SUGGESTION for a future “Classic Studies in Preaching Collection” CP
Ran across a great quote from John Henry Jowett today:
“I have a conviction that no sermon is ready for preaching … until we can express its theme in a short, pregnant sentence as clear as crystal. I find the getting of that sentence is the hardest, the most exacting and the most fruitful labor in my study.… I do not think any sermon ought to be preached, or even written, until that sentence has emerged, clear and lucid as a cloudless moon.… [Then] there will be no danger of unscrupulous text-twisting.… The word of God will dominate our mind, set fire to our hearts, control the development of our exposition and later leave a lasting impression on the congregation.”[1]

That is a great quote. Noting the classic works quoted by modern homileticians may be a great way to discover which works to give attention to in the formation of new classic bundles. Great suggestion.

I would endorse the above and add: The Power of the Pulpit: Thoughts addressed to Christian ministers and those who hear them by Gardiner Spring which has been reprinted by both Banner of Truth and more recently, SGCB.

Another one: John Brown - Hints to Students of Divinity (Logos already have his commentaries)
His memoir by John Cairns also contains a lot of helpful hints on preaching:
"It is of radical importance to you that your views be not only consistent with, but derived from a careful exegesis of the 'words which the Holy Ghost teachest'...it has been my sincere desire to bring out of the inspired words what is really in them, and to put nothing into them that is not really there'.

One book described as 'an old standard on the pastor's office' is Hezekiah Harvey - The Pastor: His Qualifications and Duties. It's referenced extensively in David Campbell's 'Handle that new call with care'. It is also cited in Dockery (ed.) Southern Baptists, Evangelicals, and the Future of Denominationalism (2011) which says that Harvey was 'a prolific Baptist pastor and professor at Hamilton Theological Seminary'.
