one of the few countries where people of different faith live in harmony--- Lutherans, Catholics, Muslims -- who came as. Guests to the country some time in the past as history teaches us. Planting hate on one faith against the other under the false pretext of worship rights does not constitute religious persecution as you insinuating. FYI, Eritrea is a country of the ancient and the first christian faith where " Wolf in sheep's clothiing " have no place.

Hi Meronite, welcome to the forum. We lose nothing by praying to God for the persecuted Christians. God knows what Eritrea needs and in which conditions the Christians are.God is good. At last what I want to say is this is not a place where we should debate.We pray to all knowing God. We don’t pray for the persecuted only we do pray as well for the persecutors. I want to make it clear that we don't struggle against human beings,but as you can read here our struggle is directed against the power of darkness.Ephesians 6:12 “ For our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world powers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens.”

We love the leaders and the people regardless their beliefs. This is the secret of Christianity.

Eritrea

In 1952, Eritrea joined Ethiopia as part of a federation. When Ethiopia annexed Eritrea as a province 10 years later, a struggle for independence began that ended with victory by the Eritrean rebels in 1991. In 1998, a border war with Ethiopia began, ending with intervention from the U.N. in December 2000 and a peace agreement.

There was a general freedom to practice religion in Eritrea until 2002, when the government announced it would recognize only four religious communities: the Orthodox Church of Eritrea, Sunni Islam, the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran-affiliated Evangelical Church of Eritrea.

From 2002 to 2010, the government has jailed, tortured and killed numerous Eritreans for political and religious reasons, and tortured and killed many of them extra-judicially. Today, it is estimated that between 2,000 and 3,000 Christians are in Eritrean prisons. Believers face deplorable conditions, including torture. Many are held in metal shipping containers with no ventilation or toilet facilities.

A November 2010 religious liberty report says that Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki wants to restrict and pre-empt any formation of people’s association. He fears that religious freedom will lead to evangelism by Christian groups and thereby cause social tensions that can be exploited by “outside forces” to destabilize the nation. Additionally, he views democracy as a threat to the nation’s unity and stability.

Despite open persecution, the government continues to support its statement issued in May 2003 that "no groups or persons are persecuted in Eritrea for their beliefs or religion." Of thousands of Christians in detention, not one has been charged with a crime or faced trial. While concerns over Christian persecution have been raised at various international forums, there has been little change in the attitude and policy of the one-party government.

Prayer Requests

Pray for Christians in prison, especially those being held in metal shipping containers. Ask God to encourage and strengthen them as they endure horrendous conditions.
Praise God for those Eritrean Christians who have managed to escape and share their stories with the West! Pray their stories will inspire Christians to pray for Eritrea.
Ask God to further the gospel in this very young African nation that many have not heard of.
Pray for humility on the parts of the government leaders.
