The Encyclopedia of Christianity

I put this resource in my priority list, but it is the only dictionary that doesn't seem to bring results back when I do a word search. For instance, I did a search for "salvation" and there is an entry for it, but it just doesn't come up. Why is this?

    From another thread (http://community.logos.com/forums/p/3470/27363.aspx#27363):

    [quote]

First of all, "topic" has a new and different meaning in L4 (i'm going to call them concepts
here to try to keep the distinction straight). We've put a lot of work
into building a new framework for concepts that will provide much
better results going forward. Right now our concept coverage is very
incomplete: even though we have about 11,000 such concepts, they still
don't include much church history (so no Calvin yet), they only include
key Bible dictionaries (ISBE, Anchor, and some others), and they don't
yet include all the possible synonyms for a concept.

I think the dictionary has to be prepared to show up in the topic section. (assuming that where you were looking to find it)

How are you searching for it?

If I search for the term salvation I get almost 179,000 results in almost 84,000 articles. At the bottom of the search page I can scroll through at least 20 pages of results.Make sure you do a "Basic" search. Also check to make sure you're not just searching your last book. Logos remembers.

What you could try is creating a collection of dictionaries and include this one, then search the collection.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I am searching for it in the Word study. I like to do searches there if I am looking for just the main entry from a collection of resources.

By the way, I am loving the new Lexham resources, The Encyclopedia of Christianity Volume 4, and the Oxford Dictionary of the Church.

    Hi Jeremy,

The type associated with The Encyclopedia of Christianity Volume 4 (and Volumes 1-3) is 'Monograph' rather than 'Dictionary'. This is most likely why it does not appear in the Definition section of the Bible Word Study guide. I am checking on this.

    Thanks,
    Melissa

A monograph? Ahhhhhhhhh! I thought it was called "The Encyclopedia of Christianity" because it was a dictionary/encyclopedia. At the very least, couldn't a book have multiple Types?

Some of the typing was atypical. A lot of stuff got thrown in the 'monograph' type. I don't know why.

Can someone explain to me how to see what "Type" a particular book is? I can't seem to figure it out.

In the library, set it to the Grid view, then right click on the column titles, and a menu will come up.  Select "type" on the menu to show the type column.

I just noticed that the second commentary from the NAC series on Genesis has also been included in the crossgrade for Logos 4 in gold. Sweet!

I am using my Dictionary collection in my Word Study and the Encyclopedia of Christianity is in it, but I still am not able register this resource in my searches. I thought that by making a collection and using this collection as the only method of pulling resources, I would be able to finally be able to utilize the E. of C. in my Word Studies. Any clue as to why this keeps happening?

    Hi Jeremy,

As I think Melissa was trying to explain to you, the Bible Word Study guide looks only through resources that are typed as "dictionary" since all of the sections in it are look-up (in a dictionary or lexicon) type sections not general searches. (See image below for the Guide Template Editor for BWS which shows all the sections.) So unfortunately BWS will ignore the E of C, since it is currently mistyped. This should be fixed in a future release, since it really is a dictionary.

Though there is no way to do a Headword search in Logos 4, you could open the resource in question and navigate to the Salvation headword using its Table of Contents pane. I know this isn't a perfect solution because it won't let you look up that word in one fell swoop across a multitude of books, but at least it's a way you can avoid having that one particular resource left out of your word searches. For now. Until Logos implement some kind of Topic or Headword search, which I believe has been promised.

Though there is no way to do a Headword search in Logos 4,

I guess that is the kicker. I thought that by making a collection and specifically putting the E. of C. in it, I could force Logos to do a headword search for every book in the collection even if the type is mismarked.

I would check the forums and look at the release notes every time a new update is released. The notes will alert you if any new resources are added. But I think at this point you won't find too many books added. Lexham could be updated, but for the most part it is just new additions of books to fix typos and things like that.

Let's keep hoping this makes it back into the design.  So many dictionaries are missed in the topic search right now, and it would allow them to be searched even without the "topical" updating that logos is doing.

Yes, I was wondering about this just today too. Volume 5 in the print edition was published in 2008 (at least the entire set was complete as of May 2008). It's now 2010. Ahem... :-)  (Aren't we impatient!)

Most of them (refer back to the 2nd post in this thread).  It would probably be easier to list what is included in the topic search (mainly non-specialized bible dictionaries like ISBE, AYDB, BDB, NBD, EBD, TDB), but here's a list of dictionaries in my library that currently won't appear in the topic search:

    Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary
    Concise Oxford English Dictionary
    Columbia Encyclopedia
Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels
Dictionary of Paul and His Letters
Dictionary of the Later New Testament and Its Developments
    Dictionary of New Testament Background
    Dictionary of Biblical Imagery
    New Dictionary of Theology
    New Dictionary of Biblical Theology
    Dictionary of Christianity in America
A Dictionary of Women in Church History
    Who's Who in Christian History
Bible Interpreters of the 20th Century
    Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Dictionary
    Nelson's New Christian Dictionary
    Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary
    New Dictionary of Biblical Theology
    Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology
All of the IVP Pocket Dictionaries
The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church
The Archaeological Encyclopedia of the Holy Land
Baker Encyclopedia of Psychology & Counseling
Biographical Entries from Evangelical Dictionary of Theology

And of course, the Encyclopedia of Christianity.

Also, many of these are monographs when they should be dictionaries (in addition to not being topically tagged for L4).

So, we have it (Volume 5) in the Prepub. Great. I am very glad we can have this resource in Logos. I use it quite often.

Volumes 1-4 are not tagged with headwords and as such is of limited value as a dictionary or encyclopedia. Given the price of this resource I would want confirmation that the book acts like a dictionary/encyclopedia when included in collections, ties to bible word studies etc.

Would it take a lot of work to tag them? It is pretty ridiculous if it won't ever be tagged. For some reason I had no problem with them in L3.

This resource FINALLY works in word searches now. Thanks Logos!
