Logos 4 and startup...

I run a fair amount of stuff at the start of Windows (Vista) and although I don't mind a bit of a wait while things load, it's a weee bit much when Logos 4 tries to push everything aside to start indexing like the resource hogging madman that it is. Is it possible to put a delay in when loading up the computer?

For those of us who like to restart our computers fairly often, this would be nice please devs.

Once Logos has done indexing your purchased resources, it shouldn't need to keep indexing. It might take several hours, but it shouldn't still be going the next day. If you have only recently purchased Logos and it's still indexing, you can pause indexing to do some other work for a while by clicking on the blue Logos icon in your tray and choosing Pause indexing for 4 hours. You can resume at any time or pause it again if you need more time after the 4 hours are up.

Reindexing has been quite fast, but Logos has needed to do it after the last couple of updates. Regardless, new users shouldn't need to be subjected to instant startup indexing if they paused indexing before shutting down their computer.

The point was- if your computer is subjected to heavy loading upon startup, there's nothing worse (computer wise) than a program which decides on taking control during that time. That why I use Avast antivirus over AVG. You can tell Avast to wait for a while before updating. AVG just grinds the computer to a halt as it tries to update itself and its databases, regardless of Windows loading.

Hmm - I reckon that shows how seldom I restart my computer. I didn't realize that Logos4 would start indexing on start-up. I thought it would resume indexing the next time you ran it.

I have Logos 4 on my desktop which has a 2.53 ghz cpu and 2 gigs of ram. I have no other programs that load on startup with windows xp pro and not even an antivirus program. Logos 4 still loads extremely slow and I dont open with the home page cause it takes over two minutes to load even when there is no indexing going on. I also have Logos 4 on my laptop with windows 7 which has a dual core 2 ghz cpu with 4 gig of ram, plenty of hard drive space (on both computers) and once again, I dont open to the homepage because it loads extremely slow. It is even slow when loading period. I have no other programs to inhibit Logos 4 on startup and dont run an antivirus on the laptop either. Indexing is not the issue here, not sure why it is so slow. I have even given the Logos 4 a higher priority in the processing...so any suggestions? Logos 3 moves so much faster in locating files and moving pages around is quicker and easier for me. I really do love Logos 4, just seems that it is not meeting the fastness that it proclaims to be able to do...I know, I know PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE!!!

For comparison, you might want to see some of the stats on this link about startup time for L4: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/9087.aspx. Your laptop specs are better than mine (I have a 1.9 ghz w/ 2g ram). If I restart my computer, it takes about 45 seconds to completely load L4; if I have had L4 running and shut it down and restart it, it's only about 17 seconds. The link above also gives some suggestions for speed improvement.

I did check out that other page...I will try the internet off...of course it loads faster after I have opened/closed the program and then open it again...a delicate as I can put it...why should I do this or what is the point? I remember windows 3.1 and it tooks three minutes to load ms word and I could type faster than the cursor could keep up and my typing skills were not what they are now! On my laptop maybe the sidebar slows it down? I watch the cpu and ram usage while starting Logos 4 and the cpu usage on both cores are less than 5% I dont remember the ram usage at this time but it isnt very high either. I have a 512gb video card on both the desktop(nvidia) and the laptop(ati) and the laptop is 64 bit. I also have the sound turned off for those who time it with the sound...I have as little as possible going at startup...thanks for your input Gary...I am really thankful to have such wonderful Bible software. I am running the silver edition with many other rescources that I have purchased...have no idea how many resources I have and dont know how these other guys know. Just these old bones still have that "NEED FOR SPEED" feeling so that it seems like I am getting more acclomplished in less time!

I'm in and out of L4 during the day--I know some people keep it running all the time; I don't. After I have restarted my computer, the load time for L4 is much slower because it is also loading Microsoft's .Net environment. Once this is loaded, it doesn't need to be reloaded until the computer is rebooted.

Open your Library--with nothing typed in the search box you should see a number; that is the number of resources in your library. As you type a search string, this number changes to the number of resources which match the search. The image below shows that I have 1302 resources.

Under Tools \ Settings \ General just turn off "Automatically Download Updates." Then you can update whenever you have the time manually.

Sir Maru, if that's in reply to my original issue, turning off auto updates is somewhat missing the point. I like auto updating- I don't like programs that are written as if they were the only program to be run.
