Logos was downloading updates to resources on both of our phones and my tablet. using up almost all of our monthly data.
Perhaps under Settings, we could have an option for "Update via WiFi only"? I have several apps that give that option.
To be honest, this massive update was the first time it has even been an issue for me, and I did go looking for such an option. In the end, I turned off Mobile Data completely, until I had finished the download via WiFi.
I'm on the iOS side, but I had the same issue until I turned off my L5 library mobile selections. That might not be a workable solution for a large choice of resources; I keep all my Logos apps 'thin' ... an eReader.
The suggestion of WIFI vs cellular, not sure how workable since we use a hotspot (cellular) to ship WIFI to the mobiles. I still think courtesy is not a major interest at Logos, whether forcing gigs to a desktop or almost-gigs to a cellular.
None of my apps or desktop programs have ever been as badly designed in this area, as Logos. And it's surprising, given we're talking mobiles. This week ATT upped their gigs ,though they're still behind Verizon.
The app should only initiate downloads automatically on wi-fi as per https://community.logos.com/forums/p/74253/518503.aspx#518503
I wonder if something has changed - it would be good to get someone from Faithlife to comment on this
I use my cell phone as a WiFi hot spot for my tablet at church,, so the WiFi only option would not solve the problem.
At least we've clarified the issue[:)]
And your scenario seems to be the same as Denise's.
It is very disrespectful and bad programming to ignore the "do not auto - update apps" setting in the Google Play Store
It would be interesting to know if the intention of that setting relates to apps themselves or the resources used by them. I don't know if that is an intended distinction.

Apps on Android don't have access to that Google Play setting. The setting is specific to the Google Play Store app.
So, can we conclude Harry's using a Logos mobile app and can wipe out his cellular budget in a single sermon, and that's that? Wow.
Sorry everyone, I didn't mean to create so much confusion. I was just trying to give some extra information that anything the Logos apps do is unrelated to the setting in Google Play.
The only time that automatic downloads occur on iOS is when you reinstall the app--it will redownload everything that was previously downloaded, but it only does that when connected to WIFI. I'm surprised Android doesn't work the same.

Android does work the same as iOS, just as you describe.
So the Android app auto-updates? I'm under the impression the the iOS app does not. It tells you what updates are available, but you have to initiate any downloads manually by clicking the Update All button on the Update screen. Seems like both apps should do the same thing. (I'm open to being corrected if I'm wrong about the iOS app.)
You're correct about how the apps work, except if you're on wifi, downloads/updates will begin automatically. This is the same on Android and iOS. The problem (as has been discussed with Denise in the past in a thread I don't have time to find right now) is when users create a wifi hotspot using their cellular connection (like Harry describes above), the app thinks it is on wifi and starts the downloads automatically. There is no way (on Android at least) to tell the difference between "fake" and "real" wifi.
For what it's worth, I completely agree that the app should at minimum include the option for downloads to never start automatically. That was not my call, and I'd love to see it changed - but I won't be the one to make the change, because I left the Logos Mobile team in September. (So obviously any opinions stated are my own and not that of Logos/Faithlife)
because I left the Logos Mobile team in September.
I don't approve of that! Get back to work! You've been a great face for Logos, helping users on the forums, tracking down problems. And you helped to work on some of the biggest improvements I've seen on mobile. A lot of great work. Very sorry to hear that you've left the team.
Thanks Randy. It was a tough decision...I really enjoyed my time on the Logos mobile team (as you can probably tell by the fact that I'm still on the forums...)
