Update Logos 6 system requirements

Not infrequently users ask feedback from other users as to what would be a good computer purchase in relation to using Logos.

The underlying question of system requirements lurks behind as well as users experience performance issues. Does indexing take too long and the system freeze because more power is needed?

In light of this, I looked up the system requirements for the Logos 6 core engine and found them to be too brief to be useful:

To start with, when I see 2 GB of RAM, I wonder what kind of experience that would result in. It may work, but is this really functional? I don't know the answer to this question because I have more ram, noticed in the past a big improvement (in Logos 5) when I upgraded the default 2 GB my old laptop had come with (I have a different laptop now).

I notice also that there is nothing said about CPUs.

I have seen some software distinguish in their system requirements between "minimum" and "recommended". I think that something of the kind is needed for Logos. A blog with benchmarks for different systems could be very instructive!

For my part, I do wonder whether all the added features of Logos 6 and the more powerful searches mean that my laptop is starting to "fall behind" is terms of capability. I am sure that this would be pertinent to others as well.

The computer I use for beta testing only has 2GB of RAM and it runs Logos 6.1 without any problems. It's slow - as you would expect - but it's still functional, even for sermon preparation.

I think Bradley or Phil once answered that somewhere along the lines of "the sys requirements are equal to those for the OS version it runs on" and that beyond that, user experience varies wildly depending on size of the library and usage pattern.

The many threads about performance and buying advice show that to be the case - and beyond the point that SSD drives help a lot, especially in terms of indexing, there's no hard science regarding what is minimum, "okay" or a good configuration - and what user experience is satisfactory.

I don't buy that. It is not difficult to imagine doing better than this.

So, as a minimum, the Logos 6 requirements need to be updated to include at least as much.

It's slow - as you would expect - but it's still functional

Functional is a relative term. We may have at times to make do with a functional OS or a functional car, but clearly that speaks of a situation below normality (defined here as operating without a hitch most of the time as opposed to coughing and freezing whenever there is a big job in the queue). I think that most people, when they buy the software, hope for more than functional. So, they need to have at least a broad sense of what is needed to order to have a positive experience.

But Logos 5 had both Minimum and Recommended configurations listed, and Logos 6 goes back to only showing Minimum. That seems like a step backwards.
