[ACK] BUG: screwed up "order" of label attributes

I am perfectly capable of entering label attributes in the order in which I want them to appear - an order with logic and meaning. However, Logos prefers to be illogical and random - presenting the attributes to me not in my sequence nor in alphabetic sequence. This is not cool at all and Phil just told me we had cool features coming.

Label properties are unordered by design, that is, intentionally.

We consider searching the primary usefulness of labels (maybe you disagree). The process for matching a label is rooted in set math. Thus, we normalize the order of property names and values within labels by sorting them before storage or retrieval.

To maintain a user-specified order in a label would require us to store and maintain data with the label that is specific to the label's presentation and not its content, namely a list position for each key-value pair. It would also require UI to re-order properties within the label entry and editing popup. Not that this would be especially difficult; we even considered doing it for L6 but decided against it to streamline the implementation and UI.

That said, designs can always be wrong. I will add this as a suggestion for future improvement.

Dave, the speed of the auto-completer in label entry (and elsewhere in the app) annoys me, too. It's on our list of things to improve as well.

All that said, I really don't understand the ordering of properties that is shown in that label prompt. It does look fairly random as opposed to what I would expect, which is sorted alphabetically by property name.

From my perspective, it is much easier to enter multiple attributes if they appear in the same sequence every time and even more so if that sequence has a rationale. Going back to the Hebrew laws which is where you suggested the use of labels, in TaRYaG: A study of the Tracition that the Written Torah Contains 613 Mitzvot by Rabinowitz, six sources in addition to Maimonides are given. If I were to tag the Mitzvot with their presence or absence in the other lists it would be much easier to do if the 6 additional sources always appeared in the same sequence as in the text. And easier to see on mouse over if the location was always fixed.

While I agree that a search is their primary use, a search implies three additional chair-to-keyboard functions:

entering the label data
viewing the label data to build the appropriate search
verifying the results of the search

I went to look at this situation but couldn't reproduce your results.

I created my labels in order and they worked.
I then tried to copy your screenshot exactly and all of the items showed in order matching the creation order.
I went and edited an existing label value and the order still stayed the same.

Can you please help me find steps that will help us recreate the issue?

5-11 are defined as numeric, the others are text

Then I start filling with the information from the following Wikipedia table:

Traditions:

S: Septuagint, generally followed by Orthodox Christians.
P: Philo, same as the Septuagint, but with the prohibitions on killing and adultery reversed.
T: Jewish Talmud, makes the "prologue" the first "saying" or "matter" and combines the prohibition on worshiping deities other than Yahweh with the prohibition on idolatry.
A: Augustine follows the Talmud in combining verses 3–6, but omits the prologue as a commandment and divides the prohibition on coveting in two and following the word order of Deuteronomy 5:21 rather than Exodus 20:17.
C: Catechism of the Catholic Church, largely follows Augustine.
L: Lutherans follow Luther's Large Catechism, which follows Augustine but omits the prohibition of images^[17] and uses the word order of Exodus 20:17 rather than Deuteronomy 5:21 for the ninth and tenth commandments.
R: Reformed Christians follow John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion, which follows the Septuagint.
