New Feature: Label Entry
What is it?
Label Entry makes note-taking, sharing, and searching your findings simpler than ever. Spend less time digging through old notes trying to find that spark of insight from last weekend—instead, find and organize your thoughts in minutes.
How does it work?
With Label Entry, you can add searchable labels to resources for easy recollection. Create custom labels, like “narrative,” “prayer,” and “prophecy,” then group your notes under these categories. Label Entry offers an easy way to catalog your findings and share them with your class, study group, or church.
For example, add a Label to every command in the New Testament Epistles, specifying the type of command being used, the issuer of the command, and the recipient(s). Now, you can search specific types of commands directed at certain individuals or groups.
How do I get it?
Label Entry is available in Core Crossgrade and Starter-level base packages and higher.

I played around with the Label feature yesterday. It is great for things like Quotes and Illustrations - superior to Clippings which used to be my strategy in the past.
That being said, I had a few questions:
1) The searching on labels seem to be hit and miss, probably in the immediate timeperiod after you have tagged a selection. For example, I tagged three Quotes in a Spurgeon sermon, and search results for {Labels Quote} returned only 2x, with only one being displayed in the search window itself. Is this an indexing issue?
2) The addition of attributes is a bit cumbersome since if you forget to hit Save, you will lose any attributes you might have added if you accidently close the Window OR the software crashes (this happened to me yesterday). Moreover, typing in some specific Attribute Names seemed to autoselect a Value Type.
3) Related to the above, once I added and saved a few attributes, I was unable to change the Value Type. I deleted any existing annotation, and it still did not allow me to change the type. I ended up deleting the attribute and re-adding it.
4) Is it necessary to have a default value for prompted attributes?
5) Will some of Logos' own labels be made available to us as a palette perhaps? I am excited about the future of this functionality. (As an aside, here is an interesting article about Google's use of structured data, including the concept of inherent attributes based on type http://www.theverge.com/2014/10/28/7083293/google-knowledge-graph-knows-when-your-goat-will-die )

Geo,
I'll answer what I can… I'll have to defer to Bradley on searching.
2) The addition of attributes is a bit cumbersome since if you forget to hit Save, you will lose any attributes you might have added if you accidently close the Window OR the software crashes (this happened to me yesterday). Moreover, typing in some specific Attribute Names seemed to autoselect a Value Type.
I think this is due to the general design of the Highlighting tool which hasn't changed (much) since Logos 4. Although we don't generally have explicit "Save" buttons in the app, I think it would be confusing if the Label section did autosave, but other sections required an explicit save.
As for why the Attribute Names seem to autoselect a value type, we tried to make creating new labels easier, and to that end, if you created a Label called "Speaker" and associated it with the Biblical Person type, then we try to reuse that when you next choose "Speaker" as an Attribute Name. In other words, if you select an attribute name that has previously been created, that attributes value type will be selected by default.
3) Related to the above, once I added and saved a few attributes, I was unable to change the Value Type. I deleted any existing annotation, and it still did not allow me to change the type. I ended up deleting the attribute and re-adding it.
Was this in the Highlighting panel (i.e. editing a Label Template) or in the Label Editor popup window (i.e. editing a Label instance)? If it was in the Highlighting panel, you should be able to simply delete the attribute and re-add it with the correct type. Deleting and re-adding the attribute name in the Label Template in the Highlighting panel will not change any existing attributes on existing Label instances.
Label templates are used as initial snapshots of the label attributes and values at the time the highlighting style is applied. Changing a template after it's applied in a resource does not affect the previous label highlight instances. Similarly, changing a specific label instance in the popup editor does not affect the label template in the Highlighting panel.
4) Is it necessary to have a default value for prompted attributes?
No. If you don't supply a default attribute, then you are free to fill in any value that corresponds to the template type. If you select "Any Value Type" then when the label is created, it will attempt to set the attribute type based on the value you choose from the autocomplete list.
I don't know if we have plans to supply some of our own styles… But it's an interesting suggestion.

User-added Labels are searchable immediately. Can you provide more details or screenshots?
({Labels Quote} is incorrect search syntax for starters.)

Anyone else experience the same with Labels?

There does seem to be some kind of problem with this. We are doing some more investigating.

This is probably simple, but I cannot find this feature. I don't see the option in highlighting....any help for a "challenged" user?

You need to edit one of you custom styles (or create a new style). The built in styles can not be edited.

Me? You don't want ones I'd make. They'd be terrible! I'll send a request over to our people that make training videos. I can't make any promises if or when they will get to it.

Screenshots below: I have two screenshots since I could not get the font size small enough to show all three instances on the same page. You will notice the first one is not highlighted by sympathetic highlighting either.
This bug will be fixed in SR-4.

Are there plans to have the label's highlighter pallet text effects transfer to added attachment points in the highlighter note?

The parent's style and Label attributes are not transferred to the attachment point. Any search for the highlighting style or Label will not include the attachment points. Why are you just asking about "Text effects"?

I am just starting to learn a few features of the software, and I was curious as how to best mark up parallel passages or ideas I come across in scripture. I thought creating a label and adding attachment points to all of the parallels would be the best option, but now that I see the parent style doesn't transfer I'm not sure. Is this something they are working on? Are there ways around this? Thanks!

It seems logical that this would happen in a "future" release, and the potential difficulty is that existing users who highlight/annotate extensively have already annotated their attachment points. So is it left alone or does the parent highlighting style or label get imposed? Either way, I think a search should pick up the attachment points.

Andrew,

Yes, I would very much like to understand this feature. However, I seem to be a bit challenged. I have never really used tagging, labeling, etc. (if they are even the same thing or similar). I do not understand the purpose of "attribute name", "value type", "default value", etc. Can these things be explained and maybe a few examples of how they would be used?
Thanks for any help.
Michael
EDIT: I did watch that video but cannot see the value or its use very clearly. After investing in it, what is the return? How can this be useful.

Thanks, that really helps.
In the video, the "Labels" pallet had several labels. I wonder if that person, or others, would mind sharing the parameters of the labels they have created to help spur my own lack of imagination and forward thinking on this?
Also, I must say that the search seems a bit intimidating to remember all those operators.

Here is a more recent video from our YouTube channel:
Andrew, the Labels item under All Bible Text in your search is misleading** because:-
- users will be looking for a Labels item as automatically defined; not realising it is a Palette name and that you include your labels that way, whereas a Label can be added to any existing palette/style;
- you describe selecting the style as selecting the label; and
- it isn't necessary because the {Label} search functions just as well with "All Bible Text" (or "All Text" in a Basic search)
Users should understand that you don't have to create a Palette/style to use Labels. Further, the same label can be added to any Highlight style in the Notes file, so that is probably the only time that restricting the search to a (label) style as you illustrate would be useful.
** I initially thought you were showing a new feature of the {Label} search, particularly when you didn't start with the curly braces!

It is intimidating and remembering is another thing! Hopefully, the search help I added for Logos 6 will be useful to you.

I have labeled a few of my notes, but the Label section in the highlighting palette does not appear.
Also, is there anywhere that explains what "Attribute" and "value" are supposed to mean?
Beyond this forum post, I can't seem to find much info on this feature...

Here is the best explanation I have found so far: https://community.logos.com/forums/p/93205/647728.aspx#647728

How can I add a visible Label to a Bible reference?
I create Labels in the highlighting palettes. But those cannot be applied to a Bible reference. But I can attach a note to a reference and then add a label, but those labels don't show up?!?!?!
I'd like to label references so they show up across translations.
