Base Package Acquisition Philosophy

I had Platinum in Logos 4 and then again in Logos 5, and now have upgraded to Gold in Logos 6. I also have added a lot of other resources over the years.

Here's my thinking for the coming year. In an effort to round out my collection, I am considering purchasing all of the denominational Starter Packages, one at a time over the next year. They all end up being less than $100 and I expect that as I add them, the dynamic pricing will drop that even lower, and I will end up with basics from many denominational perspectives.

Rather than go Starter in each see what is in the higher levels, as these may still be very affordable and as you say after a few the price should fall quickly anyway.

The only package that cost me more that I expected this year was the Roman one, but that is to expected as the contents is so different to the protestant packages (well as not keeping up on prepubs, which incidentally saved me a fortune).

Buy them all in the January (or whatever) sale perhaps a bit of delayed gratification might allow you to buy even more stuff.

My upgrade path has been relatively similar.

I started with Logos 2 level 3 though, and for some of the denominations it was relatively inexpensive (under 20$) for me to get one of the larger packages.

If I get the Basic Verbum, will it just add the resources into my Logos 6 installation? Is there a compelling reason to actually install the Verbum package itself?

Yes, and no.

Yes it will put the resources in L6, and no, the verbum installation doesn't add much for the protestant. Its mostly a re-branding as I understand it with a difference that was minor enough for my purposes that I don't remember it (Though some certainly feel its important).

I started with an L3 Libronix Leaders package.

My Acquisition Philosophy WAS upgrade with a package jump. Leaders to Silver. Silver to Gold. Gold to Platinum.

With L5 I started to realize that I wasn't really accessing the greater percentage of resources I had gotten from my package upgrade purchases.

So I made the commitment to just do specialized purchases going forward. The crossgrades and the bundles have made this really feasable for me.

I have found that you can often buy a package upgrade for the same price that just two or three (perhaps even one) specialised purchases that were included in the base packages anyway.

Indeed.

I go through and find the items that I need. Then I figure out how much they would cost on their own. If thats more expensive than the base package, I get the base package. If not, I get the individual resources.

I can't think of a time when the BP wasn't cheaper.

Don't neglect the bundles. They're an equally good way of rounding out your collection, and they're much better value this year than they have been in the past.

The based packages have three or two years cycles. Have anyone see a pattern of how often the bundles change? This would help me get the bundles before they change again. Thank you in advance.

They had a new batch with the release of 5, an upgraded batch after a year, and then now another new set with the release of 6.

Its reasonable to think they will continue to do the same for the next couple years; updating them on a 12 month cycle.

Thanks abondservant for a quick response. I have another question to anyone reading this. I notice that by purchasing a base package, the price of the bundles go down. Is the price of a same book in based package cheaper than in the bundle, approximately how much cheaper in percentage? I am trying to figure out if I should get another base package next or the bundles next. Thanks again in advance.

Base packages give a pretty consistent 90% discount, regardless of size (except cross grades). Bundles give 70-80%, depending on size.

I'd like to give Logos 6 a try. I have a quite extenisve library, but no base package, since I haven't found the items on those packages worth the price. Can I update to Logos 6 by buying a bundle package (without base package)? Am I missing some core features of Logos 6 if I decide to do this?

P.S. Yours screenshots on top products in 2012 saved me lot of money because I have the Portfolio at that time. That was when I learned the about the Portfolio Advantage. Thank you. [:)]
