WARNING: SR-2 and Downloads

The latest version SR-2 and recent downloads (the last was c. 1.5 GB) has left many installations in a very unstable state, with L4 crashing, syntax searches crashing, missing Interlinear sections on popular reverse interlinears & LogosLXX, and Biblical people, places and things being greyed out.

My advice, what I'm doing now, is NOT downloading anything until we hear from Logos.

If you want to do this go to Program Settings and set Automatically Download Updates to NO. This gives warning of a download and you can REFUSE it.

To this list can be added the following sections of the Bible Word Study:

    • Translation
    • Example Uses Grammatical Relationships
    • Preposition Use

Also while the LXX cannot be displayed at all (), and appears to be missing it can be searched!

There are also several missing resources. These include: LXX Logos Morphology, 1000 Bible Images, Cascadia Syntax Graphis of the NT: Glossary; and probably others.

Attempting to access Cascadia Syntax Graphs of the OT, or Lexham Syntax Graphs of the Greek New Testament, crashes Logos 4 (see log file for an instance of the Cascadia OT graphs crashing L4 below).

    Logos4.log

EDIT: I agree. This does not seem to be a stable release. While most of these issues cannot be worked around for most users, there are probably a few more unknowns that make me affirm the advice to delay downloading this release until Logos can respond -- probably after the weekend.

If it helps, this is a list of my resource directory contents: Resource.txt

Too bad this happened over the holidays.  Still Logos needs to get this fixed as soon as possible.  This is a disastrous download.  Hopefully, many will heed your warning.  Unfortunately I didn't see it until after the fact.

    Hey,

I'm running this version on 2 computers and it's working BETTER.  Must be all the good karma points that I have here, huh?

For what it's worth, I had major problems with SR-2, but deleting my index folder and rebuilding the index seems to have solved the problems for me.

Wow guys. I'm so sorry that you are experiencing such problems. I'm guessing that there must be some commonality to your installations and/or resources. Like David, I have been running SR-2 with no problems at all. Release number: 4.01.3.4767

EDIT: For what it is worth. I went from 4.0a directly to SR-2, never installed SR-1. Not sure if that made any big difference. One thing for sure is that I didn't experienced the big downloads you guys are referring to either.

I just deleted my index file as per Mark Barnes...

I'll report back to see if this makes a difference.

    Thanks Bohuslav.

Sorry guys, apparently it does not work. I deleted the index folder and did a new total indexing on my Win 7 notebook. Nothing visible changed. 1000 Bible Images are missing, Biblical Places, Things and People are still grayed (not usable). Sorry. It looks we need to hear from Logos on that problem.

Hi Dave, how can I tell for sure how big the downlaod was? As I recall it was less than a GIG. When I look in my resource folder, the files that appear to be timestamped when I did the update all appear to be updates to various Bibles: NRS, NLT, NKJV, NAS, LXX, etc.

Can I look elsewhere to be a help?

**EDIT**: For what it is worth to those troubleshooting this, the update to SR-2 for me went off without incident. I have Scholars with some addition unlocks (BDAG/HALOT, WBC, IVP Essentials, Anchor, as well as some other smaller lexicon's/dictionaries and commentaries). I went from 4.0a directly to SR-2. Ran the update on 12/31. Machine is running Windows 7 on a high end notebook.

Just a note of information: I have downloaded SR-2 (Scholars) (and the big downloads) to my two computers and there has been no problem at all. 1 computer is running windows XP SP3 and the other is my Mac running Windows 7 in a Fusion 3.1 VM. The only thing different that I can thing of in my set up is that these machines never ran any of the 4.0a beta versions. I kept that in a different account on my VM and deleted it when 4.0a reached RC status.

    Hi Dave,

I updated from the RC2 via the beta to SR 2. I received the first update along with several interlinears around 800megs. And then updated to the fix for the Dec 31 bug separately. I do not have any of the problems outlined in this post except the NLT search on lemmas gives me zero results. I have a desktop computer that also updated fine except for the NLT issue.

The laptop I updated prior to Dec 31, the laptop however was on Dec 31 and required me to use the ctrl function and open to a blank layout. I then updated the 800 megs.

My laptop is running XP via Parallels 5 on a Macbook Pro and the desktop is running XP on a two year old HP.

I can live with the NLT problem and am not going to reindex at this time. I hope this helps you or Logos figure things out.

Thanks for the warning, Dave!  And I am sorry others were inconvenienced.   I had learned to wait a couple of days for any downloads and just use L3 for peace of mind and heart; now, I will wait until upgrades or updates to L4 work without complaints.  I might just wait until 4.0b comes out.  [:D]

Like some of the others, I'm not having problems with the SR-2 download (running Vista). It has fixed a few items. I am, however, becoming increasingly dismayed at all of the problems associated with using Logos 4. Doing many of the things I have done in the past can now be done only through numerous "work-arounds." AND...I miss the key strokes; virtually forced to use a mouse. Anyone aware of a keystroke to open "highlighting"?

Interesting.  I have Silver running on two laptops:

    1. Win7 laptop: No problems, Biblical People etc all showing and working fine, 1000 Images loads up fine.  In the Resource folder, 15 of them (mostly Bibles, OT *and* NT) were updated on 12/30.

    2. XP Tablet laptop: Same problems as observed by others, Biblical People etc greyed out, 1000 Images says Resource Missing (but it's not, it's in the Resource folder on both machines with same date and file size).  In the Resource folder,  only 5 of them (NRSVNT, NLTNT, KJV1900OT/NT, ESVOT) were updated on 12/30.

I think both machines received updates < 1GB.  I believe laptop #1 was updated on 12/31, laptop #2 was updated yesterday 1/1.  Maybe that was why?  Maybe the "12/31 fix" broke something if downloaded after 12/31?

I also skipped SR-1 and went directly from 4.0a to SR-2 on both machines.  Hope this helps with the troubleshooting.

Ctrl-K to highlight; Ctrl-Shift-K to erase, just like in Logos 3

In Help (F1), search for    Keyboard    and you'll get all the keyboard shortcuts in Logos 4.

    Hope this helps,

Hello Dave (and all who are trying to troubleshhot this),

I received four updates as I recalled - two of 800+ MB each and two 36+ MB (updating from SR-1 to SR-2). My system went into short periods of indexing after th 800+ MB downloads (which were probably the updates for the interlinears). I did NOT experience the "DEC 31" bug after the first SR-2 update - from what I gathered, it was time zone dependant (I live in the Dallas TX USA area - US Central time zone).

The only problem I see from my system is with the NLT interlinear. I have the interlinear pane (others have reported that it was missing), but I can't execute any right-click search from within the interlinear (no pop-up window). I can perform right-click searches from with the main text.

I have the same scenario & results as you. I live in OKC, my upgrade happened on 12-30-2009, it was 807mb and indexed quickly. I think it was followed by a tiny fix file.
My Bible People/Places/Things seems to work fine.
I can only see a problem with NLT Interlinear. My other interlinears work fine.

While I started typing this, Logos went into indexing...Maybe I did not disable updates per Dave quickly enough. I will have to wait & see.

I went from 4.0a directly to sr-2 and have experienced none of the problems mentioned.

I'm currently in a location where my internet is extremely slow. I'm getting about 1.2gb of updates. Some seems to be the interlinears but I'm also receiving my theological journals bibliotheca sacra 1-90 again. Although I have them already from the galaxie ftp. (I might be heading for some trouble with these because the ones from the galaxie ftp are newer. Don't know why it's downloading the older ones).

It would be nice for the download updater to have a "pause option" so that my internet is not constantly bogged down by the downloads. Right now I only see "cancel download"

In the past when I had problems with my resources I just deleted the whole index and after re-indexing everything was fine again. There was also one instance where I started from scratch and that fixed almost all of my problems with L4.

For those who have problems now maybe we could also remove a possible problem with the year from the whole equation. Maybe set the date back to 28-30 december 2009 and check if the problem is still there.

I'm assuming that some at least have sent a request to Customer Service about this problem?  As tempting as it is to send more, I think that might be self-defeating - I'm sure they will quickly become aware of the turmoil SR2 has created, but a flood of e-mail complaints will probably slow the whole process down.

For the record I have SR2 installed on my machine with all updates and it's working fine with none of the specific issues mentioned (thankfully!). Admittedly I did a rebuild index after it arrived - although I understanding that didn't work for everyone.

I'm sure we'll have an answer soon on our queries!

Yeah caught in the download before full awareness of the issues had been identified. This is a really troubling release and seems to be getting worse as the resources impacted are discovered. They need to get a fix in ASAP and not perform a release on a holiday weekend with nobody - apprarently - monitoring the issues.

I tend not to be overly critical but this was poopr timing. It's hard to demo L4 when there are missing resources and broken functionality like the reverse interlinears, not to mention message and study impacts.

I have had no problems with the NLT NT Interlinear - it works fine - right clicks and all - visual filters based on Interlinear added automatically and work fine.

But, 1000 Bible Images is missing - appears in the library but get a message saying it is missing when I try to open it. Biblical People, Places and Things are grayed out -- In a PG they are grayed out, but still show with a "down arrow" indicating they are active and should open.

I have had no crashes and can run a PG and link to Commentaries, etc.

I can run Basic, Bible, Morph and Syntax searches. Use, create and edit Reading Plans. Can't think of anything else I've done in the last couple of days.

I had an 800 MB download then a start on indexing then another download which was added onto the first (First one worked through the 800+ MBs then indexing appeared for a minute then download re-started at about 94% of the 850 MB (I think) and finished) then it did a complete index in 1.5 hours.

I have Platinum and have had every update - I ran separate account Beta until RC2 then overwrote my 4.0 SR2 and went through the rest of the updates as they came.

I updated on Dec. 30 about 6:30 pm Mountain Standard Time.

I'm using an Acer TravelMate 7730, 4 GB RAM, 2.0 Ghz 2-core Intel with integrated graphics, Vista Business.

Hope this helps with the troubleshooting.

If your installation seems like it's working, work on. [:D]

I haven't seen a post that says things get worse AFTER install... only with.

Myself, I'm going to "camp" with L3 for the remainder of the weekend--but then enough parts of L4 aren't working that I've just made the choice not to worry about whether it's doing what it's supposed to. But that's my choice, based on my mileage. Your mileage may differ.

I was asked by Richard to post the following info in this thread (the original post can be found here

[quote]Just for interest sake.  I have two computers running Logos4 one is is using 4a (build .4533), and the other up to date with sr2 and the newly updated resources.

Both are acting the same way (I have lost some of my interlinears, and biblical people, places and things, etc.).

This means that the problems probably aren't related to either SR-2 or the recent updates, but some other preexisting problem.

Again to be clear.  On my system that is still on 4a with the old resources (that was working fine several days ago as I definitely used my NKJV interlinear and biblical people function), I am now having the same problems as described in this thread.

I have had a couple of minor crashes with SR-2. (minor because I could not reproduce them, and it hasn't happened for about 48 hrs now)

Other than that, I am not having major issues at the moment.

It sounds to me the problem is in the sync code, on the server end, or something hosed up the data on the server side, since it appears:

    - problems exist on both 4.0a and 4.0a SR-2

    - appears problems may be related to those who downloaded the SR-1 patch

-appears fresh reinstall may not solve the problem

The only problem with this is that my 4a install is set not to use the internet.  I also checked my netbook (that I rarely use).  It is 4a beta four, and it has the same problems and is also set to not connect to the internet.

I would say that it has something to do with our licences and the date (the new year), but it seams that some people have things working right on one system but not on another.  Weird.

I'm sure the logos team will be quick to respond to this Monday morning.

My guess is that the problem is with the Logos servers.  I narrowed down the time when functionality is lost to exactly 2:00AM (Central Time - I'm in Houston) on 1/1/2010.  That would be the start of the new year in Bellingham, WA.

I can't think of why 2:00AM would otherwise "trip" this problem.

Well Richard it looks like you "nailed" it!

I moved my date back to 12/28/09 and also have full functionality. Looks like the SR-2 release may not be the issue but an underlying year issue. Although I have my 1000 Biblical Images, My People, Places, & Things, my Reverse Interlinears for NKJV, NASB, ESV, etc. But no Reverse Interlinear for the NLT.

    In Christ,

I narrowed down the time when functionality is lost to exactly 2:00AM (Central Time - I'm in Houston) on 1/1/2010.  That would be the start of the new year in Bellingham, WA.

Good call.  That's what I get too, only it's a 3hr difference here in the Eastern Time Zone.

I wonder how it affects those that did or did not have the date aberration on December 31 (where it was reading 2010)?

You clearly misunderstand, we on the West Coast know that the world really uses Pacific Coast Univeral Reality Time (PCURT) - which is much more pliable than GMT.

I just changed my computer date to Dec 2, 2009 and I get all my functionality back.

    Excellent detective work Richard!

You really stuck to digging for the answer.
