Using Android emulator while waiting for upgraded Metro App

While the metro app Bible! is fine for light reading, I often grab my Android tablet for studying. But I recently came across a work around that allows me to use my Windows tablet (Dell Venue 8 Pro) so I thought I'd share in case it is useful for anyone.

At www.amiduos.com you can download DuOS and install on any Windows 8 machine. It is a bit slow to load, but once it does I can run the Logos Android Bible App and it is as quick and smooth as my Android tablet. The app is free to try and $10 to buy. I also tried BlueStacks but was not able to get that to work well with my Dell but YMMV. Also, I found BlueStacks much slower than DuOS.

One fix I had to do was to edit the config file on Duos because my Dell has less than 3 gigs of RAM. You can link to the fix here: http://amiduos.com/support/knowledge-base/article/why-duos-is-not-launching-in-full-screen-mode-on-my-pc.

To Logos: I join the others on the forum that would be happy to pay for a more fully featured Bible! app, especially one that works across Windows 8, RT and Windows Phone. Hopefully Windows 10 will be the platform that will provide you enough users to justify the investment.

If you want to take this approach, I'd recommend Genymotion, which is free for personal use and works amazingly well.

Drew - Free is good so I tried out Genymotion. While it looks like a good app I can say that it won't work for those of us with Atom Bay Trail tablets. It ran unusably slow and pegged the CPUs. Any other Android emulators I should check out?

Not that I know of, sorry. I do most of my Android work on a Macbook Pro and I haven't tried any of the Atom Bay Trail tablets.

Hi John, I'm thinking about picking up one of the new HP Stream 8 tablets which also has the Intel Atom/Bay Trail CPU w/ 1 GB RAM... so I think it should be comparable to the Dell Venue. Just curious are you able to actually run the full version of Logos on your Venue? I'm thinking this would be an awful experience but I'm wondering that if it is technically possible if you really needed to access notes, etc. Thanks and God bless!

Hi Jason, I have not used one of the Stream tablets yet but I would not recommend it for running Logos in the desktop except for special use cases. On my Venue 8 Pro I have 2 GB of memory, 32GB eMMC drive and a 32GB micro SD card. While Logos is fully usable with 2 resources open it can sometimes get slow. I believe the issue is the RAM or the eMMC drive - but I have not had time to do any testing. If you do buy a Bay Trail device I would make sure you have 2-4 GB RAM and at least a 64 GB drive. Windows, Logos, and Office will not fit on a 32GB drive...at least not with reasonable space left over. Once vendors start putting normal 64 GB SSDs (not eMMC) and 4 GB RAM with the BayTrail platform it will be plenty for Logos.

For my use though, the Venue has been great. I teach each Sunday and use the WiDi (wireless display) to connect to a projector. So on a normal podium I have the Venue, a Bluetooth keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse. I can face my audience and talk seeing everything on the tablet that they are seeing on the screen. The performance of Logos is fine in this context as I am clicking on PowerPoint links to Logos references. Before class I open all the references so Logos is good to go.

So, I guess it depends how you want to use it on whether a BayTrail will work for you. But the HP Stream devices are limited to 1 GB RAM and 32GB drive so I would go with another vendor/line to get more of both.
