Community pricing: Catena Aurea - Commentary on the Four Gospels, Collected Out of the Works of the

Since we're in the mood for plugging community pricing products these days, I'd like to put in a plug for this 8 Volume classic Pastristic commentary on the gospels, collected by St. Thomas Aquinas from the works of over eighty Church Fathers. Translated by John Henry Newman, containing 2,784 pages, it will be a bargain even at the high end of the community pricing scale. Current average is running about $20 with just under 40% of development costs covered. Let's see if we can boost it up to over 50% so it starts gaining more momentum. I know Martha (MJ Smith) has been longing for this work for some time. Can we help her achieve her dream by pitching in as a community? Smile

I'm in too. We need someone to lobby other Logos members for these resources. How about a post along the lines of "5 Reasons Catholics Should Bid on this Resource" and "5 Reasons a Protestant Should Bid on this Resource"

4. It's edited by Thomas Aquinas. Even though he was a Catholic, he was a pretty important guy. He was a big influence on people Protestants love: Dante, G.K. Chesterton, R.C. Sproul, Norman Geisler, and all these people, too. (Incidentally, that link will get you to an amazing website to explore: Freebase, with its awesome genealogy of influence.)

5. The "Church Fathers" are not some scary bunch of dead white males that only Catholics read. The ones Aquinas cites include the biggies like Origen, Augustine, Bede, Alcuin, Jerome, Ambrose, Cyril of Alexandria, Eusebius, etc. Any educated Christian should become familiar with these heavyweights, as they shaped many of the theologians who have shaped us. We stand on the shoulders of giants. It pays to look down once in a while and get to know the faces of those giants whose shoulders we stand on.

EDIT: You might say "why should I pay for it in Logos format if it's available for free online"? Count up the other resources that are available for free online: NIV, KJV, NRSV, etc.; then you've got several one-volume commentaries, Bible dictionaries, and more. Lots of public domain stuff. You can get it on various sites like http://www.biblestudytools.com/. So why did you buy Logos in the first place? Don't you love the ease of access, the nice user interface, all the interlinking between resources? Well, it's worth having good books in Logos format. It sells new for a list price of 225.00 (discounted to $175.68 on Amazon.com). Community pricing range has it for anywhere from $8 to $40, and the more people order it, the lower the price goes. Plus it will be in Logos format, not dead-tree format. It's worth doing this for posterity.

For me this is a no-brainer. Where else can one get this amount of research from this many theological heavyweights in this condensed format covering all 4 gospels for this amount of money? And the fact that it will forever become a part of my Logos library...unbelievable! (I'm thinking about creating another username with Logos just so I can make a second bid [;)] )

This Lutheran pastor just bumped his earlier bid from $36.00 to $40.00. I'd probably be willing to go higher. Any compiliation of the Church Fathers would contain valuable material no matter the ecclesiastical tradition one is anchored in.

C'mon, folks. It's not called the Golden Chain for nothing. This is an invaluable resource for a study of the way that the Early Church Fathers used, and understood, scripture.

At this price it is a steal. It's worth its weight in gold. [;)]
