[resolved] Logos 6 slow or sluggish response - Win 8, 8GB RAM

I've had this issue ever since I got Logos 6, and it's not a fatal problem, but it's a bit annoying.

Basically Logos 6 seems to be just a bit slow or sluggish at everything.

I've spent ages on the forums, and seen lots of people discussing it, but no solution has been offered.

It doesn't matter whether I have two resources open or ten resources open. Whenever I click on the tabs at the top of the screen to switch from one resource to another, it takes about half a second for the new resource to display. It's not a long time, really, but it's significantly slower than it takes to switch between various tabs on google chrome, for example, which is instant, even when I have 10 tabs open.

Similarly, even when I have 10 word processing documents open in Libreoffice, switching between them is instant. But switching between resources on Logos is just realy clunky and sluggish.

In addition, closing a resource tab in Logos is even slower than switching between them, and when I click the library icon, it takes even longer to load up the library drop-down menu.

Basicaly, Logos 6 is the slowest thing on my computer! Which is a shame, because I love it, and want to use it more, without getting frustrated with it.

I'm just wondering if this is normal in Logos 6, or if something can be done to bring it up to speed?

I don't think it's a RAM problem, since I have 8GB, and Task manager shows my memory sitting at 40%, with Logos (2 resources open), Chrome (3 tabs), and a few office documents open.

Also CPU and HDD are at 5% each.

I don't think it's a HDD problem, because I have 135GB free space, 0% fragmentation (I have weekly disk optimisation/defrags scheduled).

An ideas?

It would be interesting to monitor disk throughput when trying various things in Logos and see whether you are hitting any bottlenecks there.

With Logos being an I/O intensive program many people have found that a 5400rpm disk is a real limiting factor.

I expect that replacing your disk with an SSD would make a significant difference in performance but I don't know how feasible that would be for you. And with the amount of space you are using on your HDD getting an SSD of that size would be quite a challenge.

This is a slowest part of a good machine but you can report its speed by using HD Tune (free).

Dave, I actually was meaning that switching between resources that are already opened/loaded takes longer than expected. I have no problem waiting a bit to open up a new resource - in fact, opening new resources seems very quick to me. But once the resource is open, and presumably loaded into the RAM, I wouldn't expect it to be as slow as it is to merely switch between windows/tabs.

I did a bit of a test just now, and to close a resource took about 1 second of lag, which is much slower than closing a tab on chrome (instant) or closing a word document (instant).

Also to open the library drop-down menu takes about second too.

The thing is, once I have done an action once, like opening the library drop down menu, I would expect the needed information to be in the RAM, and for things to run smoothly.

And once a resource is loaded up, surely Logos doesn't need to access my HDD to open the window with it in - surely it's all loaded into RAM already? I just can't see why it is so much more sluggish than chrome or my word processor.

Also I downloaded HD Tune. What sort of test should I do?

Brett, as Graham mentions, the SSD is your best bet. Plus given you've read the various forum threads, I'm guessing you're more than curious.

You'd do well to get something like SysInternals Process Explorer, which you can watch various aspects of Logos at program and thread level (you likely already have).

Anyway, the norms of what you expect don't always play out and it's not easy to see how they're buffering text blocks, menus, etc. I operate with about 120 resources open, so I watch what happens with page, line-down, linking, connects to the the internet, etc. Slowly, I figure out what not to do. Right now, the highlighter is super-slow ... next update, it'll be something else.

Actually, I figured out that the time it takes to switch between open resources/tabs depends on the size of the resource.

So if I open up a few small books, I can switch between them instantly, which is nice.

But switching to a large resource, like a Bible dictionary (huge tomes when in print), or even a Bible, takes more time.

So I guess it's just a result of Logos taking more time to load up a larger resource.

Using Windows Resource manager, I do also notice some HDD activity when I switch between open tabs on Logos, and the HDD activity increases with the size of the resource and with the amount of delay that I am noticing.

This suggests that the slowness may indeed be linked to my HDD as suggested.

But I still don't understand why the resource is not already loaded up in the RAM for instant access - and why the HDD even needs to be accessed at all, when I'm just switching between already-opened resources. It seems strange to me, but then, I'm no expert.

It's not something that I'm going to spend money to fix, so I don't think I'll buy an SSD, but thanks for the suggestion

I was just hoping that there was some sort of tweak that would smooth things out.

I guess I'll just accept that Logos is clunky compared to the rest of my programs - but hey, it's still a lot quicker than going to the bookshelf, finding the book you want, bringing it back to the desk, opening it...

It's worth noting that visual filters can slow down Logos opening and closing tabs, particularly custom visual filters. If you have visual filters turned on, I'd try turning them off to see if it makes a difference.

I wasn't using much in the way of visual filters, no 'links to open panels', which I've heard can slow things down, and no custom filters (I don't even know how to use those yet).

I did a test and unchecked all the visual filters in the resources, but I still didn't notice any improvement in speed when switching between open resources. So I don't think it's that.
