Alliterated Resources for Logos

Hi Logos scholars,

I'm searching for alliterated resources. I know that I can search Logos for "alliterated" resources, but that often does not yield accucate result. I'm wondering if you would reply here and let me know of any resources whatsoever that are alliterated.

I am aware of the John Butler works, and the Mattoon works that on the way, as well as the Wilmington products, Cantrell products, and the Preach for a Year product.

Beyond that, what else is there that can be purchased in Logos?

Alliteration is where the author makes sermon points rhyme or sound alike in some creative way. Here's an example from John' Butler's sermonettes book:

Wise Men

“And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him; and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.” (Matthew 2:11)

THE Magi who came to visit the Christ child are often called “wise men.” It is a fitting name, for they were indeed wise men in their worship. Our verse speaks of the place of their worship, the person of their worship, the prostration in their worship, and the price of their worship.

Place of their worship. “When they were come into the house, they saw the young child.” The Magi worshiped where Christ was loved and honored. Christ is not loved and honored in all churches. You will have trouble worshiping if you are not in a place where Christ is loved and honored.

Person of their worship. “Worshiped him.” The Magi worshiped Jesus Christ. It is very instructive that they did not worship Mary though she was right there. Worshiping Mary is Roman Catholicism. Furthermore, they did not worship Joseph. That is the practice of cults. They are always honoring some man above Christ. The Bible never teaches us to worship anyone but Deity.

Prostration in their worship. “Fell down and worshiped him.” Prostration involves at least two important things. First, it involves humility. The only way we can stand before God is on our knees in humble adoration. Second, it involves honor. You honor the person before whom you bow. If we do not worship, we will not honor God. Skipping worship on Sundays dishonors God.

Price of their worship. These magi “opened their treasures, they presented unto him.” Worship involves giving. And the better the gift the better the worship. These magi gave to Christ of their treasures. They gave the best they had. They were not stingy, but generous. True worship has a high price. It will honor the offering plate. True worshipers will give liberally and enthusiastically. You will not have to beg and plead with true worshipers to give.

I just didn't know what an alliteration resource was. I guess it's just a resource in which the author puts down main points by alliteration. Is that right?

I've noticed some other works like these in my library from time to time, but I confess I have not noted them down as particularly interesting (I find that alliteration approach too gimmicky/forced and usually shallow), so I cannot remember them again right now without perusing through everything in my library. Sorry.

I like that quote.

To me, alliteration is completely dependent on how much cheese is used. There is cheesy alliteration, and there is artistic alliteration. The former is something you'd expect to hear on an episode of Duck Dynasty. The latter is something you'd expect to hear in a proper Scottish accent and screams that it was written by a person more intelligent than you or I.

If your best alliteration goes well with nachos, I think you are much better off leaving it alone. If you can pull off the latter, regardless of your accent, then go for it. It really does work as a memory aid, and good alliteration, as HWR would say, never alters the foot to fit the shoe.

The Puritans were known to use alliteration. This is from Spurgeon's Sermons, Volume 17:

Lancelot Andrewes was another example of a Puritan who used alliteration:

J.I. Packer explains the reason the Puritans liked alliteration in A Quest for Godliness. It was to make the sermons more memorable.

Packer, who was deeply influenced by the Puritans, uses alliteration quite a bit himself. I took systematic theology with him at Regent College, and his class outlines were full of it. Here's one example in a Vyrso book of his, Rediscovering Holiness:

Augustine was apparently also known for using it:

David Hocking is apparently another author who uses it, though Logos doesn't seem to carry his books.

So perhaps I was too dismissive of alliteration. It can certainly be cheesy, but in the right hands it can help make the content sink in better. It just shouldn't be forced for the sake of the alliteration, IMO. Packer is quite skilled at doing it in a way that doesn't seem forced. That book of his I mentioned has many other examples of it. Here's a lengthier self-conscious use of alliteration in Rediscovering Holiness:

Repenting in the full sense of the word—actually changing in the way described—is only possible for Christians, believers who have been set free from sin’s dominion and made alive to God. Repenting in this sense is a fruit of faith, and as such a gift of God (cf. Acts 11:18). The process can be alliteratively analyzed under the following headings:

1. Realistic recognition that one has disobeyed and failed God, doing wrong instead of doing right. This sounds easier than it actually is. T. S. Eliot spoke the truth when he observed: “Humankind cannot bear very much reality.” There is nothing like a shadowy sense of guilt in the heart to make us passionately play the game of pretending something never happened, or rationalizing to ourselves action that was morally flawed. So, after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba and compounded it with murder, he evidently told himself that it was simply a matter of royal prerogative and, therefore, nothing to do with his spiritual life. So he put it out of his mind, until Nathan’s “You are the man!” (2 Sam. 12:7) made him realize, at last, that he had offended God. This awareness was, and is, the seed bed where repentance grows. It does not grow elsewhere. True repentance only begins when one passes out of what the Bible sees as self-deception (see Jas. 1:22,26; 1 John 1:8) and modern counselors call denial; into what the Bible calls conviction of sin (see John 16:8).

2. Regretful remorse at the dishonor one has done to the God one is learning to love and wanting to serve. This is the mark of the contrite heart (see Ps. 51:17; Isa. 57:15). The Middle Ages drew a useful distinction between attrition and contrition (regret for sin prompted by fear for oneself and by love for God respectively; the latter leading to true repentance while the former fails to do so). The believer feels, not just attrition, but contrition, as did David (see Ps. 51:1-4,15-17). Contrite remorse, springing from the sense of having outraged God’s goodness and love, is pictured and modeled in Jesus’ story of the prodigal’s return to his father (Luke 15:17-20).

3. Reverent requesting of God’s pardon, cleansing of conscience, and help to not lapse in the same way again. A classic example of such requesting appears in David’s prayer of penitence (see Ps. 51:7-12). The repentance of believers always, and necessarily, includes the exercise of faith in God for these restorative blessings. Jesus Himself teaches God’s children to pray “forgive us our sins . . . and lead us not into temptation” (Luke 11:4).

4. Resolute renunciation of the sins in question, with deliberate thought as to how to keep clear of them and live right for the future. When John the Baptist told Israel’s official religious elite: “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance” (Matt. 3:8), he was calling on them to change direction in this way.

5. Requisite restitution to any who have suffered material loss through one’s wrongdoing. Restitution in these circumstances was required by the Old Testament law. When Zacchaeus, the renegade Jewish taxman, became Jesus’ disciple, he committed himself to make fourfold retribution for each act of extortion, apparently on the model of Moses’ requirement of four sheep for every one stolen and disposed of (Exod. 22:1; cf. Exod. 22:2-14; Lev. 6:4; Num. 5:7).

An alternative alliteration (as if one were not enough!) would be:

1. discerning the perversity, folly, and guilt of what one has done;

2. desiring to find forgiveness, abandon the sin, and live a God-pleasing life from now on;

3. deciding to ask for forgiveness and power to change;

4. dealing with God accordingly;

5. demonstrating, whether by testimony and confession or by changed behavior or by both together, that one has left one’s sin behind.

Such is the repentance—not just the initial repentance of the adult convert, but the recurring repentance of the adult disciple—that is our present theme.

Although I don't invest much effort in alliterating consecutive points for fear of twisting the meaning to fit my message, I am impressed with alliteration that illuminates and aids memory. So very much of what the preacher/teacher labors over simply floats away into the atmosphere and the average listener (including myself) rarely retains much, if any, of it by the following Tuesday... and alliteration remedies that to some degree.

Along this line of reasoning, I'd have to disagree with the brother who wanted to place a limitation on the Cheese Factor of alliteration. I am of the opinion (alas, without a single Barna Survey to support my opinion) that the cheesier the better. A humorous alliteration slathered in a generous wrapper of cheesy goodness will naturally "stick" in my brain.

It may stick in your brain, but does it do any good there? Is it any better than the cutesy advertising jingle that sticks in your brain?

The thing which makes some sermons very memorable at my church is that we have a wide variety of preachers and preaching styles. In any given year we probably have messages from 40 different people, half of them members of our congregation and half are outside speakers. And a good number of them are people we've never heard speak before, and occasionally even first-time preachers who are seminary students. The advantage to this approach is that a single sermon, though it might not be excellent and polished, will stand out in our minds because of how different it is from all the others. When you hear sermons from the same person week after week, no matter how clever they are at crafting mnemonic devices for delivery, sooner or later they're all going to blend together. We have had quite a number of individual sermons at our church that I still remember YEARS later, and most of them people are still talking about at least the following week, if not longer. And the content is good quality stuff too, not Velveeta.

Your question made me curious so I looked around a bit. Here are some I came up with:

A few volumes from the Opening Up series are alliterative: Exodus, Ecclesiastes, Matthew, Galatians, 2 Thessalonians, and Hebrews.

That's about it other than the ones you have mentioned.

I thought I'd bring this thread back up with the announcement of the Baker Sermon Outline Collection. It is a mine of old-style alliterative outlines from the likes of Croft Pentz and Billy Apostolon. I cannot vouch for all the authors and whether they all use alliteration, but Pentz did and IIRC Apostolon did and they make up the lion's share of the series and both alliterate.

For those who enjoy this style of preaching outline it should be well worth the asking price of $39.99 to have this many new resources to explore.
