Deleting redundant layouts

Is there any way to delete redundant layouts? With L6 opened to the "layouts" window I have more than several "Genesis" layouts.

Do I have to manually delete each and every old layout except for my most recent update on my Genesis layout or can I delete the older layouts in one stroke?

As far as I know, you have to delete them manually. However, I wonder how this situation happened in the first place? Normally, you can update your existing laying by clicking on the arrow next to it and selecting "update to current snapshot". So there should not be an accumulation of layouts that are variants of the same...

The 'layout situation' remains in limbo from November 2009. Each time I press the 'Update active layout' button (command), it creates another instance in the layout pile. Plus whenever I close the app, it creates another instance. Then in a fit of pique, it stacks the closed ones above the saved ones (making sure the dates are all mixed up).

Plus as I understand it, Logos6 still has the ticking layout bomb, where if you delete one of the active layouts that are stored all with the same name (which one did you say?), it'll delete the active layout. You should guess carefully.

A while back, I deleted all mine. I notice now, they're back. Goodness, is that a relief! These little puppies won't die! I'm not trying really hard to be snarky, but I do try to imagine a programming class at the junior college in Bellingham.

Just to make sure we're on the same page: do you mean a desktop version or an app like IOS or Android?

You have to delete them manually ... but be careful ... the first instance that you find in the list is the latest version ... do not delete it ... all others below that can be deleted.

The list on the left hand side does not contain layouts, only shortcuts to the uppermost layout on the RHS ... if you delete all instances on the right hand side then the left hand side shortcut simply disappears. There is no warning that you are about to delete the last known example of your layout.

I discovered that, under L5, deleting the layouts significantly improved the responsiveness of that menu ... even though I have an SSD system, it made a difference. I do not know if the same is true under L6 since I regularly prune them by habit these days.

yup I learned that hard lesson previously. Now I make sure there are layouts of the same kind "above"

With Logos open.

On the upper top right of the screen you'll see this:

when you click to open "layouts" a drop down appears.

in the list appears all the layouts you have saved and applications closed etc.

In the drop down, there 'may' appear saved layouts of the same name. In my layouts drop down appear several "genesis" saved layouts.

I know that the most recently saved layout is the first from the top. So I can delete any layout named "genesis" 'below' the top one and not worry about deleting my most recently saved genesis layout.

That's what we're referring to. hope this helps.

Look at the picture below:

The blue area represents snapshots Logos takes of the way your windows are laid out during your sessions. These are not saved layouts but only snapshots (think of it as a cache). And it is searchable as you can see above.

In order to save (for the first time) a layout, you use the green area and give it a name. Then it should appear in the red area.

Consider now this second screenshot:

Once a layout has been saved. It also will appear in the snapshots on the right. That is, when the layout is opened and being used, Logos continues to take snapshots of it in case you want to update your layout later (which may not mean only changing the position of windows but also which pages resources are on). So, the fourth item on the right which says "FR Doctoral Seminar (Other)" is a snapshot Logos took of it "Yesterday 5:02 PM". It is NOT a duplicate layout. The saved layout is on the left "FR Doctoral Seminar (Other)". The difference between the two is that I did some reading between the time I saved the layout and the time the snapshot was taken. Unless I update my layout, when I click on it again (on the left), it will show as what it was before yesterday's reading. If I click on the snapshot, it will show where my reading was at at the time indicated. There is therefore no need to erase snapshots. They're just part of your history and can even come in handy if you forget to update your layout or save it.

The brown rectangles indicate how you update your layout when you have already saved it previously. On the right, if the layout was currently opened in Logos ("active") you can click "update active". Or on the left, click on the little arrow and then select "update to current snapshot".

To summarize, you should have only one instance of a specific layout on the left but a number of snapshots of it on the right. Those on the right are not duplicates and can be left alone. However, if instead of updating an existing layout you keep on using "save" and give it the same name then you will get: Genesis, then Genesis(1) then Genesis(2) and so forth. Unless you want different versions of the same layout, you need to use update instead.

I think this is how you would expect it to work ... but as far as I can tell, it does not.

The red list on the left does not contain any layout data ... none ... they are only shortcuts. If they were were to hold actual layout data then deleting all layouts from the blue side would still leave you with the red side instance (layout data). Instead, removing the last existing 'snapshot' as you call it in the blue area, will delete the link in the red, no warning. The blues are not 'snapshots' nor histories, they are the actual complete layouts, including a thumbnail, which is what you see. The red list is only a convenient link to the most recent instance of a given layout.

I could be wrong ... but if I am then there is a serious bug that deleting blue history entries can delete red data.

Your description is somewhat misleading because you don't mention the significance of "Application Closed" layouts and your Startup option (in Program Settings).

"Application Closed" is the snapshot that is taken automatically when you close/exit Logos and it is used for continuity in the next session if your Startup option is "Most Recent Layout" (ignoring the distinction between "local" and "any"). If your Startup option is one of your named layouts then its state depends on when you last saved it.

So, the fourth item on the right which says "FR Doctoral Seminar (Other)" is a snapshot Logos took of it "Yesterday 5:02 PM"

It is a layout that you named at that time or that was manually saved via "Update active" or "update to current snapshot". When Logos (automatically) saves a layout it is named "Application Closed" or "Snapshot".

There is therefore no need to erase snapshots. They're just part of your history and can even come in handy if you forget to update your layout or save it.

There is a performance penalty for keeping layouts/snapshots over a long period of time, especially if you manually save quite frequently. You can remove all but the most recent "Application Closed" layout quite safely and the same applies to your saved layouts. Note that you have to guess which of your layouts is saved as a specific "Application Closed"!

The blues are not 'snapshots' nor histories, they are the actual complete layouts, including a thumbnail, which is what you see. The red list is only a convenient link to the most recent instance of a given layout.

I agree about the use of "snapshots" but the "blues" were snapshots at one time, so they could be called a "history" in that sense! And you will see some layouts with the name "Snapshot".

I could be wrong ... but if I am then there is a serious bug that deleting blue history entries can delete red data.

Deleting all instances of a specific layout will delete the (red) shortcut as many have found out! Faithlife don't want to touch "active" layouts because there are so many other ways to ruin your layout...

Not one stroke as that is the path to despair and ruin! Two strokes if it is your active layout:

Delete the active layout (the one that is ticked) but remember its name e.g. 'Laptop 6'!
Save the "Now" layout as 'Laptop 6' as it is the most recent thumbnail!

Otherwise you have to save your current layout and then load the layout you want to delete.
