Are you a hoarder?

A question that my wife and I are considering as we upgrade our L4 is what do we do with the printed resources that are being duplicated or superseded by the L4 resources. For instance I have quite a few original language resources that I haven't opened for a couple of years because what I have in Logos is better and faster. Yet I was really hesitant to get rid of them because they had such special memories as I was learning Greek. Well, I decided that those special memories will be enhanced by watching someone else enjoy them as much as I have. So God put a friend of mine on my heart, he is starting a home bible study and is doing his word studies with Strongs and Vines. I went through my book shelf and pulled out half a dozen books that were suitable, and have committed to him that I will spend the time with him to show him how to use them in study.

God has blessed many of us with fantastic resources in Logos, have you considered what to do with the printed resources that you already may have had? Just a caution, don't give something away just to get it off your shelf, I could given my friend a dozen or so more books. But he wouldn't have used them because they are too advanced. Give them away to people who will use them, not just hoard them.

I helped over 10 Seminary Students with over 200 books (total) that I had dups on LOGOS. I gave one 25 books last night as he left for Michigan!

I had over 1000 books I gave many to friends, and the rest went to a local church, it more than doubled their reference section and now they actually have a language section.

There are also seminaries and Bible institutes in Europe, Western and especially Eastern, who would greatly benefit (Serbia, Croatia, Albania, etc). Most of my reference library is now on the shelves of the Institut Biblique de Genève for future generations of students. Even in France and Switzerland, it's hard to find the funds to build a good library.

This is a great idea and thanks for the Theological Book Network link! I'd already begun thinking about donating some of my collection of print-based theological reference works now that I never use them anymore. In fact most of them are still packed in boxes from my move three years ago and I haven't missed them since I have most of them in Logos format now. A few years ago I donated (newly purchased) an entire basic church library to my parents' small church which really had nothing much at the time but a few simplistic Bible study guides and some popular paperbacks. It gave me a wonderful sense of joy to help them out in that way.

I too am sharing some printed resources with others who have expressed a desire to develop in their walk--thus far on a loan basis (not necessarily expecting to see any book back that I loan--I've learned that the hard way over the years).

However, I've also got things like a very old set+ of The Pulpit Commentary that I inherited from one of my grandfathers--several books are in very bad condition due to their being kept in his basement office, but they are of such sentimental value I can't get myself to throw them out. They & similar very old resources that both my grandfathers used (both Pastors) cross the book shelves near me, and I suppose serve as a multi-generational "call to arms" to rally me in my own Bible study/spiritual growth.

Of course, that doesn't explain why I'm holding onto all the racks of books in my two-"library" garage... 8-O

I'm a hoarder. I keep all my printed books, and on several occasions I've bought printed books even if I had them in Logos. I have a few reasons for that. For all that I love computers, I still prefer the paper book. If I'm sitting down to read a book I will almost always want paper in my hands. I love Logos for my sermon prep and Bible studying and I will use it as a reader for some things.

I have the Kindle app for iPhone and do a lot of reading on it, but almost exclusively fiction or other more recreational reading. I've made a few attempts to adjust and read deeper texts from the iPhone or the computer but I just prefer paper.

Another reason for keeping my books is to have a powerless backup. If something were to happen to my computer and I were left without for a while, or if something happens to power in the area, or any of a variety of similar situations, I want access to my books.

I also want something my kids can grab and flip through. Sort of hard for them to grab and flip through my computer.

I have given a multitude of commentaries to a local pastor who loves books and is an avid reader. The rest I am in the process of giving to a new Bible College located 60 miles from me.

If Logos' servers fail, that would not remove a single resource from my computer. I would lose automatic updates and synching—Wait, I don't have those in a print library either. Your caution is a non-issue.

EDIT: Well, we would lose those sermon links on the PG, but I never use them anyway.

My concern is that I've seen a lot of companies go under over the years;

With Logos3 I was pretty confident that my software would continue to operate status quo should that occur.
With Logos4, I'm worried that the strong datalink tether to to the company could pose a problem...although in other posts I've become aware that some Logos users have significant software talent & perhaps the user base would just create it's own patch to simulate the Logos server system.

Well, since L4 can be used with no Internet connection, it would be just as safe as L3. L4 is optimized for the Internet, but it can be installed from discs, using a license file as well.

Some of my books I literally bought with blood while a poor seminary student. I would sell plasma to buy Kittel and Moultan & Geden's Greek Concorance, and others. I have a very deep emotional attachment to these books. I would have to pray a long time before giving those up.

But you make a great point about being a hoarder. I will pray about it.

It is also a valid point that sometimes paper is better than electronic. There is something to be said for holding the book in your hands.

(Hmmm. I just thought about something. Maybe I should consider selling plasma again to buy the New International Commentary in Logos format. Do they take plasma from old preachers?)

I know what you mean, my friend offered to pay me for the books that I gave him, I was scandalized, and told him these books aren't for sale. I worked too hard to get them. [:D]

I can tell you that I consider Logos 4 a complement to my entire library of resources. I would not give away hard copies unless you want to give as unto the Lord to those in need. I would not give them away because you have it on Logos.

I am attending a seminary which considers Logos as additional, not required, since often you cannot go to 3rd world countries as a pastor and boot up and "Logos" it all the way. Additionally, for those that may want to help you add to your library, it is easier for them usually to give you a hard copy vs. figuring out how to give you something through Logos.

Interesting Pat, I was coming from the place of having thousands of dollars in books, that I hadn't opened in years because of my use of Logos. In my mind, if you use something it isn't hoarding. But to be honest with you, as much as I use Logos, it is not necessary to use and understand God's word. God is bigger than any one medium.
