Text to Speach

I was wondering if text-to-speech is still on the plan for the android app. I would love to be able to listen to the content I have bought while driving through my android app on my phone.  I had talked to my sales rep over a year ago and they said it was in the works. I would imagine it would be really easy to tap into the android....

Dear Logos Android Developers,

http://www.tutorialspoint.com/android/android_text_to_speech.htm

Here is a tutorial on how to read text to speech in under 100 lines of code. It should be pretty simple to add this to the app! I would be so happy and buy many more books if I could listen to them on my hour driving commute.

Unfortunately it's not as simple as that tutorial makes it out to be. Logos resources contain much more than just plain text data. You can check out this thread for some more information: https://community.logos.com/forums/p/41565/383921.aspx

That being said, I'd love to see Faithlife implement this, I think it'd be an awesome feature! I looked into adding the feature in my spare time while I was working at Faithlife, but it ended up being too big a project to implement without it being officially sanctioned.

    Quotes:

    • "it ended up being too big a project to implement without it being officially sanctioned."
    • "This is completed on iOS 7 devices, but not yet on Android devices." (see link below for this quote)

    Questions:

    • What is the estimate (or goal) for releasing this feature?
    • What would it take to either get this feature "officially sanctioned" and raised to a "high priority" (if the ETA is much further off than it it would otherwise be)

    Suggestions:

    • Place this feature as a product on community pricing, along with the details of what it would take (WIGT).  Let us users show you how important it is to us (This is feature may not be a priority for all users, but it may be sufficiently vital to select users [like me] to cover necessary costs.)
    • Work with publishers to enable TTS for all books for those users who can verify that they have a "print disability" (Blind, Low Vision, Dyslexia).  This could be modeled after the registration process for "www.learningally.org".  Enabling this feature would both increase Logo's accessibility and, possibly, qualify Logos to apply for a grant to help underwrite the production of this feature. (Also, by adding this "accessibility" feature, users who would enjoy this feature, but would not pay "to have it", might pay "to have it made" ...if they could think of it as donating to charity [minus the tax benefit].)

As a rule, Faithlife doesn’t give out ETA’s for new features.  As far as I understand text to speech is not on the list of things we're planning to do in the near future.
