TIP of the day: Converting Bible study technique to Logos Tool.

1. One of my favorite ways of identifying issues in the text worth exploring is "Questions of Parshanut" from Kolel: The Adult Centre of Liberal Jewish Learning http://www.kolel.org/torahstory/module3/page3.html However, it you try to use the link, you will find the site no longer exists. Tip number one: go to Wayback Machine http://archive.org/web/ and enter the dead link (URL):

Select a date:

It will provide the "extinct" web page:

2. Use the right click "save picture as" function to capture the icons for the study technique:

3. Under Tools ==> Library ==> Highlighting open the Highlighting tool, and open a new palette:

4. Give the Palette a name, then begin adding Styles, one for each question icon you have saved.

In this particular case, I prefer to have all my Questions of Parshanut in a single file so that I turn the highlighting on and off by the method. Others may have a different preference.

5. In the style note the "click to choose" section which will allow you to browse to where you stored the images from the web page.

The complete entry of for style:

My completed Palette:

6. Now when you run into an appropriate textual difficulty, you can:

  • highlight the text containing the problem
  • add the appropriate highlight i.e. the icon for the question
  • add any notes you wish to the highlight note - explaining why it is problematic and offering possible explanations

Note: this is a good example of when one wants to include notes on a highlight.

.The method also provides a good example of the use of multiple attachment points. Be careful to add by selection so that the icon will show on each verse (something I failed to do when I took this screen shot).

To add an attachment point click on the arrow head in circle icon on the note:

Select "Edit attachment points"

Applying this method gives you quick access to meaningful questions of Bible interpretation that are easily understood by those having no background in the area but still challenge the most experienced reader. Perfect in class when the conversation lulls.

===============================

WARNING:

  1. Logos insists on repeating the icon on each line. I believe this to be a bug as the other option overlays the text which is clearly not what I need. If it is not a bug an additional option is necessary
  2. It is worth you time to convert the archived web page into a Personal Book to insure that you retain the background information. Remember that copy & past images do not work in PB's. You'll need to insert the images that you saved for the palette

An example of a similar approach also easily converted to Logos for apologetic purposes of course:

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Duvall, J. Scott, and J. Daniel Hays. Grasping God’s Word: A Hands-on Approach to Reading, Interpreting, and Applying the Bible. Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2005. leads to:

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

I wonder if you could do BibleArcing using this method. I have my Bible set to Precepts Study Bible study method which is one of the highlighting forms in Logos.

It would be interesting to see other techniques and screenshots.

What I don't know for certain is if you have to have the images on your computer but I will try. I also have some collections that need to be shared and a few word list ....

I had no idea that such an website even existed. That is so cool.

And sharing those collections would be amazing. Thanks.
