Merge Library

I would like to add Titles, Publishing info and book description of my hard copies (regular books) to my Logos Library. This way I can go to one place and see all of my available resources even the ones on my bookshelf. Does anyone have advice on how to enter these titles?

unfortunately, that isn't a feature of logos. The library is only a catalog of your ebooks in the logos system. I do have a tweak for you, but you will have to decide it's worth. You could create personal books for each of your hardcover copy books. You would use a blank word document, and then add the metadata that you're wanting to see.

You could use the free LibraryThing to enter your hard copy books. You can also export your Logos Library as an Excel spreadsheet and then you can edit the columns on that to meet the exact format requirements so that it can be imported into LibraryThing. This would only give you a fixed snapshot of your current library holdings, though. As you acquire more Logos books, you'd need to export/import into LibraryThing again. I don't know if it would cause there to be duplicates in your database, but you could mess around with it and see.

I have actually been desiring to do this as well but even one step further... Create a table of contents for each book with actual headings in Word so that when I do a heading search in Logos it will find these contents of my print books as well. It's a lot of work but the way things are going in this digital age, it's the only way I can see the value of keeping these dead trees around (that is until they all become digital resources of course).

I think you can only import to LibraryThing if you've got ISBN numbers in the file. I haven't found a way of exporting the library including ISBN numbers from Logos (although I might be missing something). I believe that ISBN numbers are stored in the database, so was planning to have a look at the SQLite files when I get a chance, to see if I could do it that way. For LibraryThing, if you try importing, it will look only for the ISBN numbers in the file, and ignore everything else, so I haven't worked out a way of getting my tags into it either, short of amending them all manually.

EDIT: The good news s that, once you've worked out how to do it, LibraryThing does eradicate duplicates, so a reimport will import only the new ones (as far as I can see from the documentation - I haven't tested it yet!)

Here's another trick I do "if" the book I have in print is also available in Logos format. I tag the Logos edition of the book with "Print". Then when running a mytag:print search in library, I can see all my Logos books I also have in print. Obviously this rules out printed books not in Logos, but it's still handy.

I'm transitioning as much of my print to Logos as possible. Makes life much easier on what I can get in Logos.

That's a good idea! If I weren't already so hopelessly behind on tagging that I've pretty much given up on ever catching up, I'd consider adopting this practice.

They're not stored in the database unfortunately, which is annoying because Logos does keep track of ISBNs in its metadata. But that part of the metadata is never stored in the SQLite files. Not having ISBNs is the only thing I miss from Libronix 3.

They do keep ISBN data? I never knew and didn't expect that. After all a large percentage of Logos' content predates the usage of ISBNs. And even if the printed books have ISBNs, the Logos edition might be special (errata fixed, no callout boxes, some indexes missing, different rendering of tables, sometimes graphics missing, some books split into a number of resources or merged...).

NB: It helps only for a small segment of our libraries, but the Logos resource IDs for Vyrso books resemble their ISBN.

About half of the Logos resources have a real ISBN. A fair number of those never had an ISBN, so I would estimate that about two-third of resources that 'should' have ISBNs have got them.
