Anyone have any suggestions on where to get an economic SSD?
Crucial or Amazon.
I have bought SSD's from both and have been thrilled with them.

I've been happy with the Crucial m500; I'd recommend Intel if you can afford to.
Be aware Black Friday and Cyber Monday are right around the corner. There is a subreddit on Reddit, buildapcsales, if you familiar with the site. I highly recommend keeping tabs on the deals they keep track of, you can snag a good brand at 1/2 price, as I did on my Crucial. They usually have historical price tracking so you can know how good the deal is.
I have a Samsung 840 pro 256 GB. They are about $160 on Amazon. It is a mighty fine drive. Picked it up new on eBay for $110 ... including shipping.
Shop around. The prices are coming down. [:D]
I have Logos on a Liteonit LAT-256M3S 256GB SSD in an Asus laptop and have been very happy. It has been through mountains and deserts and jungles, has been beaten and dropped and monsooned on (my own term) and in blowing dust for 10's of thousands of miles around various countries. It is a cross between the energizer bunny and the Children's of Israel shoes.
Children's of Israel? It's surely not Children of Israel's? How do you say that?
Anyway I am happy with the SSD.
Amazon. Samsung 840 Pro, which is what I have, or the Evo. I think the 850 is out now, too.

As was said Black Friday and Cyber Monday are only weeks away. Last year Newegg had some great deals.
The Crucial MX100 series is said to be a great buy and probably what I'll pick up. Price per GB is better than Samsung's Evo and it's fast.
Oh trust me I definitely plan on waiting for black Friday. [:D]
OK. I am in this boat too. If anyone finds steals on Black Friday or Cyber Monday, feel free to share here! [:)]

Well now that means you and I will just have to keep posting here heading into the sale season to make sure it stays near the top! [;)]
This is a great choice 500Gb for only $239.00 http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7TE500BW/dp/B00E3W19MO/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1411135144&sr=1-2&keywords=samsung+840+evo and its one of the best SSD's
Is an SSD a drive to connect externally or does it need to be installed inside?
If You would install it externally it would be important that You connect it to the USB 3.0 port. Not 2.0:
512GB Crucial MX100 at newgg and amazon for historical low price of $199 right now (11/7/14) rated well.
Here is the Crucial M500 240GB for $99.
Here is the Corsair 256GB for $115; I've not personal experience with the brand, but have heard happiness with it. There is a $30 mail-in-rebate you can get if you purchase before 11/8, link below add to cart. ($85.99)
all are sata3, the Crucials would have built in hardware encryption that some flavors of Windows OS can utilize through Bitlocker if that matters to anyone.
