In a recent forum discussion, it finally occurred to me that these operators are not limited to Bible reference but also apply elsewhere e.g. Bible senses. However, in this post I will deal specifically with Bible references and similar references. Bible sense lexicon references will be saved for a separate post.

1. For an exact match, use the equal sign. I am using John 3:16-17 for my Bible example and The Catechism of the Catholic Church 456-7 as my more generic example.

2. For the exact reference and any subsets of the reference, use the word "subset". Remember that a subset is wholly contained within the set.

3. For the exact reference and any supersets of the reference, use the word "superset". Remember that a superset wholly contains the given reference.

4.  The general default is an intersection that does not cross chapter/article boundaries. It's symbol is ~. Remember that an intersection contains some or all verses in the specified reference.

5. The final option is an intersection without the chapter/article restriction. It is specified by the word "intersect".

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."
