Standing Order Bids for Community Pricing

The solution for stalled Community Pricing resources is right before our eyes every time we visit the forum:

IF only 20% of the active users on this forum set up a standing order bid of $1, $29,593.80 would automatically be bid for each and every new community pricing offer! My guess is that almost every new community pricing produce would automatically hit 100%! Users would have the option setting a higher standing order bid as well as overriding their standing order bid and increasing their bid for a particularly expensive product.

Granted this would mean that I might end up with a book I don't care for, but doesn't this already happen when we purchase Base Packages. We are willing to put up with it there because we get such a great discount on the products we really want. This would be doing the same thing.

Keith you are on to something. To get certain resources I desire this sounds workable. If this were to be implemented right now each user would commit to approximately 420.00 dollars.

If they produced 20 each month that equals 240.00 per year. Those who miss the community price would pay more in pre-pub and when it goes live.

I vaguely recall such a dream once voiced here by Bob pritchett. I can't find it, but that's just my weak google foo this morning.

you are talking of "active users" which I think is much less than the near 150k accounts. Some of those "stalled" resources are in the top bestseller ranges, meaning - as Bob once wrote - that virtually everyone who does CP has a bid in them (for more than $1).

From the 'banging the drums' for that Witherington MobileEd-course in the forums and the free CP book, even those nearly inactive users who lurk on the forum will have been introduced to CP.

Moreover, new CP offers go over pretty fast, especially when they're small books that I expect to be somewhat in your range. The stalling CPs are multi-volume dictionaries and large bundles of bibles or commentaries, i.e. expensive to produce.

But I think your idea has merit - but we need to expand it beyond the active forum users. Maybe instead of that ldefault promotion of Bible Study Magazine there could be a default subscription line for a $ .99 CP standing bid in the Checkout screen.

Not a bad idea--I wouldn't mind having the extra resources that you mention except for the Noet stuff. I don't want that mingling in my Logos account.

Anyway, I think you'd have a tough time convincing all of those users to commit to the plan.

Bob Pritchett said $1 per book. That means a 28 volume set would require a $28 bid.

I had bid $2 per volume for most everything in CP for a long time.

Most CP offerings don't have a $1 bid option. The lowest bid can be as high as $40.

I'd assume a '$1 bid program' would have to operate independent of normal bidding (the 80% that didn't participate). Else the $1 bidders would always loose. Or Logos would give away the farm.

But frankly I don't think the math really works. Some people (many forum members) buy to fill out a library. An inexpensive volume can be just what the doctor ordered 15 years from now.

But folks like me purchase to a specific reading requirement (e.g. languages, archaeology, devotional, creedal, etc). In that situation, it's a Las Vegas computation .... how many $1 bids would it take to get a resource you actually want?

And it's easy to calculate. Just go to the CP list, sort by ship (to give it the best chance of a win), and then page down and see how many resources you ACTUALLY want. For me, sometimes I hit the jackpot on 1 or 2 (e.g. the Jerusalem collection, latin dictionary, etc). But most times, I hit the page-button repeatedly. I'd spend more money on $1 bids, than simply bidding on books I like now.

So for me, the $1 standing bid would just kludge up my library with downloads, updates, indexing and dragging/dropping to Hidden.
