Installing Logos with a subset of resources

I have purchased a tablet running Windows 8.1 with a total of 64GB storage space, of which there is only 32GB now available.  I want to install Logos but with only a few resources, in order to preserve storage space.

In the past I have installed Logos on multiple computers using the info at:

https://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers

How do I limit the resources installed, and how do I identify from Logos the file names of those resources (assuming I copy over a subset of the files in the resource folder)?

I dont think there is a way to do what you are describing. Many using the full logos program on a windows tablet overcome the space issue by installing  program on an sd card

  • how do I identify from Logos the file names of those resources ?

Resource Support Info (i) includes file name:

For technically inclined, the Catalog and Resource Manager databases have tables that can be joined to create list of Resource Titles and Location that includes file name.

Steve Clark wrote => Logos Library Reporter that uses Catalog database.

Set "Automatically Download Updates" to NO.

Use Method 3 to scan a folder that has subset of desired resources and datasets.

Caveat: Logos datasets are in the Resources folder, but do not appear in Library.  A number of them appear in About:

You might know all of this. Try hiding some resources. First open the settings in a tab in Logos 5 or Verbum 5 on Your desktop or laptop computer. Then right-click on the library-button and open Your library in a tab. Now, with the mouse, put the resources You want to hide, in the list at the bottom of the settings tab (first You have to expand that list to show all). This will remove the books from all of Your devices.

    John,

Look into purchasing a 64GB Class 10 microSD card. You can install Logos and all of your resources on the microSD.

I'd do it differently. Since Logos does support bulk hiding (but not bulk restore) and sorting names to the books can become very tedious, I'd do a method 2 install on a different user on the big 'real machine' (assuming you have one), turn internet off for that install, hide the "fluff" from the library (you probably want to remove audio/video resources and media including monographs with a high number of graphic illustrations) and rebuild indexes. When this installation is small enough, I'd use it as the basis for a method 2 install on the tablet.

Note: That's how I would do it, but I haven't tested and there's no guarantee.

I think Bill has it right .... assuming it's possible?  The minute someone wants a new book to read on their L5 tablet, all bets are off.  Repeat the whole process?

The minute someone wants a new book to read on their L5 tablet, all bets are off.

If "Use Internet" is set to YES, then resource license(s) for new book(s) would sync to L5 tablet.  If "Automatically Download Updates" is NO, then alert message would appear about ### GB (or MB or KB) to download for unhidden licensed resources that are not on L5 tablet; be careful to not start downloading of all "missing" resources if do not have adequate space for them.  Can copy desired new resource(s) to a folder, then scan on L5 tablet to discover them, copy, and index.

If "Use Internet" is set to NO, licenses can be copied from one of your L5 installation(s) with "Use Internet" set to Yes.  After licenses are updated, can use scan command to discover licensed resource(s), copy, and index. Sadly aware of technically astute thieves who have exploited copying of licenses for offline use.

Personally have copied Logos license files on my own computers, followed by launching Logos or Verbum offline and using scan command to discover, copy, and index lots of resources while avoiding many hours to download new resources again.  After indexing completed, then have used my Logos and Verbum installations online.

Look into purchasing a 64GB Class 10 microSD card. You can install Logos and all of your urces on the microSD.

Prudent to check Logos folder size before purchasing.  My Library index is 11.8 GB, resources folder is 40.9 GB, and total folder uses 57.6 GB so 64 GB would allow an installation copy to be made.  To reindex library, would need to delete Library index since do not have enough space for two copies when indexes are being merged.  Potentially could use junction for Resources folder so all the other Logos files are on internal SSD while resource files are on microSD card.

Wikipedia Secure Digital article => https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital#Speed_class_rating notes Class 10 transfer speed is 10 MB/s, which is significantly slower than 550 MB/s for newer SATA III SSD => http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-OCZ-Vertex-3-250-GB-Solid-State-Drive-SSD-SATA-3.51107.0.html

Hence, microSD has capacity to hold all Logos files with noticeably slower responsiveness. Also experienced an Intel Atom Z670 CPU @ 1.5 GHz with 128 GB SSD lacking processor speed.  Dell Latitude ST Tablet is usable when willing to click and wait seconds.

If John's tablet has the current BayTrail Atom processor, I can personally vouch that installing to microSD runs very acceptably. Not so acceptably if it is last year's Atom.

Thanks so much to everyone for all your helpful (and extremely timely!) advice.  I think I'll try Bill's approach first, as I reckon it will be easier to keep updated - my tablet has a Bay Trail-T Quad Core Processor, so hopefully response will be adequate.  I'm really impressed with this forum!  Blessings on you all!

My 64GB microSD card has just arrived and I've begun the installation - seems the custom installation will let me put the destination folder anywhere on the C drive but it doesn't recognise any other drive even though Windows explorer is recognising the card OK.  Any ideas from here?  Can I install in a folder on the C drive then copy that folder to the microSD?  I presume not?  Sorry to be so dumb about these things!

Custom installation should allow you to navigate to that drive in a similar manner to Explorer. What drive letter is showing in Explorer? How much free space is listed?

    Hi Dave

It's showing in Windows Explorer as drive D and its a 64GB drive - I've been able to successfully copy other files to it.  I'm running windows 8.1, if that's relevant.

More specifically, Dave, it's a new card and there's nothing on it as yet - I purchased it just for Logos.

Ah! .... I didn't rely on the installer to find the drive, but overwrote the C;\ option that it gave me with D:\ and it seems to have worked OK!!  Now to see if I can copy over my resources!  Getting there!!

Success!  What's more I didn't need to do the backup stage of Method 2 as I have a common homegroup and was able to copy over the three relevant folders!  Thanks again, everyone, for your help.

Thanks, Dave, for your question which prompted me to overwrite the options offered b y the installer.
