[resolved] Laptop & Desktop

I have Logos 6 installed on desktop SSD, and it runs well. I also have it on my laptop to take on the move, but the laptop is not so fast. Is there a way to reduce the library on the laptop to make performance more acceptable? I tried hiding resources, but that deleted the files from my desktop too.

I don't think what you are asking can be done. The application syncs with other installations, so what is done on one computer will be reflected on the other. I'm sure someone much more knowledgeable than me will come by to advise you and give more details.

Yasmin is correct that you have visibility of the same resources on all platforms running Logos 6 (there are ways of having different resources visible on different platforms but they are not supported and not easy to manage)

But it is not necessarily the case that having access to more resources will impact performance.

How many resources do you have, what are the specs of your laptop, what sort of performance issues are you seeing?

The laptop is definitely not high-end. Running Windows 8 on AMD A6 1.8GHz, 8GB RAM, C drive has almost 800GB free (less than 25% used)

Logos 6 was installed to default directory, library is 30GB

It will do searches, but I have to be patient, and wait for the [Not responding] message to disappear about 40 sec. It's certainly disc access that's the bottleneck... it's 100% during this process. CPU is handling it fine.

Does hidden resources also sync? Otherwise you could hide unnecessary resources on the laptop.

Yes they do - so hiding on the laptop will cause them to be hidden on the desktop

Given the amount of free space I can't imagine that a modern HD would perform this poorly. Is it still under warranty?

Provide an example of a search that does this and how long it takes, together with some logs.

The ONLY way that is possible, is to make sure L6 never connects to the internet, and then hide the resources. Since that isnt a good option, you will have to look for relief elsewhere.

Yes, that wouldn't work. Then I wouldn't see the new books. I just added the May specials this morning... love NT Wright's stuff. Maybe I should stop buying new books? Guess that's not a good option either.

One of my computers is similar but with worse CPU, it has a hybrid drive. If You want to get away as cheap as possible I'd recommend a hybrid drive with 16 GB SSD part although it won't be much cheaper than upgrading to an SSD. But with the hybrid drive I experience a significant increase in performance, although with the amount of books You have You won't experience the same performance boost since the index won't fit on the SSD part (I have an 8 GB SSD part).
If You also want to save battery, go with an SSD as they barely consume any electricity compared with a HDD, hybrid drive or dual drive (the latter is not at all the same thing as a hybrid drive).
If/when You've installed an SSD, remember never to defrag it!
I don't think You should get rid of the computer, the CPU is decent and very stable. If You do get rid of it, get an AMD again, research comparative benchmarks!
Poor performance may be due to using Logos a lot, the more settings You have in it some of the settings impact performance a lot.
If there are any books You can hide You can do that if You find the process itself of hiding books to be worth Your time. You can look at for example what You got through base-packages or huge bundles. For example I just hid Lange's commentary set the other day and I was thinking of hiding the Utley outlines:

I'm not currently planning to upgrade the laptop. I do have other Bible software (without a library) that will work fine on it, but I had expected I could run the same software across both. Not to worry... maybe in a future release.

Can you provide a description of a search which is slow to return results and a log taken at the same time as running the search?

EDIT: The log, to me, seems to be demonstrating some very strange behaviour and I can't work out what is going on.

Suggest you wait until someone with more expertise can have a look in more detail

OK, trying again. This time I have opened to my usual reading layout in 2 Peter, performed an inline search for 'a godly life' within the current resource. (That's fine). Then repeated the same inline search in everything. (That's when I get to wait for the program to respond)

It was an inline search - highlighted 'a godly life' in NIV, right click and selected 'Search', 'everything' from the popup.

It's not actually an "inline search" - they are strictly within a resource (which is why I was confused by your description) - but I know what you mean know.

A couple of things:

the searches in your second set of logs seemed to complete in a reasonable length of time - were you still seeing delays?
Is it only with "everything" search you have a problem with delays?
