Performance with SSD (solid state drives)and pagefile settings

Has anyone noticed any performance degradation putting the swap file / pagefile in a standard harddrive? The larger the SSD the less it matters but since I have a fairly small SSD I moved my pagefile to my backup harddrive (that has nothing else to do in life) and I notice no performance loss at all. It loads just as fast and completes searches through over 1,000 resources almost too fast to believe.

If you have, say, 8 GB memory you're less likely to swap programs/segments to pagefile than with 4 GB and paging to a different partition/drive can be more efficient, so I wouldn't expect any difference in performance with at least 6 GB memory and a multi-core processor.

My pagefile is on the SSD and its size is usually the same as the amount of memory you have, but I keep it at 4GB with 8 GB memory because I monitor usage and know that is safe.

It's strange to me because my Samsung SSD utility set my Virtual Memory at a "custom size" of 200-1024 MB but task manager reports it as 2.23GB in Win-7 and when it was set the same in XP it never went above 1.2GB in Task Manager but was usually at about 800+ MB

I have 8GM memory but I have Win-7 Home Premium that reports only 3.8 as usable.

Or is Task Manager showing how much physical RAM is being utilized?

If have adequate RAM, then a pagefile is not needed. Another tweak is using a RAM disk for temp files. Caveat: have learned 512 MB RAM disk is a bit too small for rebuilding Library index; works fine when adding a few resources to library.

Black Friday laptop upgrade to 16 GB Ram included removing pagefile plus moving Windows 7 boot partition to Crucial MX 100 SSD:

The 512 GB SSD has a partition for Windows and a partition for Logos 6 (from previous custom installation for Logos 6 to a different drive).

I'm almost there but a little behind you on the graphics with an older Nvidia GForce 9600 GT but don't see any need to upgrade it yet. I have a 7.8 on the hard drive but I have it tweaked for longevity rather than performance but I'm note sure changing that would make a difference.

That sounds as if you are using Win7 32. You will only use your full 8 GB if you have win7 64 installed.

I have used Win7 64 for 2 years now together with an SSD for my boot files and disabled the pagefile when I installed it as I had 16GB of Ram. No problems.

I changed my pagefile from the SSD to the backup hard drive: Now the C: has slightly more free space and Logos6 works the same, and the library is still clunky.

Thanks Dave, in my first try I only added the drive but overlooked that I need to disable the virtual memory in C: drive.

Now I have 5 GB more in C:

The performance is the same.

Hi John, I had my virtual memory only on a standard hard drive until recently. I have 8GB RAM with a 250GB SSD. I haven't noticed any change to Logos, but Outlook has stopped becoming non-responsive since I moved the virtual memory to the SSD. Firefox seems to be more consistently fast too. But only a very small proportion of virtual memory is actually in practice, even when lots of floating windows are in use, from what I have analysed, so the negative impact on SSD lifespan seems minimal and nothing to worry about.

Funny that when I had a small pagefile of 200-1024 in XP I was getting out of memory messages pop up when it was only using 1/4 of my physical RAM but no problems with any programs and then when I set XP to No Pagefile the messages went away and the performance stayed good.

Just got L6 and have been checking things out. One thing I notice is I managed to get it up to 12g virtual memory, running with 8g ram (64/system). When you move between large layouts, it simply asks for more and doesn't back off, eventually paging badly, and everyone else pretty much at a standstill. Also if you watch it load up large layouts, it seems erratic, grabbing 6g and then quickly letting go. I'd assume they'll slowly get the kinks out.
