Why can't I use my computer while it is indexing?

A few weeks ago a change was made to reduce the memory usage during indexing. For the first time in many years, this allowed me to use my computer (just a tiny bit slower than normal) during indexing (resolved] 6.3 B5 Indexer memory hog??).

Now I seem to be back to where I was before. During the long indexing, my computer is barely responsive, very slow, and frustrating to use if I have something I need to do.

Has the previous change reverted?

No, it was removed in a 6.3 RC and hasn't been reintroduced.

Any particular reason for removing it?

It made a huge difference to be able to open Logos without the fear that it will start indexing and make my computer almost unusable for a few hours. With resource updates now happening in the background without needing to restart, (to my mind) it makes sense that indexing should also be something that can happen in the background without impacting significantly on my use of Logos and other software.

I know I can cancel indexing. That in itself takes time if my computer has slowed to a crawl. For me it also tends to make indexing crash when I resume indexing.

Please bring back the change you made before.

Which change do you want brought back?

In reality, this just brought the final release of 6.3 back to the way it was in 6.2; the "more memory" change was tested in the beta and removed due to customer feedback.

So indexing shouldn't have change significantly since the launch of 6.0.

Looking at that thread, it seems that it was 6.3 RC2 that caused an improvement for a short time.

Since then it has reverted to the user experience that I have had for many years. (I hadn't noticed a particular change with 6.3 Beta 5.)

I'm now running 6.5 Beta 2. When Logos is indexing my computer, all software becomes extremely show, such that it is frustrating to even try to use the computer. The experience is like when I open my mother's computer after it hasn't been used for a month or two: McAfee is running a virus scan, Windows, Java and Adobe are all installing updates, and I can't do the one simple thing I wanted to do. This goes on until indexing has finished.

It makes me reluctant to open Logos unless I have allowed it time to install updates and index the night before.

I don't know if my experience is everyone's experience or not.

I'm not aware of any code that would have changed this.

I don't know if my experience is everyone's experience or not.

The Indexer can perform a lot of disk I/O, so a lot can depend on your disk performance.
