You need to put quotes around "chief priests" otherwise Logos sees the space between search terms as an implicit "AND":
pharisee* OR "chief priests" OR ruler*
Without the quotes, Logos interprets it as ((pharisee* OR chief) AND priests) OR ruler*
Quotes are always necessary for phrase searches.
(Also, you can leave off the wildcards if you check "Match all word forms".)
