New Bug in Text Selection on 6.0b 6.0.2.0042?

I'm having a consistent intermittent bug in selecting text with either mouse or touchpad, but only in Logos & only since installing Logos 6.0b 6.0.2.0042.
There are several scenarios, as I try to read & highlight:
After highlighting text formatted normally (most repeatable scenario):
- While text is still selected AFTER highlighting it, press shift key down to extend the text selection.
- Left click further on in the resource. Quite often, instead of extending the text, it uses what SHOULD be the end as the start of a new text selection, which ends off the screen (and page), much further in the resource than should be possible to select.
Before highlighting text (intermittently repeatable--depending on resource?):
- Left click (& hold) to select text to highlight.
- Start moving cursor toward end of text. In some places (most often where selection crosses a hot-linked footnote, but sometimes with no footnote or other hotlink involved), instead of desired text being selected, behavior is similar to above: actual text selected begins near where it should end & continues to someplace off screen.
I've been working in NICOT's Ezekiel 1-24.
I've waited a day to report, hoping it'd go away or that I'd see it reported elsewhere in the forum. Not so (on a casual search for "bug text selection"). Is anyone else having text selection problems?

Bill

Two things to consider that might explain what you are seeing: selections have start and end and shift-click moves the end.
What this means in practice...
If you were to place your mouse after "might" in the following sentence and drag the mouse to the start of "example" your selection would be:
"Here is an [end]example text that might[start] appear in your resource."
Then shift-clicking after "resource" would change your selection's end to be:
"Here is an example text that might[start] appear in your resource[end]."
In other words, it is important the direction that the selection is made as to what would be the expected result of a shift-click operation.

I have the same problem (I think it started with the latest release - I am on the Beta channel). Smart Text Selection in OFF in my case.
EDIT: It does the same in any resource - not resource specific bug.

Thanks, but I'm always selecting left to right, top to down. The results are not expected. And unexpected selection results are so far limited either to the Logos app or to this resource within the Logos app. (I'm on study leave & am attempting a book study of Ezekiel within Logos. Working 12-14hr/day & have limited time to test, but it seemed important to see if there was a quick fix.)
Based on Bohuslav's input in this thread, I no longer believe I'm the only one.

That seems like an oxymoron. :-)
No, it is not. [:)] It is consistent in repeating itself again and again but intermittent because it is not always the case. It is possible sometimes to select text properly.

If I can find a repro case, I'm sure I can supply a fix in an upcoming beta but so far I've been unsuccessful. Could one of you who are experiencing this post a screencast to visually demonstrate what you are doing/seeing? That might provide me the piece of information that I'm missing. Thanks.

There are a lot of tools out there (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_screencasting_software), but I've had good luck with Jing (http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html).

I noticed the same thing last night while working on a custom reading plan. I was using Both Grudem's Systematic Theology and Henry's God, Revelation, and Authority.
As you experiences, it was intermittent, but repeatable.
I was excited to try it out because it was in response to an early bug report I made that they fixed the highlight jumping up a line or so. That part seems (mostly) fixed, but this new behavior was weird.

Thanks. I don't know why that text of mine posted in such a huge font. I certainly didn't mean to come across like I was shouting. [:)] I posted it from my phone and had to do some manual manipulation to quote only a portion of your message and not the whole thing (due to a bug in the mobile browser or in the forum software when rendered on a mobile browser).

BTW, this brings back memories of trying to track down a bug in the selection highlighting code in Word where you'd click and drag the mouse all over the place, back and forth around the [start] anchor, and the [start] anchor would jump around to a new place. Yeah, I worked on that code, so I have empathy for whoever will need to fix this bug once a reproducible case of it can be tracked down. I have not been able to reproduce it in just a minute or so of playing around but will keep an eye open for it.

Sorry for the delay... was teaching officer training, today, & couldn't get to it until class was done. Here's a link to a video:

The problem manifested on my 1st attempt to create the video. (No need for a retake. That's how repeatable it is on my system.)

I'm having the same problem since upgrading as well. Very frustrating as I try to highlight one sentence and then it wants to highlight the following 3 paragraphs. In the following screenshot (I think anyone can access it??) I was attempting to highlight "show his stuff" and it jumped to "There is" and highlighted to the end of the section (of which my cursor was nowhere near). Thank you, Bill. That is very helpful to get the privilege to "watch over your shoulder" as you demonstrate the problem you are seeing.
I'm curious if it has something to do with the linked panels or possibly some visual filter combination as these things stand out to me as different from the setup I was using.
When I get back to the office on Monday, I will try to reproduce your environment more closely to see if I can get the bug to occur.

I'm having same problem and it is driving me nuts as it essentially makes it impossible to control what is being copied as it takes in many verses and even whole paragraphs. I had this problem when 6 came out, but it seemed that if I pressed alt key at same time, the highlighting was controlled. Now nothing controls it. This is obviously a very significant bug since most of us use the product to prepare lessons and sermons and if you can't copy correctly then you are in a world of hurt.
It doesn't take any controlled test to find, just try to highlight any verse or section in the middle of a paragraph and you will get it.

Kevin, this seems to be perhaps a combination of the bug that Bill has been dealing with (where the anchor of the selection jumps around) and the undesired effect of having "Smart Selection" turned on (a new feature in Logos 6 where Logos expands the selection to the full unit it's enclosed in (word, sentence, paragraph) as you drag the selection larger). Nobody seems to like this new feature, so I recommend turning it off. I don't know why it's on by design. It's pretty annoying. Anyway, you can turn it off in Tools > Program Settings.

Dale this isn't a bug, it's the new "Smart Selection" "feature" Logos 6 introduced. See my comments about it in my post above. You can and will want to turn off that "feature" since you don't like it. I don't blame you, I don't like it either. I have yet to meet anyone who does.

I have tried turning smart selection off with no change to the problem. I agree that Smart selection is actually quite dumb in the way it acts.

Dale, is your problem similar to the one in the screencast that Bill posted here to demonstrate the bug he's seeing?
If it's different, could you post a screencast too? Jing is free pretty easy to use to record actions on screen (see also Alan Palmer's post here).

I'm having the same problems described above. Makes CBV unusable for me. For the record, I've turned off smart select. Still have the same problem. IF the CBV panel is closed, no problem. With it open, I get erratic results when trying to select text. It behaves AS IF smart select was still on.

Dumb question, but what is the CBV panel?

Dale Garman said:

"Copy Bible Verses" available from the Tools panel
(And apologies for using an acronym which wasn't clear)

thanks for the quick response. Followup question. I think that is the panel you get when you begin to highlight a section of text and right click? If so how would you copy without that panel opening if you wanted to retain the reference and the text formatting?

Dale Garman said:

No that is the "right-click menu"
The Copy Bible Verses tool is a separate panel - used to format text when copying to other applications

I'm was not aware of that panel and never used it. So my problem is not because that panel is open. I have always used the right click method on highlighted text. And the process of highlighting is where I cannot control what is highlighted

On first blush, it does seem improved (i.e., it hasn't happened in the 1st few minutes since closing that panel in my layout). I'll leave the panel closed (unless I need it) & will keep testing it without CBV open.
Thanks for the suggestion!

After an hour or so of use, seems improved, but still has problems... When problem occurs, same behavior as before--selects several pages down, with beginning of selection at end of where I tried to select. Still selecting text right & down... Smart Pick still OFF.

Another instance of the bug (new unwanted behavior with this release) is unchanged, near 100% failure:
- Select text.
- Highlight it.
- Press Shift & then attempt to extend the text (in order to extend the highlight) by left clicking at a later location.
- On left click, what SHOULD be the new end-of-highlight is the beginning, & new end-of-selection is several screens down.
Thanks for listening...

I can get to occur some of the time in ESV with Smart Text Selection
- select a paragraph e.g. Gen 26:12-16
- scroll selection off-screen
- Shift-click at start of a paragraph e.g. v. 23

I've got the same problem on my Macbook. I just closed the CBV panel and that seems to improve things (although often when I'm highlighting it's to use the CVB).

Does the problem go away if you disable all visual filters on the resource you are selecting? (if so, I'd love to know which visual filters were enabled)
0 -
Response to Alan's question: I still have the same problems. It's not always the same results--very inconsistent in its behavior--but the bottom line is that I cannot use the mouse to select ONLY the text I want to select. It jumps ahead to include many paragraphs or chapters. It also often "flips" as I extend the selection, so that at a certain point, everything above the cursor is deselected and several paragraphs below it are selected all at once.

I have tried this solution and it seems to work. Although then it disables one of the major features, at least as I understand it of keeping everything linked? Or is it for some other purpose? I can't really find a reference that describes what this feature is supposed to do. But I'm assuming this is still a bug and is only a temporary workaround?

It is for some other purpose.
"Links to open panels" provides the ability to identify where a place in one resource is referenced in another. For example, if you have a Bible open to a particular verse and are looking up a word in that verse in a lexicon, the verse indication in the lexicon will be highlighted making it easy to see how it is described. See example below
To actually link resources so that they scroll together you use Linking - https://wiki.logos.com/Linking_Resources
Dale Garman said:But I'm assuming this is still a bug and is only a temporary workaround?
Yes - this is correct

Graham is correct.
Personally, I would recommend disabling that visual filter in all resources and only turning it on in specific cases because it is a very aggressive visual filter with regard to how much work it performs.
0 -
Thanks so much. I'll use the workaround when copying verses until the bug gets fixed.

After working about 10hr yesterday in the same resource where I've been having problems, I can report that this fix helps with problem as I've previously reported them, but it doesn't completely eliminate all problems with selection. Random but numerous instances of some sort of selection "inversion" (the last part of the text selected seems to act as an anchor for several pages of text that I DIDN'T want to be selected instead).
Blessings on your effort to find & fix this annoying bug.

Alan, I have also posted here( https://community.logos.com/forums/t/100244.aspx) but will now just post and follow on this thread. The suggested fix seems to work for me as well, except if one decides to scroll down rather rapidly to make a selection. Then, as before the end point suddenly pivots to become the start point, or again, much more text is selected than one intended. But if I select slowly, the work around seems to indeed work. Thanks for this interim solution!
