The similar resources tab - a great feature

but, is there a way of getting another PLUS SIGN or something similar that would allow a drop-down list (like the similar resources "plus sign") of COMMENTARIES in your library that contain references to the PASSAGE which is currently open in any BIBLE you are working with. There are so many times I am reading a passage - and I have NO commentaries open at the time - when suddenly, I want a commentary for THAT passage. Logos can do it [:)]

Also, there are times when I have wanted to open an interlinear from the similar resources option while using say, the ESV. The only resources that open up are all ENGLISH language resources. This is great for what it is, but it would be nice to also have a listing of interlinear bibles (and/or orig. lang. Bibles) that match the testament that is presently open in the English Bible.

Don't you know yet that you aren't supposed to open up an interlinear? Those are just in there to pad the collection account. [A]

As regards commentaries, is you already have your bible open to the passage you want to check, just open your library, pick a commentary (type in a name or a collection) then click on it. It will open to the passage.

Thanks. I know that what you answered is the way to do it now. I am thinking that the way Logos works right now - it could also give us this way of getting at our commentaries - all with a few less mouse clicks. Can cavemen DO mouse clicks ??

There is a tool that you can use to do what you want. It is the Cited By tool. In 4.0a this tool can now be persoanlized to give you only information you want as you read through a resource. Open a Bible, then the Cited By tool. By default it will follow whatever pane is your active pane (in this case you'd want that to be your Bible).

Using the customization options available through the large tab of the Cited By tool, you can limit what appears to a collection of Commentaries and Interlinears. Then whatever you read, you'll have a click-able list of commentary entries and your interlinears available nearby.

There is another way to accomplish this as well. If you create a custom Passage Guide and only include the commentary section, name the guide something memorable, then this will appear in your right click menu under the selection tab. Click on it and it will generate a list of commentaries for that passage. You can do something similar by including just the section called 'collections' and form a collection of your interlinears which you point that collection section to. Then name the guide something like 'Interlinears' and again it will appear the right click menu.

If you select the Reference tab on the right hand side, then your custom passage guide should appear on the left hand side. Mark, this works for commentaries, but it doesn't appear to work for interlinears. Does it work for you for interlinears? I don't think interlinears ever show up in a passage guide, because they are the biblical text, they don't mention biblical references.

Here's something that will work for interlinears and is much simpler.

Create a collection called, say, "Parallel Bibles," which includes all the English Bibles and Interlinears and original language Bibles you might ever want to look at as parallel resources.

Now when you're looking at a Bible, there's a "parallel resource sets" button (see red arrow below) which you can click on to drop down a list of all the parallel resources in the collection to which this current Bible belongs. (If there are more than one such collection, they will both/all show up side-by-side and you can choose from them). Now just choose the Interlinear you're interested in, and it will go to the current verse in that resource.

Wow, you can actually do even better than what I just said: create a collection called something like "Parallel Bibles & Commentaries" and include in it all the English Bibles, Interlinears, original language Bibles, and Commentaries you might like to ever consult as parallel resources. (View Mark Barnes's videos on making complex collections because you'll want to use collection nesting for this one!). Now you can do exactly wha tyou first asked for with a simple click of a button and select from a dropdown menu. Since all the commentaries are addressed by Scripture reference, they can function in the Parallel Resource Sets dropdown.

Mark, I do think this is pretty exactly the functionality Ron was asking for. Yes, he'd have to set up a collection to make it work for him. But how would Logos know what alternate books he'd want to show up in that drop-down? They could make a pretty good stab at it, but this way he'd have more fine-tuned control over it. I for one wouldn't want every single commentary or Interlinear that I have in my library to show up there -- it would be overwhelming.

Mark: The feature that you pictured above regarding the CITED BY tool; can it be set once and then that will be the default for all LAYOUTS, or will each LAYOUT need to be set independently?

In other words: I just went through my CITED BY in a "Simple Layout" I created. I unchecked different boxes and dragged others up on the list so I would have them in the order I want. My question is : do I have to do this for each layout?

I am sorry I wasn't around to answer your question earlier.

The Cited By tool remembers the last way you configured it unless you save it in a layout, then it will remember how it was set in that layout. So the answer is if you never change the layout you now have it should always open to that format whether you save it in a layout or not. If you want different formats for the Cited By tool, you need to save them as part of a layout.
