How to Join the Beta
Run the special beta installer here: http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/InstallerBeta/Logos4Setup.exe
Bradley, when I run this I get the message: "Logos Bible Software is up-to-date" Nothing else seems to happen and L4 reports 4.0a SR-2 for version number.
EDIT: Mine is already installing too now.
BTW, the update toolbar for L3 worked very, very fast for all my notes. I wonder what it actually did.

Based on the time estimates I am seeing, it isn't a complete index
From the notes: Added Bibles-only search index

Update was smooth. Imports all seemed to go quickly. No problems at this time. It is indexing now with about 59 minutes left.

First glance at notes importing isn't very pleasing.
Outlining is lost.
The old note title becomes the first line of the note text.
The new note title is the first few lines of the location of the note. If I had wanted to highlight that text, I would have added the note to a selection in the first place.
Font changed to Default everywhere, loosing my face and size settings.
Special symbols sometimes render as boxes.
Text color lost.
Spacing is tighter between paragraphs (but I actually prefer that).

Thanks for this, but if I have a lot of markup, the arrow button often appears not to work. I think it's not scrolling the page when the next markup is within ~10 lines from the top (the reference box is updating, but the screen doesn't realign to that verse). It was very confusing at first.

I don't plan on jumping on the beta until we reach the RC stage, but I have to admit that I really like some of the new features being added. I know a couple are ones that many (including myself) specifically asked for, and there are several that I think will be really nice. I didn't know I wanted them until I saw them! Good work guys! Look forward to seeing how the beta progresses.

Importing crashes on my computer. I get the "this program stopped working" message from Windows 7. It looks for a solution, does not find any and shut down Logos 4. I restarted the PC but it made no difference.

Mine also "crashed" during the import of the notes etc. It asked to do the M$ error report.
I re-bootef the PC and all was well - Favorites imported, highlighting available etc.

My indexing just finished but importing is taking a very, very long time, and synchronization is running continuously. I have 81 note files and I'm watching them come on my files list.Ah, the last one just finished.
The lesson is, don't import notes before indexing finishes, I guess.

Added Parallel Resource drop-down menu in resource toolbar
This looks pretty good, Bradley. However it seems incomplete at this time.
1. For example, there are no parallel resources for a number of my Greek lexicons (BDAG, ANLEX, LN, EDNT, Newman, TLNT, Lexham, etc). I have it on the TDNT and WSNTDICT but the results there are strange. It lists my collection Greek Lexicons but only six lexicons are listed (no scrolling). I have 18 resources in that collection.
The situation with my Hebrew lexicons is worse. I don't have many of them open, but my enhanced BDB shows parallel resources but just 2 of the 22 in my Hebrew Lexicons collection:
BTW: the way a Hebrew-Greek resource is handled is very nice. Example: NASB Hebrew-Aramaic-Greek Dictionaries which is a single volume:
You might also note that the Hebrew side reports a different set of resources than I got for the enhanced BDB.
I admit I don't know how Logos is generating these parallel resource associations, but if you are using my collections, there is something not working quite as expected, and in some cases not at all.
2. I also have no parallel associations for any of my Bible dictionaries: ABD, NBD, ISBE, Rev, etc.

I received a Run Time error when I clicked Finish at the end of the installation process.
However, the program opens fine and has finished indexing so I don't know if that is going to be a problem or not.

import highlighting
My highlights do import (thanks!).
However, there is no display on hover-over of the highlight name (as in L3). Also, not all of my highlight styles are present in the Highlighting drop-down. This means there are highlights I used to indicate something, but I can't always remember what it was. Nor am I able to continue to use the same styles in future work, since my highlighting schemes aren't imported.
So I'm glad it worked, but I'm disappointed it didn't work like I was hoping.

My notes did not import.
I followed the directions to upgrade my notes in L3.
I typed 'Import Notes' in the command bar and hit return. Nothing seemed to happen. I got no messages, and I have no new note files under my File menu.

Bradley,
It would be very nice if you could give even the shortest of descriptions on these new features. I can't find any of the "parallel resource toolbars" after opening a bunch of resources. It is very frustrating to have to play "find the needle in the haystack" to see if it works. You did not say which resources, where we should look to click, or how we would implement it. The result is frustration, that borders (to be honest) on "I don't really care what the feature is."
Please help.
By the way, what does this mean?
[quote]Resources support navigating by data type levels, highlighting, and search results
Sounds useful, but I have no idea what it means, and I am not about to play a guessing game for a couple of hours to figure it out. A nice two sentence description would be great, and save many people a lot of time.

I found that I had to have a resource open for a bit before the parallel button came up (syncing maybe?). You can see what it looks like below (the two parallel lines on the resource bar next to the three circle deal):
Probably the first place to look for this is with your Bibles.
Fred Greco said:Resources support navigating by data type levels, highlighting, and search results
See below for one example. There will be a new button next to the up/down arrow on the resource bar. Clicking on it tells you what levels are available to navigate by. Choose one and the up/down arrow will go to the next one of those. The example shows I've selected 'Highlight'. When I click on the down arrow it took me to the next highlighted text it found. This will be real handy for search results, restoring the capability we had in 3.0 to click thru search results.
This is not to say your suggestion to Bradley isn't a good one.

The "Parallel Resources" icon will only show up (in 4.0b Beta 1) if you have created a custom collection that includes the current resource. This may change in future beta releases.

Bradley, I just read through your warning. Can't respond there, so I'm asking here.
Do I read that it is safe to allow a 4.0a SR-2 machine to sync with a 4.0b B-1 machine?
The warnings about not sharing documents I take to refer to copying between machines, not syncing between machines.
Right?

Awesome, Bradley. Thank you! This has lots of important new features people have been asking for, and nice to see you guys are pretty much on track with the "missing features coming soon."
One question: has the ability to select and copy text from anywhere (search results, guides, resource info panels, etc.), like L3 could do, made it onto the "missing features coming soon" list internally? We'd love to see it on the web page so we can get an idea when to expect it. People keep asking for it. Here's the latest. And we'd like to assure them that yes the Logos people know about this request and are planning to put this feature back in...
Thanks!

I would still like to see the Logos Logo on the blue ribbon turned into an active link for the Logos homepage. It seems a most intuitive use of that logo and would be very useful. I've suggested it before but I don't think anybody has heard. What do others think?

Thank you, Richard. I discovered something interesting. While the About dialog displays 4.0a Beta 2, the build number is indeed 4.02.3.4945. In other words, this is 4.0b Beta 1, but unfortunately the Spanish UI misled me. I have started another thread asking how to revert to the English UI. I think that should fix this particular issue.

import notes
import highlighting

import all
(imports all three types listed above)
- Added Parallel Resource drop-down menu in resource toolbar
Starting to go through these. Imported notes and higlighting and made some observations in a couple of other posts.
Parallel resources do work. Very cool! However content of the same type are sometimes included in parallel sets where they don't occur. For example, I created a collection of Exegetical Commentaries and Homiletical Commentaries. I did not include the IVP Bible Background Commentary in either set. However when I look at that commentary the parallel resource button is on the tab and shows that it is connected to the Exegetical Commentary set. At least there is a check after Exegetical Commentaries on the drop down box on that tab (which contains many commentaries not included in that, or any collection).

Bradley Grainger said:Added Graph Search Results to Morph Search when all searched resources are Bibles
Haven't tried this yet.
Bradley Grainger said:Added “Speed search” to Bible search, which is now the default
This does work, but since it first looks for words in a 'word list' and then displays verse results, it is actually slower than regular search. Consider changing the name to "Search as you type."
Bradley Grainger said:Added an “Update to current snapshot” context menu option to saved layouts, which replaces the saved layout with the current layout.
Love this! One of the first features I used. Worked perfectly, and as designed.

Works as designed. This was an issue with a visually impaired person on the forums just a few days ago. Thanks!

Not sure how to test this. I assume this is supposed to make Bible searches faster. Is there a benchmark we could run?

Yep. Nice font too.

Haven't tested this yet, but I'm not one who's used Favorites a lot in the past (never had any in L3).
Bradley Grainger said:Copy Bible Verses Global Shortcut is now shown in Program Settings
Yes, and it looks like it can be changed there (three options), or disabled.
Bradley Grainger said:Changed layout of reference range picker in Bible Search, Morph Search, and Reading Plan
Looks pretty similar (at least) to what was before. Reference ranges still save automatically, regardless of clicking "Save."
Bradley Grainger said:Each unique term in a search query is now highlighted with a different color
Nice. Do you notice that this highlighting disappears when hovering over the verse so that the full verse is displayed?
Bradley Grainger said:Input boxes will try to provide valid Bible reference ranges instead of doing nothing (e.g. “mt 28:18-22” will parse to Mt 28:18-20)
Works great! I tried Psalm 152 and it showed me Psalm 150. Clicking ENTER (with Psalm 152 in the address box) puts me at Psalm 150:1.
Bradley Grainger said:User-defined collections now have their own section (separate from Series) in Search range picker
Nice. Had to scroll a little to find them but there they are, just above all the 'MyTag' entries.
Bradley Grainger said:Implicit Series are now included as options in the Cited By panel menu (disabled by default)
I think I know what you mean by implicit series. Are these defined by an algorithm, or are they tagged as series in the Library?

There's a new menu on the Resource toolbar where you can select data type, and then the new Up/Down arrows next to it will navigate through your resource by that unit. Also if you do a Find within a resource, you can click the up/down carets (shouldn't they be arrows too, for consistency?) to get to the next/prev search result. People have been asking for these enhancements. Great new feature(s)! Thanks!

I solved my problem. I have installed the Beta under a different user name. Under that user name I had no annotations in the My Documents folder. I copied my annotations to a new Libronix DLS/Annotations folder under the Beta user account and the import worked just fine. I mention this because others who install under a separate account for Beta testing may run into the same problem.

Amazingly...I have not (as far as I can remember) had a single crash in any Beta since about Beta five of Logos 4.0 (that's a lot of Betas NOT to have a crash). I am truly blessed to use Logos and to "play" with these new features! I love the new parallel resources and being able to scroll via Book, Chapter, Verse, highlight, Search!!!!!
