[unresolved]PLEASE do something about the mouse freezes!

This issue has been reported multiple times already but to my knowledge (and certainly in my experience) has not been addressed. The mouse freezes during indexing, often for 5-10 minutes at a time. I can't always wait to download at night if I need a resource now and it is actually more time efficient to index while doing something else on the computer. But the mouse freezes (nothing else). There is only so much that can be done using keyboard shortcuts and tabbing around.

The indexing process priority is already set to low, yet I can hear my fan go on when I index. My laptop is 2 years old, with an i5 processor and 8 gb of RAM, plenty of HDD space.

Have you tried putting a heating pad in the mouse cage? [;)]

Perhaps more appropriate, as I only experience momentary freezes, I would suggest sending Logos a sample of one of the long freeze might be necessary for the developers to track it down.

Two problems with your suggestion:

Running a sample during a freeze requires some gymnastic, since the mouse is not available to select commands.
Logos does not freeze; it causes my laptop mouse to freeze. I am not sure whether sampling would help here.

I might still give it a try if I can remember to set up the sampling tool ahead of time the next time I am about to download and install new resources.

As for your other suggestion, Samson might have made a riddle of the fact that more heat causes computers to freeze:

"When it is hot, it freezes; When it cooled, it no longer is: What is it?" Perhaps I could propose it on the forums and see if I get 30 new resources out of it?

Do you recall when you first noticed this problem?

I experience the cursor/pointer locking up while using Verbum on one of my computers and thought it was a system issue as I do not have the problem on another computer.

The install without the problem is Logos 5 stable, on Windows 8.0.

The install with the problem is Verbum 6 stable, originally Verbum 5.3 beta, on Windows 7.

No, I don't recall when I first noticed the problem. However, I have 3 computers with Windows 8.1 running Logos desktop 6 (stable versions only) and all 3 are liable to this.

Also, am I imagining things or is Logos update loading in the background even when the program is not run? I have noticed in the last while that the program starts with "updating library" as if new resources/updates had downloaded already. I am not totally sure of this though, just wondered if someone else noticed something like that.

Background updating is in the current beta but not yet released to the stable channel. Which version are you running?

Background updating is in the current beta but not yet released to the stable channel. Which version are you running?

6.2 and earlier versions of the application would download in the background while the application was not running. You can tell this is happening by hovering your mouse over the Logos application icon in the system tray.

6.3 will only download while the application is running.

Well, then I will look forward to the 6.3 stable release. This is good to know. However, the mouse freeze problem is another one and it has been a problem well before this.

My desktop mice don't have this problem, so I don't regard it as a Logos issue (similar to CPU overheating under stress).

Have you tried updating the drivers, swapping ports, or swapping a borrowed mouse for yours?

Dave, thanks the reply but (1) as I mentioned, this affects several computers (all different brands and configurations), so it is unlikely to be a hardware problem and (2) I am not the only one who has had this problem (this was mentioned in another, past thread -- I don't remember where).

Have you checked for and installed the latest drivers?
Do you have any mouse-related software installed (anything from Microsoft IntelliMouse to Synergy)?
Does plugging a regular bare-bones no-frills USB mouse into the computer make the problem "go away"?

I must underline that this problem only ever happens, on all three computers, while Logos indexes. It does not happen otherwise.

Ah, now you've made the problem familiar - I've also assumed, since the freeze is temporary, that it is simply a matter of insufficient computing resources and that I have to wait to get the computer's attention. I think of it as computer hyper-concentration which seems to happen when the indexing is transferring the temporary indices into permanent indices
