It seems that Logos activates the dGPU on my MBPr.  Is there a reason the dGPU is needed over the iGPU?

Someone else mentioned the same thing a while back. You can control which GPU to use by downloading the free GfxCardStatus utility. You can download it from https://gfx.io/.

This app has not been able to select the card for some while (since Mountain Lion?). It can tell you what app is causing the need for the discrete card ... but it can only monitor.

back in the days of ML I forced Logos to use the integrated card ... And found it was OK most of the time ... Except for the transitions into reading mode ... But it did make L4 even more sluggish Than normal. I gave up using the app and took the battery life hit.

I'm using this on Mavericks and it works perfectly. When the discreet card is in use the utility can't force it to switch to integrated, but before the discreet card kicks in, one can select integrated and in this way "lock" it into that state. I really don't notice any mentionable difference in performance, but then I'm running on a late 2013 (all solid state) laptop with 16Gb ram and a 2.6GHz i7.

Thanks for the replies.  I can't imagine why Logos would need the dGPU over the iGPU.  If there truly is no reason then it would be great if Faithlife made some code changes as I always have Logos open therefore the dGPU is always being used.

Here is a quote from Bradley from this thread: https://community.logos.com/forums/p/104050/719466.aspx#719466

"The GPU is used for hardware-accelerated rendering in some areas of the program. (Given that Logos 6 isn't a bleeding-edge 3D game, and given the good performance of even low-end graphics cards these days, I'd guess it'd be unlikely that there would be noticeable differences between different GPUs.) "

Not sure how this translates into iGPU versus dGPU??
