I open "Search".
The directive says "Search [All_Text] in [All_Resources] for"...
I want it to say "Search [All_Text] in [Bible_Commentaries] for"...
That is not even a choice. Why not, or what am I missing here?
Thanks and God bless.
You need to create a collection first. You can use the syntax type:commentary.
Here is a wiki on collections: https://wiki.logos.com/Collections
Here is a wiki on searches: https://wiki.logos.com/Basic_Search
PS - You might be able to find what you are looking for more easily if you take the bucket off your head. [;)]
You can also create collections on the fly if you don't want to save it. Change All Text in Entire Library to All Text in type:commentary, select "xxx resources with type:commentary" and then enter the search terms in the reference box. Screenshots for reference are below.
Thanks to both you kind folks. Notwithstanding the bucket on my head, I perceive (perhaps falsely) that if I search "all resources", it is more useful than searching "everything", since it would return matches for books that I actually have in my personal library, and not return things that I don't.
When I try to search using type=Basic, and the directive for "all text" in "all resources", and the search string is: type:commentary Roman
I get nothing. But at the same time, if I use Tools / Passage / Explorer, and pull up some random passage, in the Explorer tab I can open "More" under "Commentaries", and see that I have sever commentaries to choose from, at least 40 or so. So to assume that I have no bible commentary word "Roman" seems a bit odd. I think that the "type:commentary" search code is not working for me. Maybe I'm using it in the wrong context.
This seems like it would be so useful to be able to search your commentary collection. I guess everyone has to cobble together all their commentaries into a formal collection to search them, even though the "Type" is set to "Bible Commentary" on them.
Actually I just looked a little closer at that screenshot and think I got it. There is this third way to adjust the search that I wasn't aware of til now. Thanks!
Searching "All Text" in type:commentary resources can find many Roman uses. Searching "Heading Text, Large Text, Title" can find articles:

OK I can't get this working now. I KNOW it's not my program malfunctioning... but IMHO this user interface needs to be more straightforward. I should be able to search my commentaries for a passage. What am I missing.
Step 1. I open the Search tool with the magnifying glass icon. By default it says "Search Everything for" with a box.Step 2. The "Everything" is a pull-down, but I can't just select "bible verses" or "commentaries" no. It's useless. I get that. Leave it.Step 3. So instead I type in the box "type:commentary". If I click on what I entered in the box, a pulldown appears, but, I don't see any choice to select my thousands of commentaries... oh no. Instead it says "Commentary" or "Commentary Topic", commentarylike, etc. Weird stuff. Useless.Step 4. In the box, next to "type:commentary", I type the range, "<Bible Ezek 37:24>" (as the example in the dropdown). It spits back search results "0 results" in categories of "The NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION", "FACTBOOK", "TOPIC Commentary", "LIBRARY RESOURCES", "MEDIA", etc. More information that is useless.I'm pulling my hair out. Can't they just make the program easy to use? PLEASE?

Is this what you are trying to do?
Oh wow. Now I see "Search All Text in All Resources for" and then box has "<Bible Ezek 37:24>". I don't know how I got that I wish I could retrace my steps. Observation. You put "type:commentary" in the dropdown of "All Resources", not in the text box.

As did every other screenshot in this thread.
To get "All Text" you have to click on "Everything and select "All Resources". OK I guess if you know that already then you know that. Then only, you can click on "All Resources" and filter it for type:commentary. Thanks for bearing with me.
... not so constructive comments. The first screenshot actually appeared to have it in the text box, as the drop down box is shown overlapping the main text box, which was probably my primary confusion.

Sedes,
sorry if my remark came accross as not constructive. I understood your post as if you thought something different was presented than before, which wasn't the case, so you might have overlooked some of the help a Faithlife employee and several forum MVP had offered you. Sometimes it's difficult to gauge the level of help someone needs in an answer.
Search is one of the most powerful functionalities in this software (many bible study software programs will not be able to produce a search that answers the complex idea you had). It is most helpful to look careful at screenshots and note the details where inputs are given, which kind of search is selected etc.
Many people get more comfortable with Logos by watching it in action in a training video rather than having textual descriptions with a couple of screenshots. Many of these are linked from the wiki: https://wiki.logos.com/ - especially the official feature tutorials may be helpful https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXkjd_l1xkSQ5fM605M-F5xikKNGBdPvj (collections & search everywhere are related to this thread)
Sorry I misinterpreted it. It was like 3AM in my timezone and I was not thinking straight. Thanks for your input. My problem is probably that I wasn't aware that the pulldown has another input box, and that these two input boxes are meant for different thinks, some filters can be added to one box, other filters to the other box. It is a confusing interface for those who are not used to using it. Ordinarily I don't filter my searches, I just search for some string in an open resource. I guess this thread represents the first couple times I had to get more creative to search commentaries for a certain passage or string. The interface could be more intuitive for first-time users, but on the other hand I'll probably not forget my lesson that I've learned here now. God bless.
