SOLVED: Searching agent and specifying activity [USE CLAUSE SEARCH]

I am trying to search for all of the times where Jesus is praying in Luke. The following search seems to work, but it is also highlighting every time Jesus is the agent of other verbs. Is it possible to specify in this way?

An actual Bible search and not an inline.

Here the problem is more apparent.

Yes!! Thank you. I have not used the clause search. Now that I see how it works I will use it more.

Thank you, Brian, for asking, & thank you, MJ, for your answer! Until your question, Brian, I didn't understand why I wanted to know how to use clause searches. And MJ, in your answer I see something I can easily use!

    Again, thank you both!

MJ, is there a Hebrew resource that also works for clause searches?

It is the LHB but "Lord" isn't a valid subject in it.

If you enter "subject:lord" you will get a dropdown of possible matching entries and you need to select one from those

Graham beat me, but the red book is a warning that the query will fail ... in this case the tag for speaker is wrong as Graham said but it is simple to check what the speaker should be

    Thank you, MJ & Graham,

So why does the one you tried work (on picture at right) & the one I tried (on picture at left) not work? I picked from the menu, each time.

I don't know why they chose to tag it with the verb they did ... it may be an error so I'll start another thread.

    MJ,

Thank you so very much for helping me get started with clause searches. This really opens new possibilities for research, & I REALLY, REALLY appreciate it.

    Thanks again,

This Clause Search may get you even closer:

agent:Jesus (verb-sense:to pray OR verb-sense:to pray (petition) OR verb-sense:to intercede)

"Agent" requires the Case Frame dataset included in Logos 6. It's superior to using subject for these sorts of searches because it disentangles the semantics (broadly speaking, "meaning") of the clause from its grammatical form.

"Verb-sense" refers to the Bible Sense Lexicon sense, and is superior to "verb" (which is a synonym for "verb-gloss", which is an English proxy for "verb-lemma" ie, one Greek or Hebrew word) also because it searches for a semantic unit of meaning rather than for a particular word. The neat thing about the senses si that they're hierarchical, so if you search for a broader sense (eg, "to pray (petition)") it will include narrower senses (eg, "to pray <-> to beg") as well. In this case, the BSL lists several high-level senses of prayer, "to pray" and "to pray (petition)" and "to intercede" so I want to use OR to match any of them.

Using senses includes results from several Greek lemmas: προσεύχομαι "to pray", ἐντυγχάνω "to appeal", and δέομαι "to ask, beg".

    Hope that helps!

Thank you. This is very helpful.

I see that the LXX is available for Clause searches, but that "agent" doesn't appear to work there. Will this be added later? It would be nice to be able to search them both together.

Brian, the LXX in Clause Search only includes the subset of the OT in Swete's LXX that are not also in the Hebrew Bible, that is, the "apocrypha" or "deuterocanon." The Case Frame dataset, where "agent" comes from, does not cover the deuterocanonical books. No official word on when they will be included or on getting the entire LXX (including the books that overlap w/Hebrew) into Clause Search.

    BillS,

agent:God (verb-sense:to order OR verb-sense:to appoint (duty) OR verb-sense:to set in order )

Garners 22 hits in Isaiah, and includes some interesting things like summoning (Isa 13:3; 41:4, 19), mustering (Isa 13:4), and appointing (Isa 60:17).
