Two Questions...

Hi there,

First question: I currently have Logos 3, but I am switching from my PC to a Macbook pro. What do I need to do in order to make this work? I am really hoping that I don't have to buy the software again but can just exchange the license and make whatever necessary changes. I'm still fairly new to Logos and completely new to Macs so I would appreciate some straightforward, easy-to-follow advice.

Second: In the occasion that I do not need to buy new softward and can continue using my Logos 3... I'm just curious, is the difference between Logos 3 and 4 that great? Is it worth upgrading? To be honest, I've found Logos in generral somewhat cumbersome and not as helpful as I was hoping it would be for the money. I have the scholars gold edition; I feel like it should be more helpful than it is. Is Logos 4 a great improvement? And particularly as it pertains to Macs?

As it stands L4 for mac is still in Alpha, so it is obviously not ready. Using the Windows version via parallels, I find it a little bulky and in need of code streamlining. With that said, It is well worth the purchase IMO...

Compared to Logo 3 it is night and day.

Understand L4 is not just an upgrade to an existing app, it is a complete rewrite so though it is listed as L4 it is V1 software So there will be some kinks to work out. However in my study with it over the past few days, I am blown away at how productive I have become. I tried accordance but it doesn’t come close to what L4 is promising and delivering. The good is if you need all the features you can run the Windows version on your new Mac.

The only MAJOR issue I find is the indexing on MAC is Much longer than the windows version. I had my Quad core doing a mac and Windows instal simultaneously. Using 2 cores each (which seems to be the mac version limit) The windows version was able to max out the CPU's

The windows version finished in 1/3 the time it took the mac version to index. So obviously the windows version is "there" but understand this was running the windows version under Parallels 5.

But these are just my observations and opinions

I just switched from PC to mac and I didn't have to pay for anything again, but I had already upgraded to L4 and the download for mac is on my order history with the download for Win.

While I had 3.0, I upgraded from they bible study library to the gold scholar's. They (customer service) asked me if I wanted the mac disk while I was on the phone with them and were gracious enough to send it to me at no charge.

If you don't have the mac 3.0 disk you can probably call and ask for it. If you want to upgrade to L4, it's downloaded over the internet.

I personally really like L4, even though it's not finished yet.

Currently, the Mac version does limit indexing to 2 cores. We've internally tried using more (our dev's have 8 core machines), but it actually results in slower indexing times. We hope to speed indexing up as we get closer to final release. On the positive side, indexing should be a very infrequent occurrence once you have gotten over the initial hurdle. And the positives of having a full text index on the machine for every book in your library FAR outweigh the drawbacks to spending some indexing time.

I greatly prefer v4 to either v3 on Windows or v1.2.2 on Mac. I'm biased, but even before I worked for the company, once I got a sneak peek at v4, I didn't want to have to go back to 3.

I am biased too. I like pretty products that make Snow Leopard look good. and L4 does that. LOL. Now that I am over the index hurdle, I am cruising along. I have only had one system lockup under A11, so that’s decent... Check the logs and it is some kind of L4 Hang...But hasn’t repeated itself. hadn't tried it under 64bit currently just running 32bit. Too many issues with Safari and the QuickTime Toolkit kernel panicking...

Have you tried optimizing Parallels 5 for L4? See the link to a thread on tis subject in my signature. I have never used a dedicated Windows machine, so I can't compare, but I get satisfactory response using L4 under Parallels 5 with XP Pro.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Macdom. The original Mac version of Logos is not v3; it is 1.2.2. This version has been adequate for some on this forum, but it does not have all the features of L4 Win. It was released while Logos was nearing release of L4 Windows. The logical upgrade path then became L4 Mac, so Logos has not wasted resources with further development of a version that has already been superseded. L4 Mac is still in the Alpha testing stage of development. It is not yet ready for serious Bible study, but is available for testing.

However, the same license covers both Mac and Windows platforms. You can use the Windows version while testing the Mac version. Since L4 automatically synchronizes across multiple computers, any work done on the Windows version will also appear in the Mac version. You will not lose any work.

L4 Windows is light-years ahead of L3. I purchased L4 in the first week after release. Since then, I have opened L3 twice, both times to check something that was said on the forums, and I was a semi-proficient power user of L3. Take the plunge; you will like it.

Logos 4 only runs as a 32-bit app. One of the key libraries we use doesn't yet support 64-bit.

What does the Logos staff mean when they say "one of the libraries" or "one of the key libraries?" Does that mean a certain book or book collection? If the libraries were to start supporting 64 bit, does Logos plan to do code to be a 64 bit app since they try to stay on the "cutting edge of technology?"

Library in the sense of "A collection of programing code routines" not in the sense of a collection of books. Specifically, the Mono framework (open-source, non-Windows implementation of the .NET Framework and Runtime) only supports 32-bit execution on Mac. A 64-bit version on Mono is in the works, but not completed yet.

LOL. I have optimized P5. And though it runs satisfactory, the responsiveness I have come to enjoy being in SL wasn’t there.

However I find P5 to be WAY more responsive under XP in general. Less OS Bloat. I have been using Parallels since they released in '06

I have to agree that there is little, if any, point in maintaining V3 and no point at all in going to 1.2.2 on the MAC. It appears that for now, if you are doing serious work use XP Pro (or your favorite flavor of Windows) under parallels. I use Parallels 3 on my MBP (old cor duo processor) and Parallels 5 on my iMac (i7 quad core). Both work fine, but one (guess which) is faster. I have it installed on a netbook (ASUS 1000HA) where it is a fine e-reader but useless for searching or study.

I have downloaded the L4 MAC alpha and check for crashes but don't really use it much. It still lacks functionality. I do look forward to not needing Parallels on the MBP, it cuts battery life in half.
