I'm new. Whenever I try to do a search, my screen shows quite a few advertisements for books for purchase from the store. I don't want to see these. How can I stop the program trying to push these onto me?

I think you mean that when you run a "guide". I am not aware of ads showing up when performing a "search."
Have you tried right clicking and removing that section from the guide? See the WIKI about customizing guides.
Ken,
If you are referring to a guide window (Passage Guide, Exegetical Guide, etc), you can creating a custom guide (as alabama mentions) with custom sections in it, or you can just collapse the Bookstore section by clicking on the triangle next to the section title. The collapsed state is remembered the next time you use the guide.
If you're referring to the home page sections that have suggested purchases and sale items, then you can customize the homepage by clicking on the gear icon at the lower left of the home page and disable the sections you don't want to see. You can also disable displaying the home page at startup by opening the Program Settings window (from the Tools menu) and changing the "At Startup Open To" setting to something different.
Welcome to the forums.
