Can we get the ESV Global Study Bible free in Logos?

I noticed today that Crossway now gives away the eBooks for their ESV Global Study Bible. You can download the ePub or mobi files here:

Can we get this converted to Logos? This would be a nice free resource to offer to make the initial entry point for people into the Logos ecosystem easier.

Probably not in LOGOS; maybe in Vyrso, but not likely.

The relevant page says "The Global Study Bible’s notes and maps were adapted from the best-selling ESV Study Bible and contain a wealth of information about the biblical text, history, and geography. With overviews of each Bible book, special facts, and character profiles, the Global Study Bible is an outstanding resource for Christians everywhere who seek to know and understand the truth of the Bible and its global meaning."

I believe that means it is the boiled down essence of the ESVSB. So if you have the larger you probably gain nothing by having the smaller.

On the page linked above there is a preview of Genesis, and by comparing it with the larger version I can tell you the introduction material is shorter and includes a relatively new block on "the global message of genesis". I did not compare that section with the rest of the ESVSB's introductory material but my hunch is that it is a mixture of new and "old".

The notes are indeed abbreviated, but only slightly, the global sb is still a powerhouse of notes by the looks of the first three chapters of Genesis.

Here is an excerpt from Genesis 1:1. The ESVSB in Logos, and the ESVGSB in Kindle.

ESVSB in Logos

1:1 In the beginning. This opening verse can be taken as a summary, introducing the whole passage; or it can be read as the first event, the origin of the heavens and the earth (sometime before the first day), including the creation of matter, space, and time. This second view (the origin of the heavens and the earth) is confirmed by the NT writers’ affirmation that creation was from nothing (Heb. 11:3; Rev. 4:11). God created. Although the Hebrew word for “God,” ’Elohim, is plural in form (possibly to express majesty), the verb “create” is singular, indicating that God is thought of as one being. Genesis is consistently monotheistic in its outlook, in marked contrast to other ancient Near Eastern accounts of creation. There is only one God. The Hebrew verb bara’, “create,” is always used in the OT with God as the subject; while it is not always used to describe creation out of nothing, it does stress God’s sovereignty and power. Heavens and the earth here means “everything.” This means, then, that “In the beginning” refers to the beginning of everything. The text indicates that God created everything in the universe, which thus affirms that he did in fact create it ex nihilo (Latin “out of nothing”). The effect of the opening words of the Bible is to establish that God, in his inscrutable wisdom, sovereign power, and majesty, is the Creator of all things that exist.

1:1 God’s act of creation is the foundation for the entire biblical history. A considerable number of passages refer back to creation (e.g., Psalms 8; 104; 148; John 1:1–3; 1 Cor. 8:6; Col. 1:15–17; Heb. 1:2; 11:3; 1 John 1:5–7). All the rest of the Bible depends indirectly on it.

GENESIS— NOTE ON 1: 1– 11: 26 Primeval History. Genesis 1– 11 surveys the history of the world before Abraham, while chs. 12– 50 focus on one main family. There are no real parallels to chs. 12– 50 in the literature of other ancient civilizations. However, other ancient stories do exist about both creation and the flood. These stories stand in sharp contrast to the biblical account. Generally they depict creation as a great struggle, often involving conflict between the gods. For example, they claim that the flood was sent because the gods could not stand the noise made by human beings but were unable to control it in any other way. Genesis disproves such stories by its teachings. There is only one God, whose word is almighty. He spoke the world into being. The sun and moon are not gods in their own right but are created by the one God. It is human sin that prompts the flood. These principles in Genesis 1– 11 run through the rest of Scripture.

FACT In the Hebrew Bible, the title of Genesis is In the Beginning, the book’s first words. The English title is related to the Greek word genesis, which means “beginning.”

1: 1– 2: 3 God’s Creation and Ordering of Heaven and Earth. The book of Genesis opens with a majestic description of how God created the heavens and earth and then put everything in order so that it might become his dwelling place. God assigns humanity to govern the other creatures on his behalf, so that the whole earth should become the temple of God, the place of his presence, displaying his glory.

I don't know if there is DRM in there but if it is free I would doubt it. You could've use Calibre to convert the epub/mobi to a docx and then import into logos as a personal book.

Some of us have posted about it before. Logos should offer it for free. I understand that there is a production cost, so to cover that, Logos can put it in Community Pricing, and many of us will gladly cover those costs so future users can have it for free.

Didn't hear a peep from Logos/Faithlife about the product way back when it was introduced and offered at no cost by Crossway.

What would be the benefit of having this, if one already has the ESVSB? I would bid a few dollars to help produce a free version, but I don't see any advantage or benefit in having it if you already have the ESVSB. They all appear to be published by Crossway.

Yeah, I'm actually in the process of trying to do it. It is kinda confusing how to since Calibre unfortunately doesn't support converting a file to docx. I found these instructions saying to convert to htmlz, extract, and then open in word. Is that how you do it? I'm trying that now. We'll see if it works. It would be nice to have it as a legit Logos resource as right now, Logos has failed to make the personal books feature work on mobile devices which has been super frustrating.

I have already bought the ESV Study Bible in Kindle, but I'd really like to have it in Logos without paying another $50 for it! Esp. since you can get it for only $16 on Kindle and not to mention you can even get a print version for less than half of what the Logos version costs! This seems very ridiculous to me especially now that they have this free "global" version that seems to be very similar.

So far I haven't had any luck converting this to a Word Doc for Logos Personal books at all! I tried converting to htmlz as per the instructions I linked to above, and then Word asked me for permission to access all 275 images in the book one by one! Before I could finish, Word crashed. I tried converting as an RTF in Calibre, and then when I try to open that file, Word stops responding. Grrrr, can anyone else please try? Or teach me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

I have a docx version of the GSB that loads into MS Word without error - however when I try to convert it to a PBB using LOGOS, LOGOS crashes - with a window telling me I can debug LOGOS. I am not an PBB expert or a log file expert if that would help. Any one want to take a look?

I have just converted the file to docx, but something may be wrong. When opening in MS-Word, the page count is 9,537 pages.

I had an issue uploading the 54MB docx file here, so I will try to upload to the special files forum (no guarantee). What I did was I downloaded the ESVGSB in mobi format, converted file in Calibre to docx, opened in MS-Word and created a PBB with no issues, although it did take some time to compile The concern that I have is the over 9K page count when the paperback on Amazon is listed at only 1,984.

My configuration is:

Calibre 2.28 (64bit)
MS-Word 2010
Logos 6.7 Beta 1
Microsoft Windows 7 64bit
8GB RAM

Erwin, the eBook versions place the footnotes and cross references on separate pages at the end of each Bible book. They are linked to by the original text and link back to the original text, but add to the page count. Also, these added pages are displayed in the default font, making them larger than the paper versions of this Bible. This could be what you are seeing.
