It may be useful to help users make a habit of comparing Bible verses across the spectrum of translation theories. I.e.:
- A formal/literal translation (say, NASB95)
- A functional/dynamic translation (say, NIV / NET)
- A free translation (say, NLT)
Note that one with more precise needs may wish for something more detailed:
- A very formal/literal translation (say, KJV)
- A formal/literal translation (say, ESV)
- A functional/dynamic translation (say, NIV / NET)
- A very functional/dynamic translation (say, GNB)
- A free translation (say, NLT)
- A very free translation (say, The Message)
This kind of emphasis might require quite a pervasive feature planning. I suppose we wouldn't see this before Logos 7, 8, or even 9. A few examples:
- If I'm reading in a pane where a formal translation is shown, then show me as parallels first the other formals, then, with a labeled separator, functional translations.
- In the Text Comparison tool, group the translations by theory. Let us expand/collapse all our favorite formal translations, etc. Better: let us expand our favorite formal translation (say, ESV) into our top 3 favorite formal translations, and then let us collapse it back to our favorite one (ESV). Better: let us collapse this group back to the one we found the most useful for this passage, and persist that information! (And then I proceed to expand my top 3 functional translations, to collapse them back to the most useful one, or maybe just hide one of them because they're all useful except that one...)
- From the Home Screen for people with wide screens, hitting Go on a passage may bring a 4-pane view where the left-most pane is still the guides, but the 3 next panes are for 3 bibles of different translations. Etc.
- You see the point.
I know we can achieve some of this with Collections.
Well, have fun thinking about this suggestion. Something along those lines would certainly help me, but I must admit I'm already quite well served with Logos. Thanks!
PS: I didn't post on UserVoice because all my votes are spent and it's too stressful to have to review my votes to remove one of them before I can write a suggestion there.
