I'm confused over highlighting....

I often highlight on my iPad or while studying, I either select text and hit "k" and it highlights or I drag my finger on the iPad.

My intent is to mark things that I find interesting and then return later or whatever.

When I look through my note files I have note files "Solid Colors" "Highlighter Pens" and "Emphasis markup" it seems like I have highlighting in all of them.

My question is, why do I have 3 note files? Did I make them and forget? How do I ensure I have one file for all highlighting?

Kind of confused, any help is appreciated

The file can default to the palette you use unless you previously select a Note file in Settings. On Android, manual highlighting gives me a menu for the highlight style to use and the Note file, so it's important to have Settings correct before using a key shortcut.

One of the developers of this page is Dave Hooten, who has already replied on this thread. There are more advanced wiki pages on highlighting, as well.

One of the first things to realize is that all highlights and notes are recorded in notes files. The highlights are grouped into "palettes". Each palette has a control which allows you to control where the highlighting goes. You get to that control on the Logos 5 desktop by opening the Highlighting pane and hovering over the palette name; e.g., SOLID COLORS. You will note that an arrow will appear at the end of the line with the palette name. Push it and you will get a drop down menu. The last item on the menu gives you control of where the highlights associated with this palette should go.

So you need to learn how to control the individual palettes and then you need to decide how you want to organize your highlighting and notes. If you have just started then you need to consider how you would like to aggregate notes and highlights together. You mentioned one large file. I think you will find that quite cumbersome and not very attractive after a while.

There are some lengthy forum threads where many of the seasoned veterans, like Dave, have discussed personal strategies. Most of the people who bother to control their notes default to creating a single note file per resource and then employing the discipline of dumping their default notes into that file. (Read the wiki's on how to effect the control, but a key element is choosing "Most recent note file" as the target of each individual palette.)

On an iPad, you can control the placement of notes easily by using the selection at the bottom of the note entry pop-up. You can even create a new note file for the resource from this pop-up window. The control of highlights is a little different. As you have suggested highlighting text can be done by dragging your finger over the page. This doesn't give explicit control for placement. However, if you will select the first highlight, then a control will pop up over the highlight and give you an opportunity to edit the "note". From the resulting pop-up you can (1) verify that the highlight was inserted in the desired note file, or (2) allow you to select an alternate note file (which will become "sticky"), or (3) allow you to create a new note file for the topic or resource.

BTW: In order to keep note files differentiated I tend to name default files with <author-last-name>:<resource-title>. Topics get free format named notes files.

[Y][Y] This trick (separate note file per resource) is a HUGE relief to "overly" organized people like me.

It is possible to drag notes from one file to another, but it cannot be done in bulk. Just open each file side by side on your desktop and drag the note from one to the other.

When the first version of the iOS mobile app with highlighting was in beta, I spent ~12 hours doing just this. I would hate to think about how long that would take me now. [:s]

I had to spend a lot of time sorting things out over many weeks, here and there, to get a note file for individual resources. I think I had been highlighting the default way for a couple of years before I started asking questions and got advice from forum posters.

Don't be discouraged. Do a little at a time.
