Logos 6 is Slow

I have noticed that Logos 6 has been running very slow lately and clunky. Scrolling is not smooth and opening up books is slow. Right or left arrowing to the next book is slow.

This is something that didn't happen when L6 first came out. I was very happy with the speed but now it's just slow.

I'm running:

Logos Bible Software 6.0a SR-36.0.1.1339

on Windows 8.1 16.0 GB. 64bit

Intel 17-3770 cpu @ 3.40ghz

I am on 6.0a SR3 as well, and have had the same sluggish performance since 6.0a beta 1. They said there was an active case in development but no new news about this yet.

I wonder if this is a widespread windows issue?

I am using Verbum 6.0a SR-3 6.0.1.1339 Mac while running Mac OS X 10.10.1... Something seems very wrong because on the mac scrolling is smooth as glass, and I am scrolling faster than anyone could read. The RI (I tired NRSV) in both the greek and hebrew also scrolls fast as I can do it. My Library is also scrolling great. As well this release for me seemed to fix the slow population of right clicked words. I hope Logos fixes the issues you are experiencing, I find it quite odd that a Release would have made it out with such defects.

Yup, it's been quite slow for me lately too. It's getting frustrating.

Some of the things that are slow:

Updating Library catalog while tagging or assigning ratings

Populating dropdowns (e.g., the Open menu in Collections, but pretty much any dynamic dropdown is slower now).

Search is noticeably slower than it used to be

Opening Layouts

Sometimes the program seems to hang for 5-10 seconds or so before user input (e.g., clicking to bring the focus somewhere) takes effect.

Scrolling on my Mac is slow. Yesterday I had two crashes while scrolling through a commentary quickly. The crash logs were submitted on restart automatically.

Logos is the slowest program on my system, but then it always has been! However, it is the most memory-greedy also.

I hope things will change, but I doubt it.

I have a SSD drive and a fast computer and only the library is clunky.

English is not my mother tongue but I assume "clunky" is the right word.

I feel the clunkiness may have something to do with that if they have reorganized the library database with views.

This morning I've updated to L6 SR-4 and I think it caused some additional sluggishness to L6.

Intermittently I see the rotating ring which may be a new form of the hourglass, and I can take a cup of coffee or so but the program does not stop, and after coffee it works fine for an hour or so.

I think startup is slow as well - the splash screen is up for 15-20 seconds each time I start up. I have a pretty high powered desktop system - Win 64, I3770K cpu, 16GB Ram, SSD C drive, etc.

It would be better to start a new thread for your issue, along with your hardware specs and any specifics of what you are doing in Logos 6. Also, be sure any downloads and/or indexing had been completed as this can slow things down quite a bit.

Startup to a layout with just the ESV bible open took over 1 minute as well when I issued the search below the time for the suggestion pull down to appear was over 30 seconds (this was much faster as I remember, almost immediate). This was done on an 2.4Ghz i7 and windows 7.

Yes it was SR-5 not SR-4, my mistake. At any rate the latest still has many performance issues.

I have no idea what is going on with 6. As I said above I was having no issues or speed issues on my macBook Pro... It is fully true it takes about 90 seconds to load completely for me but after that I have smooth sailing. I was a bit puzzled to see the complaint by the mac user and hope that tech support can help him ASAP.

I have a rMBP w/ 16GB of Ram and if I scroll ANYTHING I get a pinwheel. Then a crash. Followed by a reboot. I'm thinking about reinstalling Logos to see if it fixes the issue.

I am having no issues with my iMac Logos 6 like you (to start up it takes about 15 -20 sec), however I am on the beta on my iMac. It is only on windows do I have performance issues. I am surprised more windows users have not chimed in on this post.

Although I DO NOT have a powerhouse machine, it is adequate but Logos runs slow for me as well but it always has! For speed and stability issues Logos is NOT my program of choice and hasn't been for a while. There are many things to be liked about Logos but speed and stability are not two of them!

I have Logos Bible Software 6.0a SR-5 6.0.1.1352 installed in windows and OSX.

In Windows, I have HP book pro 15" i5 2.3ghz 4G RAM 500 HD SATA. The speed is slow. It hung sometimes during searching and using using visual copy, etc.

In OSX, I have Macbookpro retina 15" i7 2.5ghz 16G RAM 512 SSD. The speed is very fast. I did not experience the hanging while searching, using visual copy, etc.

This is just my observation.

Yep. Just upgraded yesterday. It's molassas, similar to Logos4. Just watching the molassas dripping, it looks like they converted only part of the code. If you put a tab over top the older Logos Media Hymnal, and then remove it, the amount of cycles needed to re-paint is really unbelievable. And when you hit the end of the buffers while paging, it's serious refresh buffer time. They're not refreshing in the background.

Absent Rick's work (Passage Guide, etc), I think I'd done better to wait for Logos7 (just guessing at how long it'll take to get back to Logos5 speeds).

Imagine trying to index a 10GB library on a machine that's extremely under powered. I just bought an HP Stream 13 and it only comes with 32GB of storage built-in. I tried installing Logos but it takes up all of the free space, so I put it on an SD card and it's been indexing for over a day now and still only at 14%.

I sure wish Logos would figure out a way to pre-index libraries and then download them for these kinds of machines that are rare, but seem to be getting more prevalent with Windows 8 tablets running only 32GB and sometimes 16GB. I'll give it another day, but may have to just not bother with Logos on it, which would mean using WORDsearch 10 which runs just fine.

Imagine trying to index a 10GB library on a machine that's extremely under powered.

A Dell Latitude ST tablet is under powered with an Intel Atom Z670 CPU at 1.50 GHz so indexing a library with 50 GB of resource files is not practical; would take many days along with potential for extensive heat build-up. Fortunately, the tablet has 128 GB SSD so can clone complete Logos library. Due to CPU slowness, have turned off wireless access on tablet to avoid network infections while not running real time anti-virus software.

For Logos 6, plan to create a virtual machine with 32 bit Windows 7 on a fast Dell laptop (same OS as slow tablet). Optionally can use Logos 6 offline in VM so could reduce library size for indexing (by hiding resources) and subsequent cloning. Note: if choose to hide resources, prudent to not sync that installation with Logos servers to avoid hiding propagation.

Still slow spinning beach balls , hangs, etc - It is so frustrating
All my other pro apps which are heavy on all the above hardware sing and dance with no performance issues.

I have not tried these steps because they seem to address the issues of downloading on indexing. I have not had a problem with downloading an indexing - especially after I did a clean install of my operating system and programs. Everything downloaded and indexed fine. (I didn't get any error messages and the computer did not time out through out the entire process.

Do you think these steps would help when adding prayers to my prayer list or working with a Hebrew devotional?

I noticed that as well with respect to first starting the program. Now it first starts slower (about 1 minute) before I can start using it. I think it loads quicker when I close it and start it again. (I suspect some indexing or some such because Chrome does the same thing on first start up). Otherwise the movement of the window is smoother than the previous version and word searches and scrolls run fine as a rule.

I have been a Logos user for several years, but this is the first time I am posting to the forums. I want to concur with everyone here that something is up with Logos 6. At first, i blamed hardware on my Mac Mini, which is newer, but when my upgraded Windows laptop started exhibiting the same behavior, I started watching Logos more carefully. Logos 5 ran like a champ on my Windows laptop (Win 8.1 64, quad-core i7 3615QM, 8 GB of Ram, SSDs) but Logos 6 on both platforms is sluggish on low processing, memory access, and disk access activities. Seems like bad calls within the Logos 6 code, not the hardware or OS.

Whatever they have done, it is really affecting the whole Logos 6 experience with massive slow down from scrolling to opening resources. I wish I could identify what patch I first start noticing this problem!!! None of the links posted here seem to get at the core. This is beyond a OS X Yosemite and Hebrew problem... Has anyone heard anything for Logos acknowledging the problem with an ETA on fix?

First, let me respond to the OP:

An initial step when diagnosing resource scrolling issues is to close all other panels and disable all of your visual filters. This can help isolate a problem that may exist with a particular panel, resource, or visual filter. Screencasts and logs are particularly valuable starting points for developers as they help us to understand exactly what you are describing.

Now, to the thread as a whole:

It is difficult to acknowledge generalities. There have been several performance-related issues that have been fixed recently and most of them were isolated using a combination of screencasts and/or user logs (notably with sampling if on Mac).

This isn't to say we are sitting on our hands regarding the general issues that have been raised. Quite to the contrary! There are already projects underway to improve our automated benchmark tests and to develop some better tools (not unlike the sampling feature on Mac) in order to help diagnose specific user issues in real world scenarios. The later is important because of the variety of hardware configurations and library sizes/combinations.

At any rate it would be nice to here from Faithlife on this issue.

Unfortunately, it is not just one issue. Many performance issues have already been addressed (as means of example, Hebrew rendering on Mac comes to mind) or are being actively worked on (your other thread). Unwittingly, the OP created a sounding board for a variety of performance issues which have all coalesced into this thread in such a way as to make it difficult to isolate any one particular issue. It becomes difficult and intimidating to create an "official" response to such a thread. Even here, my guess is that someone will misunderstand my response and use it as further evidence that we somehow are either willfully ignorant or don't care about their issue. I can assure you that neither is true.

My advice for getting the best response is to keep the thread focused on one specific area of poor performance. Then, if possible, provide a screencast and logs showing your specific issue. This provides a starting point for us to isolate and identify the actual root cause and provide a fix.

I don't want to detract from the OP's individual issue anymore than I have to; so feel free to create a new thread with your issue and the additional information mentioned, and I will respond to each individually.

OK... Let's start with startup time. [:D]

I have a Windows 64 system, I3770K Quad Core CPU, 16GB of RAM, 256GB SSD C Drive, Logos 6 installed on a 1TB WD Caviar Black D drive, and a 50Mbps internet connection. Just to make sure there wasn't any upgrade grunge hanging around, I totally uninstalled Logos6 and reinstalled using the current installer. My resource library is 5.8GB. And I let indexing complete.

The splash screen is present for anywhere from 30-60 seconds. The Sync message doesn't always show up, but can be present for another 30 seconds. Alan thanks for the response, Logos 6 is a complex program with lots of parts and I agree general statements about performance problems are difficult if not impossible to deal with as without problem identification you can't provide a fix. With that said three issues i previously reported on a fast windows 7 machine seem to be preforming well enough now with the latest 6.0b RC2, that is lag when filtering library and smooth scrolling as well delay for paging down a resource. So, progress is being made from my perspective.

However, I do have another thread open https://community.logos.com/forums/t/98800.aspx for syntax search. If it has not been looked at I just wanted to bring it to your attention.

Please elaborate about storage. Common to these slow actions is reading from storage device so am curious about storage hardware.

Performance improvements for Hebrew on Mac are coming in the next version of Logos (6.1).
