A good opportunity to test the download as my out-of-date Verbum installaltion needed a 1.25 GB update (no auto-download).

  • Use beta download link to get v6.3 Beta 4
  • Went offline and changed to Auto-download between 10pm and midnight
  • Bug?: Went back online but there was no notification of a download
  • Switch to No-auto in Settings and saw link to download 1.25 GB
  • Bug: Switch to Auto-download @ 9.40pm, see "checking for updates..." and download commences.
  • Cancel download and indexing 1 begins (log-1)
  • Enter update now with indexing @ 47% and download of 1.21 GB commences
  • First indexing completes
  • Cancel download @ 43% and indexing 2 begins (log-2)
  • Switch to No-auto download & see link to download 851.8 MB; but
  • Bug: there is no visible notification
  • Second indexing completes
  • Enter update now and get visible notification of 851.8 MB download
  • Allow download and cancel @ 57%
  • Indexing 3 begins (log lost)
  • change PG from Eph 5:25 to Mt 25:1-13
  • On hover get following notifications
    • Resources are ready to be added to your library
    • Update of 528.2 MB is available
    • Library is indexing
  • Allow download @ 20% indexing
  • On hover get following notifications
    • Resources are ready to be added to your library
    • Downloading 528.2 MB
    • Preparing Library
    • Library is indexing
  • Pause Indexing and see following on hover
  • Bug: missing line feeds
  • On cliclking the icon (this was earlier than previous screen shot)
  • Bug: why have "Pause indexing" when it is already paused?
  • Resume indexing at 99% download complete
  • Download completes whilst still indexing
  • Indexing 3 completes and Indexing 4 begins (log-4) - but log 3 is overwritten
  • Indexing 4 completes and only notification is
    • Resources are ready to be added to your library
  • Manually restart Verbum (losing the Verbum log!!)
  • After a long pause (see restart log) Indexing 5 starts (log-5)

The restart was for LLS 29.1.24 &  LLS:LBD. The first was also involved in a previous restart indexing presumably because it was involved in the PG for Mt 25. The second was one of many dictionaries in Factbook.

Summary

  1. Auto-Download didn't respect the download time schedule
  2. Cancelling downloads and pausing indexing worked as expected
  3. Update notifications correctly showed every event at various stages (with two minor bugs)
  4. The Update pipeline wasn't phased by the 'disruptions'
  5. Emphasizes the need to retain all indexing logs for a single session
  6. Introduces the need to retain the main Logos/Verbum log when being restarted for indexing!

Thanks, Dave. I'm looking through this. It will take me a bit to come back with a more detailed response.

This should be unchanged from 6.2 and earlier releases. The available download notification is only displayed if auto-update is turned off.

Currently the update system treats an explicit preference change (either through the program settings panel or with a command) as an explicit user request for an update. All explicit user requests for an update ignore the download window setting. This also occurs when changing the application update channel. We're going to go ahead and change this so that all update requests respect the download window except for use of the "update now" and "update resources" commands.

It is a bug that turning off auto-updates does not show the yellow application notification (it only shows the download notice in the settings panel). This will be fixed in the next beta.

We have an open case for this issue. I'll add a link to this thread.

I've created cases for fixing these bugs.

Obviously, I don't normally use auto-download! But I was expecting a notification for a scheduled download e.g. "An Update of 1.25GB will begin at 10pm" (and the download size changes as necessary).
