Do you like "smart" select?

A few months ago Logos updated its databases so that one selects part of a verse the entire verse is selected. I find this to be a major pain in the you know where. How do the rest of you all see it? Do you like it? If so, I won't complain but frequently I just have to put up with the auto select (sometimes you just cannot defeat it no matter how hard you try) and then cut it back to what I wanted in the target program.

Nick, you could do what I and others who dislike this feature have done: disable it. You'll find the setting in Program Settings.

I wonder if it would be helpful for Logos to create a prompt asking if the user wants to turn smart select off if a user is spending a lot of time selecting a piece of text or tries to select the same piece of text 3 times in a row (indicating that he/she might be fighting against Smart Select)

The aforementioned bug is fixed in the latest SR as well as in the beta.

I'd also like to draw the OP and other readers of this thread to the fact that one can hold Alt (key may vary on Mac) to toggle smart select on/off as needed. This helps some users who find the feature helpful only some of the time.

I currently have it on for testing purposes and have discovered it doesn't get in my way as much as my initial experience with it led me to believe. In L5, I had turned it off almost immediately. I do not like it's parse routine's handling of certain punctuation which occurs more frequently in Bible oriented texts than normal texts.

However, I do like one side benefit of Faithlife coding for it - the choice between a word and a phrase in the right click menu.

No, I don't like it or use it (and I've tried to several times). I especially don't think it should be on by default (I reinstalled L6 a few days ago, and it switched smart selection back on. Grr.)

At first it felt like penance, or perhaps purgatory and I left it on just to marvel at--much like something the cat drug up to the front door , but now that I have the hang of the thing, I think it is a good idea just as it is.

Agree entirely. I switched it off after realising that Logos had an option to stop it selecting more text than I wanted, but I would echo the desire for it to be defaulted to "off".

As is to be expected ... for exactly the same reasons one uses the override in Microsoft - one may be correcting a simple reversal of letters, have a collocation you wish to make a note on rather than a phrase ...

If I were Faithlife my reasoning would be if Smart Select is turned off by default, most users will never discover the feature to their disadvantage if it works well, to development's disadvantage if it works poorly 'cause they won't hear the complaints. Therefore it is better to have it on by default and easy to turn off temporarily or permanently.

Yeah. That's the argument I will buy. I kinda agree. I used the same philosophy when I used to work in a kitchen. I never knew quite how much food poisoning was too much so the user feedback was quite helpful.

I often use for c&p of quotes to my notes files or other works. When it is not selecting as I would like, pressing ALT is simple enough.

On the whole I see smart select as a net positive to Logos.

I don't dislike Smart Select. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it's annoying. But it's easy enough to press ALT, and for me it saves more time than it wastes.

Count me among those that like it. It's very different when you're used to something working a certain way for so long, but I think the effect is more useful than not. A modifier that broke on words might be nice.

I think it's been mentioned by some before that they prefer the smart select on Windows tablets while preferring the traditional behavior on desktop. This seems like something that should be a local setting in order to allow that flexibility in choice.

I have the feature turned off in Logos. I often need to select a few words or phrases to copy. What makes that unworkable is that there is no way to back away from an automatically expended selection, as I do often in MS Word, where I can use the mouse to get back to where I was and select just the text I want, even only part of the word if that's what I need. If Logos had that ability, it would be useful.

I actually would prefer it to remain a local preference. I like it on my laptop when using its track pad, but tend to turn it off on my desktop when using a regular mouse.

I don't like it.

However, I do like it in Microsoft Word. But that's because Microsoft's version is "smarter." It will start smart selecting, but then if you move your mouse around a little, it will realize you don't want smart select, and will just turn it off for that word, so you can select part of the word. Plus, it only selects words, not whole sentences or paragraphs.

Ah yes, this probably does recycle the same smart selection tagging. Having an option like: "Text Selection Mode: MANUAL|Smart Select", with manual being the default, might be pretty cool.
